Resignings

Osi Umenyoira has rejected latest contract offer by Giants

Chiefs re-signings

R Pitoitua LE Offered 1yr deal - Accepted
R Quinn QB Not retained
A Toriblo DT Not retained
K McCarthy FS Offered 1yr deal - Rejected
E Jones ROLB Not retained
D Mims RT Not retained

On the block
T Jackson LE - 8M salary with no cap penalty if cut. Target to trade or be released if cap room needed
K Boss TE - 3M salary with no cap penalty if cut. Look for Boss to be retained until it is shown he doesn't have the starting job.
S Routt CB - 2 years left on his contract with bonus, but his lack of production might spell his time is up in KC, only time will tell.
M Cassel QB - 2 years left on his contract with bonus. To cut or trade would give give the Chiefs less cap space than the bonus penalty. Still if he loses out to anyone brought in to compete he could be cut for cap space next year.

Interview with Coach Kastle

Thoughts on Defense
We need to have a strong front seven, that being said we currently have 3 of those seven who are more than capable at their positions. There are others who have the skills to grow into the roles, it is just a matter of whether they can develop and fill out. The secondary has a young anchor in Eric (Berry), although we do have some holes to be filled around him either inside or outside the organization.

Thoughts on Offense
We have a good line and a good set of backs in Charles and Casey to keep our strong running game going. The key for this offense is going to be in the development of the receivers. Charles isn't the best receiving back and the young talent in the WR core beyond Bowe is still unproven.

Those on the hot seat
Mostly it is due to high salaries more than anything. However we will be going into the free agency period with just over 25M in cap room not reserved for our draft picks. This is a decent amount and only time will tell if we can convince all our targets to join us in KC.

Draft
We currently have the 3rd overall pick in this years draft and we intend to use it. At the moment that means we will be drafting what we hope to be a core player for years to come. We will not be actively attempting to trade down, however, much like the Rams a year ago if an offer comes along that we feel we make out like bandits then a trade is a possibility. I can't go into any of our targets for any of the rounds due to the competitive nature of the draft but we currently would like to draft both sides of the ball in this draft.

News
Patriots have announced Brian Billick as their new head coach after Chad Masters retired
Lovie Smith was announced as the Philidelphia Eagles
Jack Kerrigan is new coach in NO. He takes over a team that made it to the Conference Championship. No word on why his predecessor was replaced.

Scouting
Senior Bowl Suprise
It was a rough season for TE Salem Woods out of Rutgers, but a top-flight combine performance and a good Senior Bowl have pushed him up to 15th in mock drafts.

Is Tovar the Greatest?
After a splendid Senior Bowl, scouts were rubbed the wrong way when South Carolina WR Emmitt Tovar announced he was the greatest of all-time.

Run Stuff
Great against the run, Oregon RE Cesar Williams was even better at pressuring QB at the Senior Bowl.

Japanese Sensation
Hawaii HB Satomi Sakamoto is making American football a smash in Japan. NFL teams see him as an excellent player and a great marketing opportunity.

Scouting
Offense - QB, WR, TE, LG
Defense - DE, DT, CB, FS

QB
Louis Glover, Georgia
A West coast QB who has a cannon for an arm. Somewhat mobile, with some health concerns. Stands at 6'4'' 227 so can take a beating when needed. #1 Ranked QB R1 P9

Joe Harris, Illinois
Upon a second look KC found him to be even more raw than first thought. Currently ranked #1 QB at 6th pick 2nd round may be asking too much.

