RUNNER BEAN-IE!

Beanie Wells leads the Cards to a fifth straight win, beating the Vikings

The Cardinals are one of the hottest teams in the NFL right now, and they overcame a stuttering start to move to 5-2 on the season, thanks to a massive day from running back Beanie Wells

Ask Rhys Withenshaw. Ask any Cardinal player. Or fan. It's no coincidence that that Arizona's good run of form has co-incided with Beanie Wells becoming hot. After missing the first week of the season through injury and being stopped by by the Patriots in week two, Wells has since put together five games of one hundred yards plus on the ground, his most recent on Sunday more than "just" over one hundred, after rushing for two-hundred and ninety yards and reaching the pay dirt three times against a porous Vikings defense.

The Vikings had the 30th ranked defense in the league coming in, but in the first quarter you'd have been forgiven for thinking the ranking table was upside down, as they got pressure to John Skelton consistently, even forcing him to throw a pick alongside doing an at least passable job of containing Beanie Wells on the ground. But for as inconsistent as the Vikings defense can be, going from awful to great and back again within an instant, so can Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder. After cooly completing a third down to keep alive their second drive of the day, he threw an interception on the very next play, trying to force a ball over the top to tight end Kyle Rudolph which was easily snagged by Kerry Rhodes. The interception put the Cards in great field position as they looked to open the scoring, but they appeared to be robbed of the chance when Michael Floyd lost grip of the ball after being crushed by Zack Bowman who recovered the would-be fumble, had the decision not been overturned on review, allowing the Cards to keep possession.

Starting the second quarter with the ball at the Minnesota nineteen, the Cards failed to punch it in, having to settle for a field goal and a 3-0 lead. After a scoreless first quarter, the Vikings were eager to get on the board themselves, and they did on their next possession. Deep in their own territory, the Vikings set up a screen on the right side for Percy Harvin who, after following his blocks got to the sideline and showed the Arizona secondary a clean pair of heels, streaking away for the score to put the Vikings on top, 7-3.

But the Cards needn't have worried. On more than one occasion this season they have shown a tendency to score and follow it up quickly with another score. And the Cards one-two punch was on display again.

Responding to Minnesota's best drive of the game, Arizona marched up the field, with Beanie Wells keeping the markers moving, making John Skelton's job a whole lot easier. Snap, handoff, first down. Rinse and repeat. All the way down to the one yard line, where the aforementioned Wells punched it in from a yard. Jay Feely converted it, placed the Vikings at the twenty from the restart, and Ponder threw another interception. Just like that. Skelton came back onto the field for one play, hitting Michael Floyd with a five yard pass into the end zone, making it 17-7. The Vikings would get the ball one more time before the half, and would end up punting again, pinning the Cardinals in at the four. What happened next was unbelievable. Similar to Steve Slaton's touchdown against the Cards in week 4, Wells ran 94 yards trailblazing everybody in his wake, taking it to the house. The Cards put up twenty four points in the second quarter, twenty one of them within the final three minutes.

The Cards second quarter made the rest of the game a formality in all honesty. The two teams exchanged field goals in the third quarter in what was otherwise a punt fest. Arizona had no real great need for points and their offense certainly knew it, content to run down the clock and let Beanie Wellls rack up yardage. The Vikings offense did have a real need for points, but they didn't look likely. Christian Ponder was throwing interceptions left, right and centre, and Adrian Peterson was looking like more of a threat running routes in the backfield than when he was being handed the ball.

The Vikings had a chance to at least make a contest of it at the start of the fourth quarter. After a drive that, to the shock of everyone, may have actual resembled a football team, they found themselves at the one yard line, thanks to some clutch completions by Ponder to Jerome Simpson and more so Jesse Carlson, who seemed to be emerging as Ponder's favourite target, hauling in three catches on the drive, including one after a deflection off the helmet of Arizona tackle Dan Williams.

The first play at the one was a handoff to Adrian Peterson, which lost a yard. The second play was another handoff, which gained a yard, leaving the Vikings essentially where they started, now facing a third and goal from the one yard line. This time Ponder took the snap and looked for a target, only for his pass intended for Percy Harvin to be broken up by A.J Jefferson, who was seeing a lot more snaps thanks to Patrick Peterson leaving the game in the first quarter due to an injury sustained on a punt return.

So facing a fourth and goal, one yard out and down 27-10, the nature of the contest was sure to be decided by the next play. Anything less than a touchdown for Minnesota and this one was over. Inexplicably, Leslie Frazier called for the field goal unit, a move that was greeted by a chorus of boos from the home fans, who had earlier booed Christian Ponder after back-to-back drives in the third quarter had ended in interceptions.

The call to settle for a field goal in a situation where only a touchdown would have sufficed potentially shows an alarming lack of faith in Christian Ponder, which is surprising when looking at the hot start he had this season, even winning offensive Player of the week in week three.

Arizona rubbed more salt into the wound late on, with Beanie Wells cruising in for his third score of the day. Easily the most impressive player on the field Sunday, Beanie ended up running for 290 yards on 45 carries, both season highs for the half back. Completely outshining a running back with the quality of Adrian Peterson, Beanie Wells is quietly putting together a season that may warrant his inclusion in the conversation of the best running backs currently out there. Whether it warrants it or not, Wells is certainly a huge reason behind the Cardinals current form.
