Re: A New Sun Rises Over The Desert: An Arizona Cardinals Franchise

WHISENHUNT OUT!
THE CARDS CUT TIES WITH KEN; LOOK TO MOVE ON WITH A NEW DIRECTION

GLENDALE, AR (AP) - The news came down in the early morning and was a shock to many in the Arizona organization. Ken Whisenhunt has been relieved of his coaching duties as well as the rest of his coaching staff. It was a move that no one saw coming, but after a couple years that have seen regression it was deemed the right time to move on from Ken and the coaching staff and move in a new direction. There have been very subtle whispers and rumors around Glendale that this move was coming and some coaching candidates have been mentioned but most dismissed the rumors. Alas today we saw that the rumors were true and Ken has been let go and a new coach and coaching staff have already been put in place.

Brian Kelly; yes that would be Notre Dame, Brian Kelly. He will be the new head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, the Cards were able to sneak him away from Notre Dame with a huge contract that was for 5 years and worth 40 million. It was enough for Kelly to make the leap from college and into the NFL. It won't be easy for Brian as he is coming to a team that really has no identity on offense especially at quarterback where last year two players split time and neither really took control. The Cards do of course have Larry Fitzgerald, one of the best receivers in football and someone that Kelly should be able to easily work with. And lucky for Larry, Kelly is bringing in someone at offensive coordinator that he is very familiar with and should immediately be able to have an impact on the offense.

Kurt Warner is coming back to Arizona, unfortunately for Larry it won't be to throw him balls down the field but it will be to coordinate the offense. Kurt was lured away from NFL Network and back to Arizona, something that really no one expected but the front office and Brian Kelly were able to persuade Kurt into taking the job and starting his NFL coaching career, hopefully to continued success. With Kurt we are expecting a more wide open style of offense much like the one he ran in St. Louis and Arizona, with big target wide receivers and versatile running backs who can run and catch the ball. I'm sure if Kurt could talk Marshall into coming out of retirement he would gladly take him, but for now Wells and Hightower will have to do.

On the defensive side of the ball is someone that Arizona fans will love, and someone that has been away from football a long time now. Aeneas Williams is the man, a Arizona favorite, and a man that knew how to play defense being one of the best shutdown corners in the game. Here we anticipate Williams will expect all his defensive backs be able to play man to man coverage and very little zone. Likely we will be seeing a blitz scheme and leaving his corners on an island, something Aeneas was used to in his career and having Patrick Peterson as one of his pieces to play with should make him exceptionally happy in the long run. Moving forward with all these coaching moves the Cardinals will look and play very different but it should be noted that right now the only truly untouchable players are Larry Fitzgerald and Patrick Peterson; from what we have been told everyone else is fair game.

Re: A New Sun Rises Over The Desert: An Arizona Cardinals Franchise

BIG QUESTION MARKS SURROUND ARIZONA
IF BRIAN KELLY WAS HOPING FOR A EASY TRANSITION, HE IS IN FOR A BIG SURPRISE; QUARTERBACK POSITION IN TURMOIL

It was an up and down preseason by the worst standards and there will be a lot of question marks going into the regular season and beyond for the Cardinals. The biggest concern is at quarterback where neither quarterback seemed to want to even attempt to take control of the team, and though Kolb threw for a lot of yards he had more picks then touchdowns and was still only around 50% completion. Skelton, didn't do nearly as much, was a sub 50% passer and really seemed to take a step back in progression. Lindley there have been rumors that he may in fact be cut by the Cardinals and a free agent may be signed to help the position, or at least challenge Kolb and Skelton. The running game was mostly an after thought in the preseason with only about 200 yards total being gained on the ground, once again neither player looked to comfortable in the backfield and either could be replaced.

Defensively the team looked much more at home, interceptions though not many did come for the Cards, about 1 per game and for the most part they were able to shutdown the opponents offense. On the line they were able to get a heavy pass rush which is a good sign because if they need more in coverage the Cardinals now know that the front three will be able to get some pressure on quarterbacks. Linebacking is as good as ever and they will have to improve in there weaknesses because a lot of them time they will be asked to drop back in coverage not something they have been used to. And finally on the back end, though some injuries have occurred it still looks strong in the secondary with Patrick Peterson really starting to step up and make an impact the way Williams and Kelly would like him to. It may be a slow start to the season but as players get better accustomed to the new systems things should start to smooth out and players will start making the plays the fans are used to seeing.

Game Notes
Coming into this game Brian Kelly has been very secretive about who he was going to start at quarterback, but now it was finally revealed that Kevin Kolb would in fact be the starting quarterback. Kolb had a poor preseason by starter standards but he was saved by John Skelton having a worse time on the field. Though almost everyone in and outside of the organization knows neither of these guys will be the number one guy much further into the future. Reports came out that the Cardinals were even in talks with McNabb, a true irony if he were to come and take Kevin Kolbs job.

Defensively the Cardinals were ranked #7 in the preseason but it will be tough without their leader Adrian Wilson who is lost for the week due to a hip fracture. Seattle is coming in with the 5th ranked offense mostly thanks to Lynch who tore teams up in his limited use in the preseason. Patrick Peterson will need to step up and show why he was as high of a pick as he was and make some big plays on both defense and special teams. Sacks and turnovers will be the recipe for the Cardinals to win this week in what should be a low scoring hard hitting affair between two division rivals.

