Re: Northwestern Wildcats (NCAA 13)

NU on the board for 2013
Wildcats stay local for 2013's first commitment

October 1, 2012

Northwestern faces a tremendous challenge this weekend in Happy Valley against Penn State, but off the field, defensive coordinator/head recruiter Brian Kudron's efforts have finally paid off, as the Wildcats scored their first commitment in the 2013 class in the wake of the 70-35 win over Indiana on Saturday.

Massive offensive lineman Stephen Long of Joliet Catholic in the Chicagoland suburb of Joliet has broken the ice on Northwestern's recruiting efforts, committing to the Wildcats after his official visit. Though rated only a two-star prospect, he fits the mold of what Northwestern is looking for in offensive linemen going forward. At 6'6, 324 pounds, Long is a huge and powerful blocker who could play guard or right tackle in college.

For Long, it was all about academics.

"I've wanted to go to Northwestern for the longest time," he said. "They're an elite academic institution, and have everything I'm looking for in a school. I was about 90% sure of my choice headed into last Saturday, and my visit for the game sealed the deal."

Game Notes
Penn State is off to a rough start under Bill O'Brien, sputtering to a 3-2 record and ranking last in the Big Ten in both offense and defense early in the season. With that said, Happy Valley is always a treacherous place, and Northwestern will have to bring their A game to emerge with a victory.

Senior QB Matt McGloin is completing only 54% of his passes for the Nittany Lions, but he does have 10 touchdowns to only four interceptions. Penn State's offense was hurt by the loss of Silas Redd and Justin Brown; in their place, Derek Day leads PSU in rushing with 305 yards (5.1 YPC) and three TDs, followed by Bill Belton's 180 yards (4.3 YPC). Sophomore wideout Allen Robinson is emerging as a star receiver with 25 receptions for 328 yards (13.1 YPC) and four touchdowns, but PSU's #2 wideout Alex Kenney (23-288-2) will miss the game with a broken tailbone. In his place is speedy junior Shawney Kersey (11 receptions, 200 yards, 3 TDs).

Defensively Penn State still has talent, despite their mediocre defensive rankings and the 37-24 thumping they took in Champaign against Illinois a week ago. Linebacker U's trio of Glenn Carson, Michael Mauti, and Gerald Hodges are as solid a unit as anywhere in the conference, and will be a major test for Northwestern's running game, along with seniors Sean Stanley and Jordan Hill up front. PSU has struggled to establish any sort of a pass rush, and they have only two interceptions through five games, which could mean a heavy dose of Trevor Siemian at QB for the Wildcats.

NU leaves Happy Valley happy
Gutsy 4th down call clinches a clutch win on the road

STATE COLLEGE, PA - For Pat Fitzgerald, there was never any decision to be made. He was going for it, without a doubt.

With 100 seconds to go in the fourth quarter and the clock stopped after Penn State used its final timeout, Northwestern faced a 4th and 1 at their own 40 yard line. They could choose to punt the ball away and rely on a defense that had just given up a 90-yard touchdown drive moments earlier, or they could rely on the Big Ten's best rushing offense to pick up one yard and win the game.

The decision was easy, and the playcall was easier. A zone read play - Kain Colter's specialty. Colter trapped PSU defensive end Sean Stanley in no man's land, and in that moment of indecision, Colter tucked the ball into Treyvon Green's belly, and Green dove forward for three yards, and delivered a 24-17 victory to the Cardiac Cats - their first win in Happy Valley since 2004.

"What a huge victory this is for our kids," a rain-soaked Fitzgerald said on the field after the game. "This is one of the hardest places to play in all of college football, and the rain just made it all the more challenging, and our kids were up to that challenge. This is a great step forward for our program."

In a stark contrast to last week's track meet with Indiana, the Wildcats' offense slushed through the rain and a stingy Penn State defense, and the team had to lean on Brian Kudron's defense for much of the day. Despite giving up the late touchdown to make things interesting, NU's young defensive whiz had high praise for his defenders.

"We really challenged these guys to bounce back after last week," he said. "And they did, in every form. This is one of the conference's power programs, so for us to come in here and grind out a victory like this means a lot. It's a testament to the work ethic of our players and how hard they're willing to fight to win in this conference."

