Re: TEAMBUILDER MAC DYNASTY: LA SALLE EXPLORERS (NCAA 13)

LA SALLE MARCH GRINDS TO A HALT
Huskies hang on after an Explorers defense lapse in the third, 20-16

Oct. 26, DeKalb IL - The La Salle defense went on a slight snooze and that gave enough time for Northern Illinois relief quarterback Matt Williams need to launch a 27-yard pass to Juwan Brescacin for the go ahead touchdown in the third quarter. Andre Howard and Draymond West had one final quarter ahead but failed to score. Defense held forth in the fourth as the Huskies hanged on for important victory over the streaking Explorers, 20-16. The Huskies needed this win to get back in MAC-East after losing to Toledo and lowly Massachusetts.

Williams entered the game in the second after back-up QB Matt McIntosh suffered a concussion. With star quarterback Jeff Lynch already out for the season, NIU Coach Dave Doeren needed a miracle against La Salle's passing defense. It happened with 1:50 remaining in the third as the vaunted Explorers went on a short and sudden doze allowing Williams to escape momentarily for that brilliant pass to Brescacin.

The La Salle defense relaxed for a second and just as quick Matt Williams threw a touchdown pass.

Re: TEAMBUILDER MAC DYNASTY: LA SALLE EXPLORERS (NCAA 13)

LA SALLE TOPS EASTERN MICHIGAN IN CONVINCING FASHION, 31-3
Andre Howard puts up a show for Javonti Greene and the Eagles

Nov. 2, Philadelphia PA - The La Salle rushing defense knew what to expect and was mentally prepared to stop Javonti Greene. The Eastern Michigan passing defense was geared for battle and no one knew what hit them. Andre Howard took the starring role amidst the Greene-West tussle and the La Salle Explorers routed the Eastern Michigan Eagles in convincing fashion, 31-3.

Howard passed for 282 yards en route to three touchdowns, two by Sean Harrison, as Greene tried viciously to bring the Eagles offense near the end zone. Greene ran for 143 yards in 28 carries but failed to score. Draymond West made a good account of himself rushing for 100 yards in 22 attempts. But it was the La Salle passing defense that made the difference as the Eastern Michigan junior quarterback Tyler Benz was reduced to a struggling rookie. Benz had a pitiful evening with a minuscule 72 yards passing, was sacked 4 times and intercepted twice. The Eagles were a good team but they came to the McCarthy Stadium not believing they can beat the Explorers.

Sean Harrison had 100 yards reception and two touchdowns.

Javonti Greene huffed and puffed but the La Salle defense was there for him.

Re: TEAMBUILDER MAC DYNASTY: LA SALLE EXPLORERS (NCAA 13)

A MUCH-NEEDED WIN AT KALAMAZOO, 44-24
La Salle walks off with a victory as Howard shines again

Nov. 9, Kalamazoo MI - La Salle routed Western Michigan anew, 44-24, and underrated quarterback Andre Howard will never go unnoticed from now on. Often the credit went to either the Explorers defense or with running back Draymond West but that will change as Howard again delivered a performance only a star could give.

Howard passed for 338 yards including two touchdown receptions. He drove the Explorers to the red zone 15 times, 8 of which were consummated at the end zone including his own 3-yard run. The La Salle offensive line was spectacular just the same enabling the sophomore quarterback from Belleville NJ to go 22 of 31 for a 70% pass completion with no interceptions. He was never sacked and virtually went untouched.

On the other hand, West surpassed the 1000-rushing yard for the second time in his young career with a another scintillating performance. The sophomore back from Gonzales LA had 175 yards today which included a 13-yard touchdown to move him closer to his personal best of 1294 set last season.

Another sophomore Coney Veney, who was one of the last players signed up by Coach Larry Coker and whose kicking ability was in no doubt questionable among his peers is about to prove all his detractors wrong as he is a game away for a perfect season. Veney has not missed all season long, 16 field goal attempts not to mention 97 extra points.

Worthy of a star, Andre Howard shines again with 338 yards passing.

Not only can he run but Draymond West is one of La Salle's leading receivers.

In other MAC action, the Ohio Bobcats virtually clinched MAC East with their 7th straight conference victory against the hapless Miami RedHawks, 28-21, even as the dethroned champion Buffalo Bulls came back to beat the Bowling Green Falcons, 27-24. Heisman favorite Beau Blankenship ran 5 yards to the end zone with 57 seconds remaining to break the tie and win it for Ohio. Blankenship's 2 touchdowns from 24 carries for 99 yards bucked the performance of Miami's Austin Boucher who finished with 263 passing yards and 3 touchdowns.

Toledo and Northern Illinois keep their MAC West hopes alive with victories over Navy and Ball State respectively. David Fluellen had 3 touchdowns from 17 carries for 98 yards to lead the Rockets over the Midshipmen. Fluellen, Terrance Owens and the MAC West champion Rockets play next at the McCarthy Stadium against the Explorers on November 16 to seal their championship fate. Meanwhile, Akeem Daniels ran for 148 yards in 26 carries for three touchdowns as the Huskies hanged on despite the star performance of quarterback Keith Wenning who passed 62% for 341 yards and three touchdowns.

Re: TEAMBUILDER MAC DYNASTY: LA SALLE EXPLORERS (NCAA 13)

EXPLORERS GIVE AWAY MAC-WEST CROWN IN THEIR OWN BACKYARD
La Salle outrageously shaken with this home loss to Toledo

Nov. 16, Philadelphia PA - It was to be the biggest game of the season as La Salle fans from all walks of life came to show up at the McCarthy Stadium. The La Salle Explorers were hours away of crowning themselves MAC-West champions if and only they can beat current kings the Toledo Rockets just as quickly they disposed of others. But Torrance Owens and Bernard Reedy had none of this and so were the Rockets crippling defense. Now the Toledo Rockets are now a win away from retaining MAC-West after routing the La Salle Explorers 35-17.

The Toledo defense stopped the La Salle rushing offense and intercepted three Howard passes.

Toledo Coach Matt Campbell knew that to keep the Rockets in the game they have to mark both Andre Howard and Draymond West. Howard was intercepted three times and West could only manage 84 yards in 21 carries with no touchdowns. Meanwhile Owens took matters in his own hands. After La Salle went on an early lead with a 75-yard touchdown reception by David Carter, Owens ran 3 yards to the end zone then threw a pass to Reedy to give the Rockets the lead for good and this were all in the first quarter. The senior quarterback from Brunswick OH was not through yet. He went long twice for two TD passes, a 78-yarder to James Green and a 68 with Reedy, as the La Salle coverage failed to keep up. Owens was 60% in completed passes with 354 yards and three touchdowns, Howard was a yard more but was only 40%. Moreover, the much vaunted La Salle rushing defense failed to held forth allowing two TDs, the first with Owens then the game-clinching mad scramble by his backup Sean Turner.

Terrance Owens was unstoppable scoring on a 3-yard run then passing for three more touchdowns.

Toledo only needs to win against Western Michigan next weekend at the Glass Bowl to regain MAC-West and the right to play newly-crowned MAC-East kings the Ohio Bobcats starring Tyler Tettleton and Beau Blankenship for the MAC Championship at the Ford Field on December 7. Should they lose and Northern Illinois beat Eastern Michigan, then the Huskies will steal the MAC-West crown. Should they both fail to win, Toledo with the better average than NIU and La Salle brings home MAC-West.

For La Salle the season is definitely over and it could not happen at the most unlikely location, at the McCarthy Stadium their home soil in Philadelphia, where the Explorers were 4-1 prior to this game.
