THE TENNESSEE STANDARD

Last Second Heroics Save Titans

By Daniel Smith

What a heart-attack of a game on Monday Night Football. There aren't many games that can say they went down to the last second but Tennessee makes a habit of them it seems. Whilst this wasn't quite the Music City Miracle it certainly came close with Locker throwing two huge bombs late on and the Titans managing to scrape the win. You can let that breath out now Nashville.

The Titans won the toss but deferred and Oakland started off with a rough patch. McFadden wasn't really running well and second year linebacker Zac Brown was everywhere to start. The Raiders managed a first down but then ended up having to punt. Locker started strongly and found new tight end Dennis Pitta on a play-action route for 29 yards. However the run game was as absent in the first quarter as it had been over the pre-season and Johnson was tackled behind the line of scrimmage on a 3rd and short to force a long Titans field goal attempt. Kicker Blair Walsh had the distance from 55 yards but the ball just moved to the left and veered wide of the posts. When the Raiders next came out onto the field rookie Blaire Mason took over where Brown left off and hit Palmer on a hand-off before McFadden could get there and then forced a throwaway on 3rd and long. The Titans run game got it's longest play of the game, and the year so far including pre-season, when fullback Mike Cox blew open a huge hole and CJ went straight through for 35 yards. However on the next set of downs Locker got caught out and the Raiders forced another 50+yard attempt from Walsh but this time Walsh was straight and true and put the Titans up 3-0 as the quarter ended.

Oakland made a more promising start to the 2nd quarter with a bubble screen to rookie receiver Marquis Wells went for a 30 yard gain. The Titans defense weren't going to stand for that for long though and Kamerion Wimbley hit Palmer hard for a loss and then on 3rd and long Alterraun Verner blitzed from the slot corner position and put Palmer on the ground again. For a time it seemed as though rookie Cameron Jones was the only Titans player to be able to catch the ball as the football hit the ground over and over again. Then on a 3rd down Locker threw a touch pass to Kendall Wright but the ball bounced out of Wright's hands and dropped into cornerback Jerraud Powers' firm grip. A complete fluke that could in no way be called Locker's fault but that's how it goes. The Titans did challenge but the call was upheld on review. The Raiders couldn't fully capitalize on the turnover however and the Titans defense held strong in the redzone, forcing an easy field goal to tie the score. The two minute warning came and went but, aside from a Carson Palmer sack by pre-season standout Jurrell Casey on a Hail Mary attempt, the halftime whistle sounded without incident. Titans 3-3 Raiders at halftime.

The Titans seemed slow out of the gate after halftime and the receiving problems continued. Unfortunately for Tennessee the run game had essentially dried up as well and so they weren't able to make any real progress. Palmer seemed to be really fired up after the break and he was finding gaps in the Titans zone defense with ease. Another short pass to Wells was broken for a big gain as the elusive speedster shrugged off a tackle to go into the endzone. Locker seemed to hit a rhythm again and found Kendall Wright, Cameron Jones and Dennis Pitta on consecutive plays for first downs and a decent run from CJ brought the Titans to a 1st and goal. Unfortunately the Titans could not convert and were left with a field goal attempt waiting at the end of the third quarter.

Walsh converted the easy points to start off a crazy final quarter. With only 13 points scored in the game so far the forth quarter would see 25 points scored and huge plays given out like candy. However the quarter did not start off well for Carson Palmer as rookie linebacker Jordan Johnson was left unblocked to drive the former Heismann Winner into the ground. The Titans failed to take advantage of good field position with a 3 and out and Jacoby Ford returned the punt into the Titans half. The huge boot of Sebastian Janikowski hit the post on a 59 yard field goal try and Tennessee, once again, had a great starting point. Locker was having to scramble a lot as the Raiders dialed up a lot of exotic blitz packages and he was eventually hit on a bootleg where he fumbled the ball. As fast as Locker was to try and dive on it Aaron Kampman was already there. The Raiders took possession as the game paused for the two minute warning.

The first play after the two minute warning was a running play that we will see all year, McFadden spun off a tackle from Casey and went 68 yards for a touchdown. The visiting Raiders fans went crazy, this was obviously the game over and a win for the silver and black, after all there were up 6-17 with no real time to mount a comeback. However the Titans had other ideas and the first play by Locker after the kick-off found a streaking Henderson for a 77 yard touchdown, and the 2 point conversion was good on a screen to Cameron Jones. All of a sudden the score was 14-17 and the Raiders didn't look so sure of themselves. The Titans kicked the ball deep into the endzone and then proceeded to blitz the kitchen sink at the Raiders for 3 downs, stopping McFadden and co from making even a yard of progress. However it still looked bleak for the Titans, they got the ball on just up from their own 25 yard mark with only 25 seconds left and no time-outs. Jake Locker only needed 10 seconds of that though as Kendall Wright ran a double move and found himself wide open. The ball fell securely into his hands and he flew up the field, just passing a diving Tyvon Branch around halfway, for a 74 yard touchdown and the lead, the first time since halftime that the Titans were ahead. 151 yards in 2 plays and the Raiders were left slack-jawed. The icing was put on the cake when Mason sacked Palmer for a forth time to run the clock out. The Titans win and there were a few seconds before the crowd seemed to realize they could cheer. Locker was superb on the day, with 8 of his 12 interceptions being drops, but no-one could have predicted that. Final score Titans 21-17 Raiders.