KEVIN KOLB PLAYS ONE OF HIS BEST GAMES EVER TO BRING THE CARDINALS BACK

BOTTOM LEFT: RICHARD SHERMAN EATING TURF AFTER FITZGERALD RUNS AWAY FROM HIM
BOTTOM RIGHT: RUSSELL WILSON PUT SEATTLE ON HIS BACK IN HIS REGULAR SEASON DEBUT

GLENDALE, AR (AP) - Just when you thought you knew Arizona Cardinals football, Kevin Kolb does that! Now before we swoon to much over Mr. Kolb, there were things he didn't do all that well; and it is still a huge question mark that he will even be in Arizona next season. That being said, wow what performance he put on today with only 11 incompletions a far cry from what his preseason looked like. He started off on fire marching the Cardinals down the field for a quick three points and a score finding Larry Fitzgerald a could times on the drive. Sadly however the Arizona defense seemed to come into the game in LaLa land, the corners were out to lunch on most of the plays to start the game. Two Golden Tate catches later, the Cardinals found themselves down by 4 after a quick touchdown drive by Seattle. Arizona was able to make it a little closer before the end of the game however and did manage to score another field goal at the end of the quarter to make it a 7-6 game.

Kolb really didn't slow down at all in the second quarter, the problem was though the defense didn't pick it up either so Arizona quickly found itself looking at a 8 point deficit after a 41 yard Sidney Rice touchdown reception. Wilson all through the first half had his way with the Cardinals defense making big play after big play. Unfortunately Patrick Peterson on the ensuing kickoff didn't do them any favors as he fumbled the ball giving the Seahawks automatic field goal range but the game change stand was about to happen. where on the Arizona 1 yard line the defense managed to hold Arizona to -1 yard and force a field goal. To reward the defense for its first huge stop of the game Kevin Kolb led the Cards down and Beanie Wells scored a matrix like touchdown to once again bring the game withing 1 score, 17-13 at the half.

"I couldn't believe what I was seeing out there, the corners for the most part have been extremely solid but today it looked like they just completely forgot how to play the game. It just seemed like we were letting them do whatever they wanted for 3 quarters until we finally realized what was going on. I had to put ourselves in a much more basic defense and then we finally started to make some plays. I cannot praise that front 7 enough they had pressure on Wilson all game long and we could tell he was getting happy feet and it just made us hungrier for sacks." - Aeneas Williams, Arizona Cardinals Defensive Coordinator.

Sadly the third quarter didn't offer much in the way of entertainment for either team as they exchanged field goals to make it a real tight game going into the fourth quarter. With previous seasons in mind, and neither team being known as a finisher this game was very much up in the air. Kolb continued his absolutely amazing start by driving the Cardinals down the field again on a 7 minute drive that would be capped off by a Early Doucet touchdown to give the Cardinals the lead 23-20, but the game still had well over 9 minutes left. This is where the defense finally showed what they could do, forcing stop, after stop and even when Seattle thought they had a for sure game tying field goal the defense came up with a huge sack and forced a 58 yard field goal that was kicked well left. Arizona would then proceed to close out the game on three straight Beanie Wells runs to seal the victory and Brian Kelly's first win in the NFL.

"I can't say enough good things about those guys out there, they played their asses off all game long for me and all deserve a game ball. Kolb will be our starter no question moving forward and I have all intentions of keeping it that way as long as he is healthy. We executed out game plan well and Kurt called a fantastic offensive game, we ran the ball effectively and we never put Kolb into spots where we didn't think he would be comfortable. We executed extremely well and next week we need to make sure we clean up our defensive back play, if we don't it could be a very long day for us." - Brian Kelly, Arizona Cardinals Head Coach.

GAME OF THE WEEK
STEELERS BLOW LATE LEAD; FAIL TO TIE GAME ON LAST PLAY OF THE GAME

DENVER, CO (AP) - It took a heroic effort in the regular season return of Peyton Manning to do it but in the end both Manning and the Broncos were up to the task. Down by 14 points late in the 4th quarter Manning was up to his old tricks and showed Pittsburgh exactly why Denver was so excited to have him on their roster. 2 quick touchdowns to Joel Dreessen later the Broncos found themselves all tied up and with 2:13 left on the clock the Broncos thanks to Matt Prater found themselves in the lead. Big Ben and the Steelers were no where close to being down and out however as they were able to march all the way down to the Denver 27 yard line where the game tying field goal was attempted. Unfortunately for Pittsburgh Dave Rayner pushed the ball right and just barely missed it, giving Denver the heroic 41-38 win in a fantastic game to kick Sunday Night Football off.

Re: A New Sun Rises Over The Desert: An Arizona Cardinals Franchise

CARDINALS DRAFT 2012/2013 PLAYER SPOTLIGHT

QUARTERBACK DANIEL ROMEO AT THE TOP OF ARIZONA'S WISH LIST

DANIEL ROMEO (QB, FLORIDA STATE) - To quote Shakespeare right now the Arizona Cardinals are asking themselves, "Romeo, Romeo, where art thou Romeo." And with good reason as of right now he is the can't miss quarterback in the upcoming draft. As a freshman at Florida State he played very little but in his sophomore season he really took everyone by surprise, passing for over 3500 yards and 30 touchdowns. Many expect him to declare for the NFL after his junior season unless something goes terribly wrong, and after his first start that doesn't seem likely to happen. Romeo put up 350 yards and 4 touchdowns in his first game of the season and ran in for another 2 touchdowns. As of right now it would take Arizona to have a dreadful season to obtain a pick high enough to draft Romeo, but in the meantime they can continue to ask themselves, 'Where art thou'.