Andrew Kirby, Houston
Has fallen to #5 QB even as Glover has been removed due to injury. Taller than Harris, stronger arm, more accurate and smother play action execution. Looks like a value at his projected end of 4th round. #5 ranked QB R4 P25

WR
Emmitt Tovar, South Carolina
Continues to be an unreasonable pick for the Chiefs at #3 with no real need for a WR. Look for them to jump if his attitude drops him into the second round. #1 ranked WR R1 P9

Dee Minor, Arizona St.
Skill set seems to play out in the slot receiver role, little more gained from second look. #2 ranked WR R1 P22

AC Phillips, Arizona St.
Late entry into the draft, good but not great speed and little strength to fight after the catch. #8 ranked WR R3 P18

Tevin Sam, Kentucky
Late round sleeper. Decent speed, decent hands, moderate return ability. Won't be a keystone player, but shouldn't hurt you either. Should have trouble with any but the most basic of open catches. #13 ranked WR R5 P22

TE
Salem Woods, Rutgers
Decent speed TE who will help stretch the field. Blocking leaves some to be desired. Monster jumping ability. #1 ranked TE R1 P15

Raysean Green, South Dakota
Decent hands, but horrible blocking skills. Average speed, average catching, just average. #6 ranked TE R5 P6

LT
Michael Etherton, Oregon
With all the hype across college football about Etherton and his impressive combine the Chiefs took a look at this prospect. Excellent pass blocker, but lacks the agility to get out with the HB and be a lead blocker. #1 LT R1 P2

LG

Troy Peterson, Stanford
More of a run blocker than pass, but has skills in both. Average pass blocking skills at best, lacks the speed to make the pulls #1 ranked LG R1 P18

Justin Johnson, Penn State
Mauler who will move his defender around on the line. Does not have the speed to make the tough pulls. Oblivious to whatever is not in front of him. #2 ranked LG R2 P7

Brandon Jones, San Jose St.
Balanced blocker in both run and the pass, good strength. Slowest of those scouted in both speed and acceleration but the most well rounded prospect. # 3 ranked LG R2 P14

DE
Cesar Williams, Oregon
Decent speed from the edge, should be able to hold down the end on either a 3-4 or 4-3 front. All the data points to this man being able to make an impact NOW! #1 ranked RE R1 P3

Keorris Oliver, UAB
3-4 end who excels at strength, not speed. # 4 ranked RE R3 P22

Keenan Parker, Ohio State
3-4 end who plays much like Oliver but on the opposite side. Slower, weaker, less aware than Oliver. Much more raw #1 ranked LE R2 P2

Max McCadden, Mississippi St.
More versatle 3-4 end. Sacrifices some of the strength you get in other ends from this draft for a bit more speed. Along with the sacrificed speed you get bad finesse moves. A speed rusher with a mauler skill set. Odd combo that may or may not work at NFL level. #6 ranked LE R3 P8

DT
Ross Lark, TCU
Top ranked player in the draft plays out to be a 4-3 pass rusher from the inside. Should be too risky of a pick for KC with their #3 pick since he doesn't fit the system. #1 ranked DT R1 P1

JaWuan Reese, FIU
Again not a great fit for the KC 3-4 defense as he plays out to be more of a 4-3 DT than a NT. Although possibly worth a shot since he has outstanding strength and size. Has decent enough speed and awareness to chase down and make a play if carrier can be held up for a second. #5 ranked DT R3 P3

CB
CT Patterson, Colorado
Fits the system, and is one of the few decently tall CB's of this draft class. Moderate speed with more skill in press coverage than vs man or zone. #13 ranked CB R4 P20

Jabari Tyler, Arkansas
Wrong defensive type and only noteworthy skills are his outstanding speed and man coverage. Has the recognition to get to the ball carrier but lacks the skills to properly pursue and tackle him. #16 ranked CB R5 P12

Brad Dotson, Clemson
Great speed, but horrible at man coverage. Should have the ability to knock down quite a few balls, but lacks the hands to make the pick. Can help on return team. #20 ranked CB R5 P28

Jamarious Kates, Delaware
A versatile defender with good but not great speed. Should not lapse in coverage. #24 ranked CB R6 P20

FS
Jalen Thomas, Miami
Ball hawking FS with burner speed. Liability if pushed up into man coverage. Has the ability to chase down and get to the ball carrier. Draft stock has fallen as he dropped from #1 to #3 FS. #3 ranked FS R2 P27

Adam Jones, Western Ontario
Within a thin FS class he is the lowest ranked FS but plays out to be a decent fit for the KC defense. Decent speed with good acceleration. Seems to lose track of plays at some times. #4 ranked FS R7 P6

Fastest 40 Ever
With the fastest 40 since 1989, Hawaii HB Satomi Sakamoto has some scouts thinking about him as a top-10 pick, durability issues or not.

