Coach's Comments
Hey, at least we didn't get shut out. Georgia gave me a good old SEC welcome to the NCAA. The margin of defeat was not even as high as I anticipated it would be. But I guess that just goes to show that rain can really affect a football game.
I already know what everyone's going to be saying. Alex Zordich threw five interceptions!! Off with his head! But the situations that we found ourselves in late in the game caused him to have to take a lot more chances downfield than he normally would. Let's not forget that he did go 5/5 for 100 yards (after penalties) on our only scoring drive. I have to admit though I'm not very happy with that statistic either. This game could have been very interesting if we hadn't turned the ball over in the redzone so many times.
Players who impressed:
JR(RS) TE Jimmy Gordon - Surprisingly our leading receiver on the game with 81 yards. Though he didn't catch a touchdown, he did make crucical catches. 44 YAC on the game for this TE
SR(RS) MLB Scott Pettigrew - I didn't notice too much of him on our roster prior to this game. But whenever he was on the field, either backing up Isaac Baugh or alongside Skinner, his presence was felt. He recorded two tackles for a loss and the interception that set up our scoring drive.
JR SS Okoye Houston - I did not think he would have such a big impact. But 13 tackles is nothing to frown at. Unless you're Lee Skinner, two tackles behind on the game and the leading tackler from last year.
Players who underwhelmed:
JR(RS) HB Branden Oliver - For whatever reason, we just could not get the running game going consistently with Branden Oliver. Don't get me wrong, Georgia has a great defense. But you would think that the star player of the team would try to step it up a little bit more come big-time games like this one. 51 yards with one run for 20+ yards and 0 BTK for Branden. Backup Brandon Murie went for 15 yards and a BTK on 2 runs.
The defensive line - With the exception of SR(RS) LE Steven Means (4tkls, 1 solo, 2 tfl), no defensive lineman had more than two tackles. We recorded a grand total of zero sacks on the game. SO(RS) Center Trevor Sales had as many or more tackles (1) than DT Wyatt Cahill (1), DT Kristjan Sokoli (1) and RE Colby Way (0). They ran all over us the entire game. Georgia's offensive line is tough, but we should've been able to do better than that.
I found out a lot about the team by playing against a top ten opponent. Next week I'll learn even more when we face FCS East team Morgan State.

Coach's Comments
What a hell of a way to open at home. And such a superb rebound after the beatdown from last week. Morgan State had no idea what they were getting into when they signed up to play Coach Wile's Buffalo Bulls.
Another rain game, but that didn't seem to phase anyone out there be it Alex Zordich, the running backs or the receivers. Alex Neutz in particular with his seven catches and over a hundred yards receiving was impressive again. Sadly still no touchdown for him though. Alex is back to 3-5 TD/INT now after throwing touchdown passes to two unlikely receivers, TE Jimmy Gordon and a 45-yard bomb to WR Devon Hughes.
Players who impressed:
The running backs - What a bounce-back game for Branden Oliver. He had 246 all purpose yards on the night, including a beautiful 55 yard punt return touchdown on our first play of the game. He carried the team for the majority of the game. But when he was out, our other young backs stepped up as well. Brandon Murie got himself his first touchdown of the season to go along with 65 yards and a 9.2 average. Future starter James Potts even got some playing time in the 4th quarter, rushing for 30 yards on 3 attempts.
JR(RS) WR Alex Neutz - Whenever a big play was needed on third down, Alex Zordich would rely on go-to guy Alex Neutz. He is still in the hunt for a touchdown but has 178 yards through his first two games. A goal for Alex is to start averaging seven catches a game and to become a leader of the receiving corps.
SO(RS) CB Cortney Lester - The Morgan State team tried really hard to score a touchdown. But whenever they would get close, Cortney Lester would jump the route and claim the football for his own. Two interceptions is an excellent feat for anyone to accomplish. Here's to many more in Cortney's next three seasons.
Players who underwhelmed:
I would say the entire team impressed me today. It would seem as if players were not performing up to standards based on the stats, but in reality that's just how bad the other team played.
We thoroughly thrashed our opponent this week and hopefully that will give us some momentum going into conference play. It starts after our BYE week at home versus Kent State, which should prove to be a very good game.
It's nice to have an extra week of practice in preparation for the opener versus Kent State. Our phenomenal 41-0 home win over Morgan State really has the UB faithful excited for what's to come. Hopefully we can get a big rowdy crowd together for next week's game. The Georgia loss was disappointing but not particularly surprising. Nobody was too angry with me over it. And if they were worried, all they had to do was wait for the Morgan State blowout. That really boosted everyone's confidence around campus. Branden Oliver came alive versus the weaker opponent with over 250 all-purpose yards. It'll be interesting to see how he will perform against a team that is more or less equal to ours. Kent State will be a great opponent and should provide us with a very exciting divisional game. They are coming off a 13-10 OT victory over Kentucky in week 2, so they will meet us with a lot of momentum on their side.
Aaron Rawlins hard committed early to the Buffalo Bulls and I'm happy to have him as my first recruit as a head coach. He will not likely play for a few seasons, as our current centers (Trevor Sales, Gabriel Barbe and Jake Pickett) are all either freshman or sophomore players. There is even a possibility that he will be switched to another position of need on the offensive line like LG or RT. Four prospects are visiting UB in week 4. FB P.J. Johnson and OLB Willie Smith are of particular interest to the coaching staff and I. Hopefully with a win over Kent we can convince these talented players to come to Buffalo.
