Titans Win Without Locker As Time Expires

By Daniel Smith

The Titans recorded their 6th win of the season this week away against the Atlanta Falcons. It was a very close affair though and a Blair Walsh field goal as the game clock ran out finally tipped the Titans over the edge, marking a remarkable comeback as they were down 21-6 at one point. Titans quarterback Jake Locker was pulled from the game halfway through the second quarter after a dreadful showing in which he had as many interceptions as completions.

The real hero for the Titans was Jamie Harper though who broke the 200 yard mark rushing in a massive rebound from his struggles in the last game. Coach Mike Munchak said he could not have been prouder of the running back who has been a payday for the Titans since taking over from Chris Johnson in week 5. Munchak pulled Locker in the second quarter after he had thrown his third interception. Gradkowski played well in relief of Locker but Munchak said that the starting job is still Jake Locker's and the quarterback team will be working with the young signal caller to rebuild his confidence. In all fairness a lot of the problems were not Locker's fault, 2 of the 3 interceptions he threw were tipped and there were 9 drops from his receivers by the time he was pulled, however it was clear that the loss to Baltimore had rattled him.

The first quarter was indicative of the Titans play over the last few games as there defense was stout, forcing a quick punt from the Falcons and putting the ball into the hands of Harper who had taken it over 60 yards in his first two runs and placed the Titans squarely into the redzone but Locker could not capitalize and the Titans were forced to kick a field goal to take the lead. Matt Ryan was not getting a lot of help from his running game thanks to the Titans defense and so he pitched the ball to Julio Jones for 49 yards on a 3rd and 13 and took the Falcons down the field. However a Wimbley sack would stop the drive and the Falcons set up to take a field goal at the edge of Matt Bryant's range but a well timed stunt run from Blaine Mason made the offensive line false start and the Falcons punted the ball away. Locker tried to thread a pass through to Wright but the ball bounced up off his hands and into the hands of Asante Samuel, who was guarding Wright all day, and Samuel returned it for a touchdown to put the Falcons ahead. On the ensuing kick return rookie Jaleel Vargo broke his collarbone and the Titans have since announced that the rookie will be placed on injured reserve.

The second quarter began with a drop from Henderson on 3rd down but the Titans soon had the ball back from the first of a triplet of sacks from Blaine Mason on a 3rd down attempt from Matt Ryan forced a punt from the Falcons. Locker stepped up after the punt and launched the ball deep for Jones but he overthrew the receiver and Grimes was there to intercept. Mike Munchak showed his displeasure on the sideline by promptly kicking over an empty bench. The Falcons tried to run on a 3rd and short and when they didn't convert they tried for a 4th down conversion as they were just too far for a field goal and too short for an effective punt, but Matt Ryan's pass went incomplete. Locker then found Harper on a screen pass for 28 yards and the running back once again tried to put the team on his shoulders with a set of long first down runs, however all the Titans were able to glean from the drive was 3 points on a Blair Walsh field goal. Blaine Mason promptly hit Ryan on the first 3rd down opportunity again and gave the ball back to the Titans offense. Mason was incredible on the day and if he carries on at this pace he will break the all time single season sack record. Harper ran for another first down giving him an incredible 97 yards on his first 10 carries. The Titans attempted to pass to Harper on a 3rd and short but he was taken out before the ball could get near him, amazingly there were no flags thrown on the play and the Titans couldn't convert the 4th down attempt and the 2 minute warning sounded.

Matt Ryan had obviously tired Blaine Mason getting to him as he pitched the ball deep down the field and Julio Jones came up with it for a 59 yard touchdown pass. Locker tried to emulate Ryan with an arching downfield ball but it skidded off Taylor's fingertips and straight into Grimes' hands. Locker was pulled for the next drive and he sat, clearly dissolute, on the bench. Ryan showed Locker how it should have been done on the very next play though with a huge 76 yard bomb to Jones for another touchdown and the Titans were shellshocked. The Falcons had put up 14 points in a matter of seconds and the Titans were without a quarterback. Bruce Gradkowski stepped up and efficiently worked with Pitta and Jones to drive the team up the field before throwing a 39 yard dary to Wright for a touchdown as time expired on the half. The Titans had somehow clawed it back to one score.

The first play of the third quarter was a Harper run for a first down, smashing the 100 yard mark for the 3rd time in 4 games, an outstanding feat. Gradkowski found Taylor open for 35 yards and Harper ran another 9 yards on the next play to cement the Titans position in the Falcon's half. Gradkowksi passed to Pitta on a play action for a first and goal and then again for a touchdown. A successful two point rushing attempt by Dwyer brought the game to a tie and for the first time the offense were matching the play of the defense and the Titans looked unstoppable. The Falcons got the ball back but sure enough on 3rd down there was Blaine Mason to smash into the side of Matt Ryan and the usually calm quarterback was seen screaming at his offensive line on the sidelines. Gradkowski passed to Jones and Dwyer put in a decent run for 8 yards but the Titans were restricted to just a field goal to give them a 3 point lead.

