The Maryland Terrapins had a disappointing season in 2011. After starting out the season on a high, beating Miami in Week 1, everything went downhill from there. The Terps ended the season at 2-10. Maryland has fired offensive coordinator Gary Crowton and defensive coordinator Todd Bradford and replaced them with Mike Locksley and Brian Stewart, respectively.
The Terps' 2012 season just took a huge hit. After Danny O'Brien announced he'd be leaving Maryland for Wisconsin, C.J. Brown tore his ACL while making a cut in a running drill. The Terps will turn to freshman QB Perry Hills as their starter. Devin Burns will serve as his backup. Caleb Rowe was redshirted, but Randy Edsall announced that he is the third-string and that he would burn his redshirt if necessary. The Terps gain transfer Ricardo Young next season, but will have to get by with 3 QBs this season.
This was a game that worried many Terp fans at halftime. They had yet to see their Terrapins take charge of what was supposed to be an easy game. But the team did a lot better in the second half, and came out of Byrd Stadium with a 24-14 victory.
RB Wes Brown did very well in his first game as a Terrapin, rushing 18 times for 125 yards and 2 scores. Brandon Ross also proved to be a useful backup, rushing 11 times for 42 yards. QB Perry Hills did a very serviceable job in his first start with Maryland, and was extremely efficient. He showed the ability to stand strong in the pocket and go through his progressions well. He also had an impressive 12 yard scamper for a first down. He even ran the read-option once for about 7 yards. That versatility should help the Terps with the absence of C.J. Brown.
The defense looked very off at times, but did force 3 interceptions, and even returned one for a TD. The bottom line is that they made stops when they had to. The special teams was very poor, and mainly because of unnecessary penalties. Stefon Diggs got no blocking on special teams, but was able to contribute well on offense, catching 4 passes for 54 yards, 40 of those after the catch.
The Terps head to Philadelphia to face the Temple Owls next weekend, and will look to come home to College Park at 2-0.

Coach Randy Edsall said that, while Wes Brown is listed as the starter, he believes that the Terps have 4 talented RBs who will all see playing time this season. "It's a luxury to have 4 guys you can cycle in on any given day. There are going to be games where Wes [Brown] isn't feeling it, and maybe Albert [Reid] is. Or maybe Justus [Pickett] is having a rough quarter, so we sub in Brandon [Ross]. They're all going to get playing time. I will say this: Wes will get first crack. If he's not working, we go to Brandon. Then Albert or Justus. It's not to say we don't have a good RB, we have 4 good ones that should all be rewarded for their efforts."
The rushing attack simply wasn't working. Whether it was Wes Brown, Brandon Ross, or Albert Reid, the Terps couldn't get anything going on the ground. Therefore, the offense rested on the calm shoulders of freshman QB Perry Hills. Hills delivered big-time for the Terps in Philadelphia this afternoon. Calm and collected, he led both the game-tying and game-winning drives in the 4th quarter on the road.
The Terps come back home to College Park to face Randy Edsall's old team, UConn, on Saturday.
