Re: Flying High Again | Philadelphia Eagles

Foles Rallies Eagles To Opening Day Win

Reporter: Coach, who's starting next week?

Chip Kelly: What's the highest grade you finished? Are you taking those notes in crayon?

Robert Griffin III showed no ill affects from last season’s playoff injury, but he could not prevent the Philadelphia Eagles’ Chip Kelly era from kicking off with a victory. That victory, however, was in doubt much of the way. RGIII completed 14 of his 17 pass attempts (a whopping 82%), but all three of the incomplete passes came on third down and 7 sacks (3 by first-year Eagle Connor Barwin) of a happy-footed Griffin by the Philadelphia defense wrecked multiple drives.
Deep into the third quarter, the game was still a defensive struggle with Washington holding a 10-3 lead on a 9 yard run by Griffin in the waning moments of the first half. Michael Vick had reached 10-of-23, and Kelly decided it was time to change horses at QB. In his first two series, Nick Foles went 7-of-9 and directed two touchdown drives, both scores being 1 yard plunges by LeSean McCoy, the latter coming with only 4:44 to go a play after James Casey was denied a touchdown be being shoved out of bounds. The ensuing Redskins possession ended with a turnover on downs at the Philadelphia 45 on a sack by Isaac Sopoaga, and the Eagles were then able to run out the clock.

Re: Flying High Again | Philadelphia Eagles

Bears Sign Barrett Ruud

The Chicago Bears have filled the roster spot vacated by placing rookie middle linebacker Jon Bostic on injured reserve with the signing of Barrett Ruud to a 1 year contract. Former Bronco D.J. Williams will be taking Bostics' place in the starting lineup, but with Williams already having the role of Lance Briggs' backup, Ruud can be expected to get a significant number of snaps.

How Many Picks Will Butt Fumble Throw This Week?

Probably none. Mark Sanchez has been benched following his 5-INT implosion against the Ravens, and Geno Smith will be getting the Week 2 start vs. the Bills. That sets up an interesting matchup of Smith versus E.J. Manuel, the QB selected ahead of him last April. Manuel had a better opening day than most of the veteran QB's around the league.

Only A Team With Adrian Peterson Could Survive This

Christian Ponder might be quaking at the thought of going through the next month and a half with his staring tackles sidelined, but he should relax. All he needs to do is hand the ball off All Day.

Game Notes
In a 20-6 loss at Denver last week, the Raiders knocked Montee Ball out of the game, but then gave up 133 yards to Ronnie Hillman. No disrespect, but Ronnie Hillman is no LeSean McCoy and Philly's o-line is superior to Denver's. That should bode well for the Eagles in this matchup of two of last year's 4-12 teams. Then again, four years ago the 11-5 Eagles lost to the 5-11 Raiders.

Re: Flying High Again | Philadelphia Eagles

Williams Pulls Eagles Out Of Black Hole

Chip Kelly: Thank God that was the Raiders out there, or we would have been toast.

Reporter: What about Jacksonville, coach?

Chip Kelly: Oh, yeah. Well, that still leaves 29 teams that would have beat us today.

Given the clusterforniction that was last year's Philadelphia Eagles defense, it’s hard to imagine using the “defense wins championships” adage in connection with the Iggles. But it took two defensive touchdowns (and Sebastian Janikowski missing a field goal) for Philly to beat the Oakland Raiders 20-14 in overtime. Philadelphia’s sputtering offense, which used all three of its quarterbacks, was outgained by Oakland 362 yards to 229 and the Raiders had the ball for more than 12 minutes longer than did the Eagles. The Raiders, however, were equally inept at finding the end zone, and the Philly defense logged a stretch, going back to last week’s second half, of five consecutive quarters without allowing a touchdown.

With just 1 second left in the first half and with the Eagles up 7-3, Janikowski hit the left upright on a 38 yard attempt. He had already opened the scoring with a booming 58-yarder in the first quarter, and he would later hit from 50 for the only score of the third. Typical Sea Bass.

0-for-2 in the first series of the second half made Nick Foles 8-of-21, and Chip Kelly broke out the hook to let Matt Barkly take his first NFL regular season snap in his home state. Barkley, though, was also deemed ineffective at 4/10. The score was still 7-6 when, with the game clock down to 4:53, rookie Bennie Logan sacked Matt Flynn and forced a fumble. Isaac Sopoaga gathered up the loose ball and lumbered 50 yards to the house (how do you not catch Sopo in 50 yards?!). With an exchange of punts, the Raiders got the ball two plays after the two minute warning, and they reached a 4th and 2 at the 7 with the clock running under 30 seconds. Matt Flynn found Josh Cribbs for a first and goal at the 4, and Oakland used its last time out at 0:19. After an incomplete pass intended for Cribbs, Flynn hit Jacoby Ford for what would have been a go-ahead (and probably game-winning) touchdown had Janikowski made that 38-yarder. As it was, the Raiders were going to need a two point conversion to force overtime. A false start pushed them back 5 yards, but the Flynn-to-Ford connection still worked again and the score was tied at 14. On the first play after the kickoff, Michael Vick hit Zach Ertz with a 63 yard bomb but the play left no time on the clock.

The Eagles won the OT coin toss and DeSean Jackson returned the kickoff out to the 36. A facemask flag against Usama Young on Arrelious Benn spared them from a three and out, but they only netted 3 yards on the next three plays. With the Raiders also looking at a three and out, Flynn forced a pass that was picked off by Cary Williams, who had 20 yards of open field in front of him, to give Philly the win. Sudden death indeed.

Surprise stat of the game: Matt Flynn’s 90 rushing yards on 8 attempts. Who knew?
