Re: The Orange Crush: A Denver Broncos Dynasty

OUT WITH THE YOUNG; IN WITH THE OLD
VETERAN PEYTON MANNING LOOKS TO LEAD THE 2012 BRONCOS BACK TO THE PLAYOFFS

DENVER, CO (AP)
- 2011 was an interesting year for the Denver Broncos, a year in which we saw the emergence of a bright start in Von Miller, the collapse of Kyle Orton and a worshiping of Tim Tebow. 2012 will be a different beast for the Denver Broncos as only one of those three players still remain and that is Von Miller who will be looking to build upon an incredible 2011 rookie season. Kyle Orton is now yesterdays news, and Tim Tebow was traded for a bag of chips from the New York Jets. The big news that has everyone talking in Denver, and Colorado for that matter is that Peyton Manning chose the Broncos to be the team where he would finish his career. All off season we heard of Miami, and even the New York Jets but when it boiled down to it Denver was the place to be and John Fox couldn't be happier.

Draft wise Denver did a few moves that left some fans scratching their heads wondering what they were witnessing. Trading out of the first round entirely certainly got some fans over excited, though New England fans had been used to that for years. When Denver finally got on the clock they shocked many experts and fans alike when they took Derek Wolfe, when Stephen Hill was still on the board; someone many Denver fans hoped would be drafted to give Manning another big outside threat. Draft day was a weird day for most but with the Preseason now here it will be time to see if some of the risks and gambles the Broncos took will actually pay off this season. If not, then it could be John Fox who will be paying the price though there is every reason to be optimistic about this team moving forward into the season.

Game Notes
The first game for Denver after being humiliated in there final playoff game last season against the New England Patriots. The game just so happens to be against the team Denver shocked in the Wild Card round beating the Steelers in overtime to bounce them out of the playoffs. The good news for Denver is now they are being led by a Superbowl Champion in Peyton Manning who will have the offense clicking and firing the ball down the field. The preseason was rough for Denver however as they finished ranked 29th in offense.

The good news is their defense finished ranked 4th in defense and is going against the 28th ranked offense from the preseason. Von Miller will be tasked with leading the defense more so this year as Denver looks for him to slowly step into a captain roll for the eventual retirement of Champ Bailey. Big Ben will have to have his head on a swivel as he is going to be going against one of the best pass rushes in the game, maybe the best outside of the Houston Texans and San Francisco 49ers.

WEEK ONE RESULTS

....

PITTSBURGH STEELERS (0-0)
VS
DENVER BRONCOS (0-0)

BRONCOS ROLL TO EARLY SEASON WIN
STEELERS COME UP SHORT WITH A LATE COMEBACK ATTEMPT

DENVER, CO (AP) - Sunday night was a great evening for Denver Broncos fans and fans of football in general. We all saw the return of Peyton Manning who looked as though he didn't miss a beat in his nearly two years away from the game as he had the Denver offense humming. When the game started many didn't anticipate a quick start for Manning and the Denver offense but that is exactly what they ended up getting after a quick Steelers opening drive that saw them go three and out. Thomas would be the lucky recipient of the Manning touchdown pass to give the Broncos a quick 7-0 lead over a favored Pittsburgh team. Unfortunately for the Broncos offense that's where the big points would end as the rest of the first half would see three Prater field goals. Pittsburgh behind Big Ben however started to get a little bit of a flow going adding a late field goal in the first quarter, and then getting a Mendenhall 4 yard scamper to tie the game early on in the second quarter.

Pittsburgh has a quarter to forget however in the third and Denver and Peyton Manning to the game over and started to pound the ball on the ground and make long completions through the air when they needed it. On the opening drive of the second half it only took Denver three and a half minutes to be able to drive down the field and for Peyton Manning to find Caldwell over the middle for a quick 16 yard touchdown pass to break the will of the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Denver defense was able to hold strong behind the work of their linebackers, especially Von Miller who started his season off strong with a sack and five tackles. Manning and the Broncos were able to drive down once more in the third on a quick swing pass to Lance Ball to cap off the scoring for the Broncos and extending the lead to 21. Pittsburgh would go on to score 2 touchdowns late in the game to make it closer but it was a little to late as McGahee was able to run out the clock in the dying moments to secure the win for Denver.