Re: Northwestern Wildcats (NCAA 13)

#2 on the board for NU
Another local lineman stays home, picks Northwestern

October 8, 2012

At the core of Brian Kudron's Five State Plan for Northwestern's recruiting is the home state of Illinois; he believes it is absolutely critical that Northwestern lands every single in-state player they want.

Today they made it 2-for-2 in the 2013 class in that regard, beating out rival Illinois for local offensive lineman Will Jackson. And when we say local, we mean local, as Jackson resides in Skokie, Illinois and plays for Evanston Township High School, both of which are quite literally in the shadow of Northwestern's campus. Growing up in such close proximity to NU, Jackson, like fellow 2013 commitment Stephen Long, was always enamored with the academic side of the university in addition to the athletics, and although the Illini made it an interesting race, they were unable to overcome Northwestern's academic-based pitch.

"Illinois was very impressive," the 6'6, 296-pound Jackson said. "They really put their best foot forward and recruited me hard. It was hard for me to make the call to Coach Beckman and tell him of my decision, but he respected it, and I'm happy to be on board with Northwestern."

It wasn't all good news on the recruiting front for the Cats, though. Ironically, despite beating Penn State in Happy Valley on the football field, this weekend proved decisive for 4* Aliquippa (PA) linebacker Glenn Clark, who chose the Nittany Lions over the Wildcats.

Game Notes
The Gophers have been an enigma, losing to an FCS team and then getting humiliated by Western Michigan, both at home, only to come back last week and win a gutsy game in Iowa City against the Hawkeyes. Senior MarQueis Gray is a horse for Minnesota at 6'4, 250 pounds, and his 354 rushing yards are just behind Donnell Kirkwood's 383 for the team lead. As a passer though, Gray is completing only 46% of his passes, and outside of Malcolm Moulton (27 receptions, 326 yards), the Gophers do not have any consistent threats at receiver. With left tackle Ed Olson out, the Wildcats will likely stack the box and apply pressure, hoping to force Gray to throw and make mistakes.

Defensively, Minnesota is entirely mediocre, and looks a lot like the Indiana team that Northwestern set ablaze two weeks ago in Evanston. Linebackers Aaron Hill and Mike Rallis lead the Gophers' D, with Hill leading the team in tackles (33) and Rallis leading in sacks (four). Senior corner Michael Carter has three of Minnesota's eight interceptions on the season.

A Game of Inches
Northwestern barely escapes Minneapolis with their perfect record intact

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - Northwestern went into Minnesota expecting to run right through the Gophers. Instead they found themselves bogged down in a dogfight with a tougher than expected opponent, and even trailed in the fourth quarter for the first time all season.

In the end, instant replay saved the Wildcats, as a fourth down conversion by Minnesota that would've put them close to field goal range with 1:30 left in the game was overturned when it showed that Minnesota receiver Marcus Jones just missed getting his foot inbounds on the catch. This allowed Northwestern to escape with a 22-20 nailbiter that had most on their side shaking their heads.

"We got lucky today," Pat Fitzgerald said. "I don't think we took this opponent as seriously as we should have, and that's not acceptable, especially on the road. They're a good football team, and we came in here today expecting them to roll over. That can't happen. We have to be better than that, and the adversity we're facing going forward is only going to add to the demand that we focus better."

The adversity that Fitzgerald mentioned was the loss of star running back Venric Mark in the fourth quarter. Mark had a great day, running for 143 yards, but he lost a fumble, had another lost fumble overturned by review, and left the game injured twice. He returned after the first one, but the second time seemed much more substantial, and although Northwestern is often tight-lipped about injury information, Fitzgerald did say that Mark is likely to miss playing time.

Defensively, Brian Kudron pulled no punches in his appraisal of his secondary, which allowed a stunning 238 yards passing to MarQueis Gray despite only eight completions. It reached a point in the second half where Northwestern pulled cornerback Daniel Jones off the field and replaced him with Demetrius Dugar.

"That's a terrible performance," NU's defensive coordinator said. "To give up that many yards on only eight completions is awful, no matter how you slice it. We gave up two huge touchdown passes because we just let guys run past us. The second one was a blown coverage, we were in cover three, and only two guys dropped into their zones. That's a fundamental breakdown in the most basic of coverages, and that just can't be the case. We keep giving up these big plays, it's only a matter of time before they start costing us games."