Game Notes
Both these teams have had success stopping the pass so far this season but have struggled against the run. The key to winning this game is taking away the middle of the field and forcing both quarterbacks to play outside.

THE TENNESSEE STANDARD

Titans Take Game Despite Early Struggles

By Daniel Smith

The Titans progress to 2-0-0 on the year with a decent win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. The game wasn't the most interesting affair, especially after the craziness of last week, but the Titans played well despite early struggles and Chris Johnson picked up his first 100 yard game of the year. The defense really hit back with 4 sacks and holding the Jaguars to only three field goals.

The Titans won the toss and again decided to defer and kick off first. The Titans defense showed that this was the right move as second year linebacker Zac Brown sacked Chad Henne on the first play, before safety Michael Griffin hit Maurice Jones-Drew for a loss. However Henne was determined not to be shown up and sent a third down pass to Justin Blackmon, the first of many of the night, that he converted with ease. 'Pocket Hercules' Jones-Drew really showed signs of struggling in this match as two more runs brought negligible gains. Henne, once again, dragged the Jaguars back from a third and long with a pass to rookie tight end Joseph Smith. However the defense proved too much in the end and the Jaguars had to punt. Chris Johnson showed a little bit more life than last week and took the ball 12 yards on a pitch right however on the next third down Jake Locker forced a pass over the middle straight into the hands of Paul Posluszny, who didn't even have to stretch to intercept the ball. MJD managed to break his longest run of the day with a 29 yard run off a broken tackle from Jordan Babineaux, it says volumes though about the day he had overall when he only managed 20 more yards on his 13 other carries on the day. That drive brought up a chip shot field goal for Josh Scobee. The Titans first quarter woes continued as a holding penalty left them just past their own 10 yard marker and punting back to the Jaguars to end the first quarter.

The second quarter started the same way that the first quarter ended. The Titans defense was resolute and rookie end Blaine Mason notched his first sack of the day to force a punt. However on the next drive Locker once again threw the ball straight into the hands of a linebacker, this time Daryl Smith. Munchak was visibly furious and could be seen throwing his headset at the quarterback as he left the pitch. The Jaguars drove well and would have picked up a touchdown on a Jones-Drew run but a holding call negated the points and Jacksonville settled for another field goal and a six point lead. It seemed that Munchak's tough love worked, after all who would want a Hall of Fame lineman angry at them, and Locker looked much better after coming back onto the field. He found Pitta and then Jones on consecutive throws for first downs and then bootlegged for a 13 yard gain. A nice play-action pass found Kendall Wright open in the endzone and the Titans took the lead with a 19 yard touchdown pass. A lead that they never gave up from then on.

Henne tried to raise a fightback, hitting Blackmon for another first down, but the Titans dropped Sedrick Ellis into coverage and right tackle Eben Britton seemed to forget about Blaine Mason entirely as he waltzed, unblocked, for his second sack of the night. The two minute warning sounded as the Titans got the ball back and Locker really set about finishing the game. He notched three first down passes in a row to three separate receivers and Jones showed why he has become management's favorite receiver with a superb one handed catch in traffic. With no time outs left Locker hit Pitta for a first and goal and then went no-huddle for a fast pass back to Pitta in the endzone. Halftime and the Jaguars looked in shock as the Titans took a 6-14 lead.

Despite some early flashes Johnson was struggling after the break and he was spelled by Jonathan Dwyer who exploded in pre-season. Locker found his two favorite targets on third downs again in Jones and Pitta. Dwyer ran well to set up a third and short and then a pass into the sure hands of PJ Taylor, who has shown a real drop in his burst quickness since college thanks to a nasty knee injury but has fit well as the Titans slot receiver mainly due to his ability to pick the ball out of coverage. Dwyer had two spectacular runs, one for 10 yards and a first down despite having Tyson Alualu hanging onto his back and the other for 20 yards straight up the middle for a 1st and goal. The Jaguars defense held the Titans to a field goal on the drive though. The rest of the quarter was really a wet towel. Chris Johnson and Jones-Drew seemed to trip over their own feet and the Titans and Jaguars traded terrible runs, decent coverage and forth downs until the quarter ended.

The forth quarter started with a bit more of a bang as Henne scrambled out of the pocket only to be met by the shoulder of Jordan Johnson for a sack. Henne then drove the Jaguars down the field throwing mostly to Blackmon who continued to haul balls in and find the difficult yards. Starting tight end Marcedes Lewis caught a screen but was hit at the line of scrimmage and left the game. He would not return but the Jaguars locker room has since confirmed he will be healthy enough to start the next game. Henne went to his favorite target of the night in Justin Blackmon with a screen on a third down just outside the redzone however Blackmon was hit hard by Griffin and the ball popped up before being snatched by cornerback Mike Jenkins for the turnover, the Titans first turnover on the year. Locker took the ball back and threw it up for Jones again for a first down. Some poor running from Locker left the Titans with a 3rd and long and Locker threw a screen pass to Chris Johnson in acres of space but CJ slipped and his foot went out of bounds, forcing a punt. Henne drove the Jaguars back up the field however they had to settle for a 52 yard field goal from Scobee to take the score upto 9-17 and within one possession however Locker found Pitta and Jones on first down passes after the two minute warning and the Titans kicked a field goal as time elapsed. Final score was Jaguars 9-20 Titans.
