TEXAS A&M AGGIES (1-0)
TEXAS A&M CAN'T HOLD ONTO 18 POINT LEAD
MANZIEL'S 3 INTERCEPTIONS GIVES GATORS ENOUGH CHANCES TO COME BACK
TEXAS A&M TAKES EARLY 21-3 LEAD, ONLY TO LOSE AS GATORS SCORE 28 STRAIGHT UNANSWERED IN SECOND HALF.
Once they got started, there was no stopping the Florida offense.
The word on Johnny Manziel coming out of the Spring game was that he was a versatile, explosive quarterback capable of beating you with legs or his arm. His only problem? Turning the ball over. In his first two games as the starting quarterback for the Aggies, the true freshman has shown exactly both of those qualities. In his first game, it was the mistimed pitches that led to turnovers from Manziel. In his second game, playing at home on Kyle Field for the first time, the Florida Gators defense got to him often. It was easy to tell, the young quarterback was rattled. While he did manage to reel off multiple touchdown runs in the first half, it was his 3 interceptions and the points that came off them that specifically ruined the Aggies chance at improving to 2-0 on the season.
It wasn't all Manziel's fault though. Poor tackling was evident in a few occasions as well and if it's any indication of things to come, next year will be even more difficult for the defense of Texas A&M as multiple seniors depart. The Aggies nearly pulled off the comeback, though. Down 38-28 in the 4th quarter, Texas A&M ran a read option with senior half back Christine Michael heading to the right. All game Manziel had burned the Gator defense on the same play by keeping the ball and running it himself to the left. This time, he read the play beautifully and left the ball in Michael's hands. The running back bounced off a tackler and was never touched again on a 69 yard touchdown run that brought the game to 38-35. Texas A&M elected to play defense with 2 timeouts and 4:08 left on the clock, but were unable to stop the Gators from gaining a first down, which led to Florida running out the clock.
In Manziel's second start at quarterback and his first game in the SEC, he recorded a meager 9 of 25 passing for 162 yards and 1 touchdown. He also threw 3 interceptions. It was the legs of Manziel that truly were on showcase however as he ran for 133 yards and 2 touchdowns on just 11 carries.
Next week Texas A&M takes on the undefeated Mustangs of Southern Methodist University. Expect a high scoring affair as the Aggies boast one of the nations most versatile offensive attacks against the Mustangs explosive passing attack.
