INTERNATIONAL SERIES PREVIEW: AN INTERVIEW WITH RHYS WITHENSHAW

Above: Wembley Stadium will host it's sixth regular season NFL game this Sunday

This Sunday, Wembley Stadium will be once again be the centre of attention in the NFL world, as the New England Patriots take on the St.Louis Rams in the seventh game in the NFL International Series, the sixth in London. The game truly is growing globally, supported by the Arizona Cardinals hiring of Rhys Withenshaw this season, who became the first Englishman to coach in the NFL. NFL.COM's "Around The League" caught up with the first year head coach earlier this week for an interview.

ATL: How important do you think the international series is to the NFL?
RW: I think it's very important, it's a game that is starting to catch on around the world. It's up to the guys in charge to take advantage of that. The sport has tremendous potential, it could be very popular.

ATL: The NFL have tried before to expand into other countries, including the formation of NFL Europe. Why, in your view, didn't that work?
RW: Uh, simply the timing of it, I think. It wasn't necessarily a bad idea, but it was before it's time. It's the same with other sports. Every time I go back to England and then come back here, it's clear how the popularity of football has grown over here. There are a couple of guys on the team who are into it, they have a team. Ten years ago, nothing like this would have happened. But, the worlds is becoming more connected, and educated to other cultures and sports.

When you say football, you mean soccer.
RW: Ha ha, no I don't. I know what I said.

ATL: In 2005, Arizona beat the 49ers in NFL Fútbol Americano, the first regular season game to be held outside the US. Would you be interested in playing a match in England, or anywhere else overseas?
RW: Absolutely. It'd be a dream. Obviously, we may have to give up a home game to go over there, which I'm not sure would go down well with all of the fans, which is understandable, but I'd like to think we could work something out.

ATL: Now, one last question before you go. Do you think London will ever get a franchise?
RW: Will it? It's possible, sure. I'm not sure how it'd work, with travel and stuff, I know jet lag can be a killer. I think first the league would have to be confident enough that attendances wouldn't drop, because it's no longer just one special event. But it's not my job to work those things out.

ATL: Thank you for your time, good luck on Monday.
RW: Thank you.

THE REPUBLIC
Beanie Wells Appreciation Edition
THE JOE BLOGGS ARIZONA CARDINALS BLOG:

Week 7 review, Week 8 preview, Beanie's big day & other stuff:

Week 7 review:

Another win for the Cardinals. Yeehaw! That's five on the bounce. Another win where, for large chunks of the game they didn't look particularly great, but more stingy play on defense meant they didn't have to do much on offense. The fact that Beanie Wells put the team on his back to get at least something done on offense was nice too.

Week 8 preview:

Monday Night Football for the Cards this week, as they host the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers are likely to present the toughest test for the Cards since week 2's loss against the Patriots. The 49ers run defense has been tighter than a duck's butt so far this season, and seeing as Beanie Wells has been the main source of offensive output for the Cards this season, if Beanie can't get the ground game going, then Skelton could be in for a tough time.

Beanie's big day:

If you haven't heard, Beanie Wells played alright last Sunday. 45 carries, 290 yards and three touchdowns alright. He came in for some high praise from Trey Wingo after the game.

Other stuff:

POWies:

NFC Defensive POWie: Zack Bowman - Minnesota Vikings
AFC Defensive POWie: Ras-I Dowling - New England Patriots

NFC Offensive POWie: Beanie Wells - Arizona Cardinals
AFC Offensive POWie: Trent Richardson - Cleveland Browns

There it is! Our first Cardinal to take home a POWie award. In all fairness though, if he hadn't have won it this week, I probably would have screamed "FIX!" at my screen and thrown something.

Surprising to see Zack Bowman in there. I suppose being part of the defense that got torched by the offensive player of the week for 290 yards and three touchdowns is moot if you have an interception and recover a fumble that gets turned over on review.
