Just before the draft, Tampa trades the #2 pick to Seattle for DT Alan Branch and Seattle's 3rd round pick.
When asked about the trade, a Tampa insider said the Buccaneers weren't sold on any guy as a solid #2 pick. So they opted to grab a DT they liked in Branch and save themselves some money, as well as pick up a draft pick to add depth to the roster.
Tampa Draft Picks
Round 1, Pick 11- The Buccaneers traded out of this pick, sending the pick to the Lions who took DT Monte Parker. Tampa got Detroits' 1st round pick in 2014 and a late round pick.
Round 1, Pick 26- Colorado CB Joseph Knight OVR 79- Knight is expected to play Nickelback
Trey Wingo- Joseph Knight was about the only one who didn't know if he would go first round #nojinx
Round 1, Pick 27- Tampa trades the pick to the Bears for Chicago's 1st round pick in 2014 and a late rounder. The Bears took C Aaron Smith
Round 1, Pick 29- Nebraska WR Dominique Owens OVR 74- Owens could definitely see some playing time, but isn't expected to start immediately.
Skip Bayless- Like everyone else, I knew Dominique Owens would go in the first round. My question: will he live up to the hype?
Round 2, Pick 8- Iowa State DT DaRick White OVR 75- The Buccaneers needed depth at Defensive Tackle and really liked what they saw when they scouted White (PRC B, BSH B, PWR B)
Skip Bayless- Buccaneers' GM trying to be in the film Dumb, Dumber & Dumbest? TERRIBLE pick taking D. White here.
Round 2, Pick 11- Minnesota RE Darryl Williams OVR 71- Tampa needed depth at DE and they liked ACC A, BSH B, FMV B, POW B
Chris Mortensen- Buccaneers go with a defense in Round 2.
Round 3, Pick 32- Boise State RE T.J. Blake OVR 84- Tampa wanted depth at DE, but it looks like they found a sleeper in Blake. Blake has a legitimate shot to start. He will challenge Michael Bennett and Adrian Clayborn in training camp.
Adam Schefter- Buccaneers select T. Blake here in the 3rd round # freefall
Round 6, Pick 14- Kentucky WR Andrew Charles OVR 69- Tampa used this late round pick to add depth at WR.
Round 6, Pick 26- Wisconsin CB Tajh Farrow OVR 70- Farrow gives the Buccaneers a developmental guy at CB with some solid skills to start.
Scott Wright- Buccaneers should be thanking teams for passing on T. Farrow so he could fall to them.
Round 7, Pick 5- FAU WR Blake Allen OVR 63- The Buccaneers took a flier on Allen and hope he will show something in training camp.
Mark Schlereth- Like the value of Blake Allen at this point
Round 7, Pick 20- West Virginia WR Joseph Morrison OVR 68- Another developmental WR.
Todd McShay- Anything can happen in a player's career, but based off J. Morrison's game tape, this pick makes no sense to me.
Questionable Selection- Joseph Morrison had a decent college career at West Virginia, but the Buccaneers passed up much better players to take this wide receiver.
Round 7, Pick 32- SW Miss St JJ Broadway OVR 65- The Buccaneers needed a kicker and thought they'd give Broadway a chance.
Skip Bayless- Everyone's going to start calling Buccaneers GM a genius, but couldn't they've got JJ Broadway earlier?
Draft Steal- The Buccaneers organization could not be happier with the draft selection of kicker JJ Broadway from SW Miss St.
The trades freed up some cap room, so the Buccaneers have almost $11M in Cap Room. Which is good as they will need to get a lot of guys to fill their 53 man roster.