The forth quarter was punctuated mainly by more interceptions from the Falcons defense as Asante Samuel picked off Gradkowksi on another attempted pass to Wright, and then intercepted Gradkowski again on the next Titans drive. This time the Falcons were able to scrape some points out of the drive and drew level with a field goal. When the Falcons got the ball back after a failed Titans drive Matt Ryan finally made some more progress through the air with a 25 yard play-action pass to tight end Schiancoe. However Derrick Morgan, the former first round pick, cut inside on the next 3rd down and did a passable impression of Blaine Mason with a hard sack straight into Ryan's side. The 2 minute warning rang out as Jamie Harper picked the Titans up and dragged them towards the win with 4 big yardage runs, eating up all of the Falcons time outs and leaving the Titans facing a 1st and goal with 12 seconds left and Blair Walsh kicked the chip shot over the posts in the dying seconds to give the Titans the win. Final score Atlanta Falcons 24 – 27 Tennessee Titans.

Around The League: Week 8

By Daniel Smith

It's time to look at the other stories that are making news around the league. This week the voting for the Pro-Bowl started and we are going to announce some surprise early leaders and some expected ever-presents. We won't release the full rosters just yet, we will just be highlighting certain players and positions.
  • For the AFC quarterback position Peyton Manning is solidly holding down the fort although the most votes early on have gone to Joe Flacco who is having an incredible season. Surprisingly the 3rd quarterback is Matt Schaub and there is no Tom Brady in site. On the NFC side Drew Brees and Michael Vick are the front-runners so far and second year player Robert Griffin III is placed in 3rd. All these players are having superb seasons so far.
  • Deandre Bolton, Saints middle linebacker, Blaine Mason, defensive end for the Titans, and Chiefs safety Brandon Johnson are all rookies that have made the list so far. In fact Blaine Mason can boast of the most votes so far amongst all players as his impact is felt across the league.
  • Every team in the AFC has at least one player currently representing them. The Ravens currently have 6 players on the roster, as do the Titans but the Chiefs are currently out in the lead with 7 players listed on the roster in it's current form. The Patriots, Jets, Browns and Bengals are all sitting on only a single player currently on the roster.
  • On the NFC roster the Buccaneers and the Rams have no players currently listed and there are 2 teams with more players than the whole of the NFC West combined. Both the Eagles and the Saints are currently fielding an amazing 9 players each on the roster.
  • The biggest surprises overall are the inclusion of Nate Burleson over Calvin Johnson Jr, Orlando Scandrick's inclusion for the Cowboys and the current choice of 4 Oakland Raiders players despite their poor record.
  • The players of the week this week are Drew Brees and Fred Jackson on the offensive side of the ball. And for the defensive both of the players that were awarded the award played in the same match against each other, rookie Blaine Mason and cornerback Asante Samuel for the AFC and NFC respectively.

Titans Announce Bye Week Changes

By Daniel Smith

The Titans have announced a couple of changes coming into their bye week. Mike Munchak said that the team wanted to focus particularly on the receivers and the quarterback play and that they would be running as many practices as possible with this in mind. After Jake Locker was pulled in the last game against the Falcons Munchak made it clear that he would spend the bye week working with the young quarterback to help rebuild his confidence.

As expected the Titans have played rookie receiver Jaleel Vargo on the injured reserve list due to a broken collarbone. The injury would take Vargo out of the remaining regular season games and the Titans felt that they needed to pick up more depth at wide receiver with Vargo unavailable to ensure that they made the playoffs. Vargo is said to be disappointed with the decision but the Titans front office have made it clear that they have been more than pleased with the rookie's play this season.

The Titans have also announced the signing of receiver Danny Amendola to take Vargo's roster spot. Amendola spent 2012 with the Panthers where he caught 53 balls for 655 yards and 2 touchdowns. However Amendola has suffered with injury troubles over his career and although he started all 16 games in 2012 for the Panthers he was injured in the offseason and was cut by the team. Amendola recovered from his injury and has spent the season so far working out to keep up to speed. Amendola has signed a 1 year deal worth around $700,000. The Titans reportedly brought both Amendola and James Jones in to try out but Amendola was a better fit for the scheme than Jones who remains a free agent.

The Titans have announced that they have re-opened the competition for the roster spots at receiver. Although they are happy with the progression of the receivers at the club the Titans have announced that they will have open competition for starting positions at receiver following a few weeks of spotty play from the wide-outs. There are a few other positions that may see some flux as well and we will have an updated depth chart for you by the game next week.

Titans Reveal New Receiver Positions

By Daniel Smith

After a week of practice and speculation the Tennessee Titans have announced the results of their wide-out reshuffle. Whilst the two starting spots currently remain the same the coaching staff felt that the depth behind those spots needed to be shaken up. Hopefully this will provide Jake Locker with some improved receiver play, and coach Mike Munchak has said that none of these positions are fixed in stone. In other words if you don't produce you don't start.

The only real change has been with the addition of Danny Amendola for the injured Jaleel Vargo. The Titans felt the Amendola was a more natural fit at slot than rookie PJ Taylor and so they have placed PJ Taylor at the 4th receiver position and Amendola has taken his place in the slot. There were rumblings about Amendola taking the starting spot from Kendall Wright but the speedy receiver fought Amendola off in rigorous training sessions.

This change means that Devery Henderson has moved from 4th receiver to 5th receiver and will primarily feature as injury relief and a special teams player. The Titans felt that Henderson showed real burst on kick returns in practice and that having an experienced pair of hands will limit any fumbles or mistakes costing the Titans valuable field position. The Titans only ever ask their special teams players to be consistent and they feel that Henderson provides the most consistency next to Mariani on kick returns. However they expect to rotate Henderson and Amendola behind Mariani on punt returns, this is because Amendola has more experience in the punt game.