NFL DRAFT 2012/2013 PLAYER SPOTLIGHT
GREGORIO MUCCI RISING UP DRAFT BOARDS AROUND THE LEAGUE

GREGORIO MUCCI (WR, UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA) - Coming from Italy, Gregorio made the choice not many European players do, and that was to pursue a professional sports career in the NFL. When interviewed about his decision Gregorio said how his family was disappointed that he was moving away from his home country to pursue a game that he truly loved. Very few colleges were interested in the unknown wide receiver but after trying out in a walk on at North Carolina he was quickly signed and the rest as they say is history. After a freshman year where he only caught a few passes Mucci quickly gained favor with his teammates and coaches as in his sophomore year he caught 53 balls for 762 yards with 5 touchdowns. Entering his junior year Muuci has high expectations for himself and as of right now he is sitting at a projected 2nd round pick something he is hoping to improve.

Game Notes
Atlanta will continue its test against AFC West opponents with Denver coming to play in the dome. Week one saw Atlanta barely get by a weak Kansas City team, the Matt Ryan and company knows they have to play a lot better with the Peyton Manning led Broncos coming into town. If Atlanta hopes to win the game they will need their defense to step up and make some big plays early in the game to slow the Denver offense that looked impressive in their week one win.

Manning returned to the field after a nearly two year absence and he looked like he never left, but that was at home with the fans on his side. This week in Atlanta who has a great home crowd will challenge Peyton and see if he can still make his adjustments at the line with his new teammates. Von Miller and the defense should continue to abuse the running game of opponents and we should see Michael Turner held in check much like Mendenhall was last week. We should expect a low scoring game with both defenses playing extremely well and showing that they can make the big plays when they are needed.

WEEK TWO RESULTS

....

DENVER BRONCOS (1-0)
VS
ATLANTA FALCONS (1-0)

MANNING MELTDOWN
MANNING THROWS 4 PICKS; JOHN FOX LIVID WITH FALCONS PLAY CALLING

DENVER, CO (AP) - It was anything but a warm welcome back to Atlanta for Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos, and surely a game Peyton will want to quickly forget. The statement was made early and would go on to set the tone for the rest of the game when Manning was sacked, fumbling the ball and Robinson being at the right place at the right time scooped it up and returned it for the early touchdown. And the Denver offense would not recover for most of the first quarter as they struggled to move the ball and when they were finally able to it would end abruptly with a dropped third down pass or a Peyton Manning turnover. Atlanta, thankfully for the Broncos was suffering from the same issue with ball movement and the Denver defense was able to hold them to only the defensive score in the first quarter.

Unfortunately things didn't really improve for the Broncos much in the second quarter and Manning continued to struggle throwing two of his four interceptions in the quarter. Both were drive killers as the Broncos were at midfield or just inside of Atlanta territory for both of the picks. Finally towards the end of the first half the Broncos were able to drive the football but had to ultimately settle for two field goals by Prater; unfortunately Atlanta would be able to add on a field goal of their own with only 16 seconds left. On the following kick off though Atlanta chose for a squib kick, something they would regret as it was returned to midfield and Denver having two timeouts left were able to get into field goal range to make it a one point game going into the half.

"I don't really know what to say, I have to play better and that is really all there is to it. My receivers didn't let me down, they ran the right routes and made the right adjustments; I just couldn't get the ball to them and Atlanta made some really good plays. This won't happen again and I can promise each and every Denver fan exactly that. As for the Atlanta play calling at the end of the game, I thought it was pretty bad what they did but we won't forget it." - Peyton Manning, Quarterback, Denver Broncos.

The third quarter would see Atlanta start to pull away with a Matt Bryant field goal and a Roddy White touchdown that should have never happened. On a third and 10 the Broncos defense allowed Matt Ryan to complete a 5 yard pass and Tony Gonzalez was able to convert the rest for the first down thanks in part to bad tackling by Tracy Porter. Manning and the offense continued to struggle to really get anything going but some signs of life started to appear and only down by 11 points the game was still very much within the grasps of the Broncos going into the fourth quarter.

Manning had the Broncos driving but the ugly interception monster once again reared its head and this time Asante Samuel was the lucky recipient of the ball and ran it all the way back for a 50 yard back breaking touchdown. Peyton was able to answer back on the very next drive with a 5 yard touchdown pass to Brandon Stokley, but it was far to little and much to late for the Broncos. Atlanta tacked on another field goal before scoring a touchdown that infuriated Denver coach John Fox, who after the game could be seen yelling at Mike Smith about the pass play called with only 30 seconds to go and a 14 point lead.

"Of course that pisses me off, I am not about to sugar coat it for you guys. We were not using our timeouts, we were letting them run out the clock. This isn't something we will soon forget, I won't let us and I hope we get to meet them again." - John Fox, Denver Broncos Head Coach