Etherton Confident
Oregon LT Michael Etherton amassed an impressive 40 reps on the bench press, and he even ran a decent 40. He received plenty of praise from the scouts.

Not Ready
There will be no combine for Georgia QB Louis Glover , but he will participate in a pro day. In addition, his injury is not fully healed, which played into the decision.

Poised Perfectly
Georgia QB Louis Glover impressed scouts with his poise and toughness after coming back from an injury and fighting through the pain.

I decided to do a more of copy/paste/edit style with the scouting because that is what I imagine happens with the real NFL. You scout, then second trip is taking what you have and adding/subtracting based on your new info. Let me know if I need to highlight any changes to make that easier to read/understand.

Re: Besieging the Kastle

Off-season Week 7

Week 7 of the off-season saw teams focusing on determining what holes will need to be filled during the draft and finishing up any last minute scouting reports from pro-days. Lets hope every team was able to be finished with their updated draft day big board.

Recap of free agency is to come along with team needs, probably after I go have dinner with our friends in a bit, then the draft! Merry Christmas all.

C'MON MAN!
Patriots taking 5 DE in FA, enter the draft with 6LE, 3RE, and 6DT...15 Dlineman.

Steelers 14 ranked offense in 2012 takes no offensive signings?!

Haynesworth is back in Tennessee, will the second round be like the first?

Position Battles

QB
M Cassel and L Glover will battle it out in the preseason. At the moment the veteran has the advantage, but with this run based offense it should come down to who has the better play action and accuracy.

HB2
The backup HB position should play out to be an easy victory for B Scott the new signing, however Coach Kastle has said that he was going to also look at and consider C Gray and the UDFA L Brassell, although they seem like long shots

WR2
This battle should be a good one. Both J Baldwin and S Breaston are equally rated by coaches and it is anyones game with the loser being placed in the slot.

WR4
This is a 3 way battle between a trio of return specialist. D McCluster and UDFA's E Owens and C Lilly should fight it out for the WR spot, don't be suprised if return play determines if any of the three get the boot.

TE
This is another 3 way battle. Rookie 4th round pick R Green will start as the #2 TE with Veterans K Boss, #1, and T Moeaki, #3, all fighting it out for the TE position. Blocking will most likely play a big part in this battle with the Chiefs run first philosophy.

LT
M Etherton comes in on high praises and a high price. Trading away last years starting LE in order to move up to acquire him means the Chiefs need him to produce now. But at the moment the starting role entering camp goes to 1year pro D Stephenson who showed glimpses in limited time last year that he really wants this job!

DE
Both positions are up for grabs with both of last years starters no longer with the team. LE will be held by R Pitoitua and it is his to lose to either rookie E Moss or 1year pro J Long. RE is current held by A Bailey because of the teams knowledge of him versus new signing V Martin.

ILB
One position is locked up by Derrick Johnson, the other is currently held by B Siler with D Ellerbe and physical freak J Dwyer looking to dispose him. Another battle is going to be for the first LB off the bench with Ellerbe, Dwyer, rookie McClain, and D Moses currently battling for time.

CB
#1 spot is taken by B Flowers, with #2-4 currently held by Routt, Jefferson, and Arenas. Although with the teams discontent with last years on field performance by Routt it could be an all out battle for those 3 spots on the field. Rookies S Brown, R Rivers, and 7th round pick CT Patterson seem unlikely to make the team.

FS
2nd round pick Jalen Thomas seems to have a slight edge in this battle. But K Lewis and J McGraw both have a shot to step up if the rookie slips. J Jarrett may play a limited role but with only B Sanders, a known injury waiting to happen backing up hard hitting starter E Berry anyone of this group could step in at SS opening up room for Jarrett.

K
Rookie R Cummings was brought in to compete with R Succop but the veteran figures to keep his job.

KR/PR
McCluster, Wylie, Owens, and Lilly will all try and lock down the returner role with McCluster the incumbent.

C Pressley is now a Falcon
