Re: Northwestern Wildcats (NCAA 13)

I just started a Johnny Manziel / Texas A&M Dynasty story line here in the forums and I decided that what I'd do for OSU/Penn State is this...

A) They will not be in the top 25. I'll replace them with the top "others getting votes" in the correct order. IE: If OSU is 15th, the 16th team takes their place and all others move up one spot on my posted Top 25.

B) If OSU or Penn State makes a Bowl Game or the National Championship, I will of course sim it, and render the opposing team winners by forfeit.

I don't know if this seems silly or pointless to others, but I like it for the realism effect. Shouldn't affect me too much as I play in the SEC anyhow. We'll see!

Re: Northwestern Wildcats (NCAA 13)

Atmosphere and academics are it for Ashley
Northwestern keeps the nation's #4 DE at home

October 22, 2012

EVANSTON, IL - The Northwestern coaches were just starting to come down from their high following the 20-13 come from behind win over Nebraska, when they got the call.

The #1 defensive player on their board had some good news.

Chicago Simeon defensive end Tristan Ashley marks the first breakthrough commitment for NU defensive coordinator/recruiting boss Brian Kudron. Normally a player of Ashley's caliber would easily slip through the Wildcats' grasp, but Kudron's dedication to sealing up the Land of Lincoln and his relentless sales pitch of Northwestern's elite academics made it impossible for the #4 defensive end recruit in the country to say no.

"Coach K would've put me in a headlock or something if I went elsewhere," Ashley said with a laugh. "I knew he was an intense guy just from talking to him, but seeing him coaching on the sidelines against Nebraska, seeing how he got after his players, and how his players responded to him on the field, it was awesome to see. They lay it all on the line for him."

At 6'4, 242 pounds, Ashley will specialize in getting after the quarterback when he arrives in Evanston, as Kudron recruited him as the defensive end/rush linebacker "Predator" position in the hybrid defense that will likely debut next season.

Ashley may have been the headline visitor for the Nebraska game, but he wasn't the only one. Among the visitors included NU's #1 offensive target, 4* QB Jeremy Cooper of Huber Heights (OH) Wayne, and Glen Ellyn (IL) Glenbard West defensive end/linebacker Doug Green. Ashley spoke to both prospects and shared his thoughts on where he thinks they stand.

"I think they both love Northwestern," he said. "Talking to them, and knowing Doug because we're both Chicagoland guys, I know they're really smart guys, and there's obviously a mutual attraction between guys like that and a place like Northwestern. I'm gonna do my part to try to get them here...Doug especially, because I can make the drive to his house if I need to, haha."

Game Notes
Like last week, Northwestern's opponent sports a mediocre record but the stats indicate a stingy foe more than capable of catching the Wildcats off guard. The Iowa Hawkeyes sport the nation's #3 defense in terms of total yards given up. The fact that they've fallen flat on their faces and started 0-3 in Big Ten play is mystifying until you see their offense is borderline comatose at times. Senior QB James Vandenburg is having a mediocre season at best, completing under 50% and throwing seven interceptions to only 12 touchdowns. He's at his best when he's turning around and handing it to 225-pound sophomore Mark Weisman, although the offense is so anemic that Weisman, the team's leading rusher with 547 yards and 5.6 YPC, has no touchdowns on the season. Freshman backup Greg Garmon has scored four times. When the Hawkeyes throw it, they'll look for big play wideout Keenan Davis, who has an eye-popping 18.8 yards per catch (33 receptions, 621 yards) and tight end CJ Fiedorowicz, who nearly matches it at 17.4 (23 for 402). Davis leads the team with seven touchdown catches, followed by Kevonte Martin-Manley's five.

When Northwestern takes the field, they will be facing a fearsome, overwhelmingly physical Hawkeye defense that gives no ground. Linebackers Christian Kirksey and James Morris are tackling machines with 48 and 45, respectively. Morris also has three sacks, and Kirksey has 2.5. Defensive ends Dominic Alvis and Joe Gaglione are big 265-pounders with surprising burst, leading the team in sacks with 5.5 and 4.5, respectively. Northwestern would be well-served to avoid throwing in the vicinity of Micah Hyde, who might be the Big Ten's best corner; he leads the Hawkeyes with four interceptions.

When I do a replay and try to take snapshots for uploading, the graphics look horrible. Helmet logo's are blurry, etc. Is it the same for you until you upload them or something? I know i'm playing the game in 1080p so I don't know what the hell is going on lol.

Edit: Just realized you have to use the focal tool... Looking forward to your results against Iowa! Lots of close games going your way, keep it up!

Iowa @ #16 Northwestern
Ryan Field
Evanston, IL
October 27, 2012

The Dream Dies Hard for NU
Fitzgerald's gamble backfires in brutal 10-9 loss to Iowa

EVANSTON, IL - With a battle-weary sigh, Pat Fitzgerald sat down to face the music following the most controversial call of his coaching career. In a defensive slugfest reminiscent of old school, conventional Big Ten football, the Northwestern coach opted for an unconventional ending - and it cost his team its perfect season.

Despite thoroughly crushing Iowa's offense and keeping them out of the endzone, Northwestern found themselves trailing 10-3 late in the fourth quarter before Trevor Siemian finally put a drive together, including a clutch 4th down conversion. Then, with 13 seconds left, Siemian threw a ball up for grabs that Demetrius Fields climbed the ladder to pull down for a circus catch in the endzone that sent Ryan Field into a frenzy.

And Fitzgerald opted to leave his offense on the field.

Forgoing a looming overtime against an Iowa offense that accomplished nothing all day, Fitzgerald rolled the dice and went for the win. And it was wide open too, as Kyle Prater broke wide open along the goalline on an out route. But Iowa defensive end Joe Gaglione shook off Patrick Ward's block and got both arms into the air, deflecting Siemian's pass at the line, helping the Hawkeyes pull off a heartbreaking 10-9 stunner. It was the second surreal play made by an Iowa DE on the day, as in the third quarter Dominic Alvis registered the first interception of a Northwestern QB on the season, picking Kain Colter off in the flat on a wideout screen and running to the endzone from 33 yards out.

"Our kids are heartbroken," a stoic Fitzgerald said after the game. "I let them down. I know hindsight is 20/20, but I probably should've kicked it. Our kids played their hearts out, left it all on the field, on both sides of the ball, against a really tough, gritty Iowa team, and I sabotaged our chances to win with my call at the end. And I'll accept the heat for that. That's part of my job. It's my job to shoulder responsibility when things don't go the way we want them to, and I'll accept that. I thought we had the momentum after the last drive and the touchdown, and I saw an opportunity to catch them off guard and get the win right there, and it backfired. I never make coaching decisions I think our kids can't back up. When it goes wrong, it's on me. Don't criticize these players for my mistake. These guys played their hearts out today. So if you're going to go after somebody for this loss, the buck stops with me."

Great dynasty so far. Sucks you lost a close game to ruin your perfect record though.
