Buying Insurance and Defining the Importance of a Backup QB in the NFL

By BJ Kissel

USA TODAY Sports

A lot of people wouldn't say the backup quarterback position is one of the five or six most important positions on a football field, that is, until you're having to play your backup quarterback. Then it becomes really important.

There's no denying that your starting quarterback is the most important position on your team, but how much focus you put on that backup spot could go a long way in determining how competitive you are if you're unfortunate enough to lose your starter.

There's a couple of different ways you can approach the backup quarterback position.

A lot depends on how old your starter is and what the situation is with your No. 1 guy. But to put it simply, you can bring in a veteran journeyman who you know has experience and you can feel comfortable about what you're going to get from him, or you can have a young, developing player ready to step in and get his opportunity.

There are a few teams out there that are potential playoff teams that are gambling by not carrying a backup quarterback at all.

Tampa Bay, Carolina and Washington are all going without a backup QB.

What makes this even more confusing is that each of these teams has room under the salary cap, and there are a variety of options out there who could provide valuable insurance.

Top Free Agent Quarterbacks Available

Donovan McNabb*
Chad Henne
Derek Anderson
Tavaris Jackson*
Matt Moore
John Skelton
Troy Smith*
Seneca Wallace*
Josh Johnson*

*mobile QB's similar (less talented, but similar) to what Tampa, Carolina and Washington look for.

Re: Bears Dynasty- Madden 13

I did a little more digging and found out the Cam Newton has been injured and is just now returning. The Panthers have pass yards for the two games he missed, but it doesn't show who was doing the passing. I checked the punter and kicker player cards as well as team stats and game stats. I had thought that the game had basically made those three invulnerable by taking away their backups, but I guess not. Of course, I'm playing with injuries at like 75, and I've had more injuries this season than ever before.

Atlanta joins the 1 QB club with Louis Glover getting an injury that puts him out 22 weeks. They have undrafted QB Domanick Davis as their QB now.

Week 5: Bye Week

Bears Pound Packers
Week 6: Packers (0-4) @ Bears (4-0)

The Packers are struggling this season, they look hopeless at 0-4 coming into this one. The Bears on the other hand look nearly invincible with QB Jay Cutler having the best year of his career.

The Bears dominate in this one jumping to a 14-0 lead at the half.

CHI 14 GB 0 at the half

They add another 14 unanswered points in the 3rd, to increase their lead to 4 TDs.

CHI 28 GB 0 in the 3rd

The Packers finally start to put some points on the board in the 4th with a long score to WR Steve Smith and a FG, but the Packers defense can't stop the Bears offense. Chicago answers Green Bays 10 points with 14 of their own.

CHI 42 GB 10 Final

Seahawks Slow, But Can't Stop Bears
Week #7: Bears (5-0) @ Seahawks (4-1)

Both teams are leading their divisions and everyone thought this would be a great game. It wasn't.

The Seahawks managed to slow QB Jay Cutler (he had only 1/2 the yards that he did last week) but they couldn't stop him. Whereas, the Bears defense certainly shut down Russell Wilson, who had less than 100yds passing.

This one was still relatively close in the first half with the Bears only leading by one TD.

CHI 14 SEA 7 at the half

The wheels definitely fell off the bus for Seattle in the 2nd half.

The Bears added 16 unanswered points (2 TD's and a Safety) to keep this one out of reach.

CHI 30 SEA 7 Final

Statistics

CHI QB Jay Cutler 11/19 for 264yds, 3 TDs
SEA QB Russell Wilson 4/9 for 78yds TD

CHI HB Darren McFadden 19 runs for 107yds TD, fumble

SEA WR Ted Ginn Jr. 1 catch for 5yds TD

CHI SS Edward Robinson 3 tackles, 3 TFL, 3 Sacks
CHI DE Darryl Tapp 3 tackles, 3 TFL, Sack, Safety
CHI MLB Tate Green 2 tackles, TFL, Sack
SEA MLB James Laurinaitis 4 tackles, TFL

Bears Coral Rams
Week #8: Rams (1-5) @ Bears (6-0)

St. Louis contains the Bears run game, so QB Jay Cutler cuts them to pieces through the air.

The Bears would of ran away with this one, except the Rams had the Bears run game dialed in. They allowed only 26 total yards, knocked out Darren McFadden (who is starting for the injured Forte) and forced 2 fumbles.

Even with that, the Bears jumped to an 11pt lead at the half.

STL 3 CHI 14 at the half

The Rams came back with a long TD and 2pt conversion to close the gap to a mere FG. That is as close as they would get.

The Bears respond with a TD and then go crazy in the 4th, outscoring the Rams 21-3.

STL 14 CHI 42 Final

Statistics

CHI QB Jay Cutler 17/25 for 372yds 6 TDs
STL QB Sam Bradford 8/14 for 126yds TD

STL HB Steven Jackson 20 runs for 53yds, fumble
CHI HB Darren McFadden 4 runs for 9yds, fumble- injured and knocked out of the game
CHI HB Steve Slaton 8 runs for 17yds, fumble

CHI TE Brandon Boss 6 catches for 100yds, 4 TDs
STL WR Brad Smith 5 catches for 98yds TD
CHI WR Walker Stream 4 catches for 99yds
CHI WR Emmitt Tovar 3 catches for 126yds TD
CHI WR Darius Heyward-Bey 2 catches for 41yds TD

CHI SS Edward Robinson 4 tackles, TFL, Sack, forced fumble
CHI DE Julius Peppers 2 tackles, 2 TFL, Sack, forced fumble
STL CB Janoris Jenkins 5 tackles
STL OLB Jo-Lohn Dunbar 3 tackles, forced fumble
STL MLB Chase Blackburn 2 tackles, forced fumble

With the injury to McFadden and not knowing if Forte will be ready, the Bears sign former Colts HB Donald Brown.

Colts Bring Cutler Down To Earth, But Fall Apart In 4th
Week #9: Bears (7-0) @ Colts (6-1)

Jay Cutler has been nothing short of spectacular all season, at least up until this game. The Colts force Cutler into three turnovers and almost win this one.

The Colts score first with a long TD to Mohamed Massaquoi.

IND 7 CHI 0 in the 1st

The Bears respond with a TD run by Matt Forte.

IND 7 CHI 7 in the first

The Colts add another TD, this one coming from WR Mike Williams.

IND 14 CHI 7 in the 2nd

The Bears are forced to settle for a FG

IND 14 CHI 10 in the 2nd

SS Edward Robinson forces a fumble when QB Andrew Luck tries to scramble for a first down.

Chicago turns it into points when QB Jay Cutler hits WR Emmitt Tovar.

IND 14 CHI 17 at the half

Chicago starts with the ball, but Cutler gives it to the Colts with a bad pass seemingly right to FS Antoine Bethea.

The Colts keep getting driven back by the Bears defense and on 3rd and long, FS Jalen Thomas gets the sack in the endzone for the Safety.

IND 14 CHI 19 in the 3rd

The Bears drive the field after the free kick and end the drive with another score by Matt Forte.

IND 14 CHI 26 in the 3rd

The Colts are forced to punt, but CB Derek Cox gets the ball back for them when he intercepts Cutler.

QB Andrew Luck hits Mohamed Massaquoi for another TD.

IND 21 CHI 26 in the 4th

Matt Forte can't do anything on the ground and Cutler looks flustered as he overthrows a wide open Devin Hester. Bears punt. The Colts settle for a FG to close the gap to 2 pts.

IND 24 CHI 26 in the 4th

The Colts go for the onside kick but they can't get it. The Bears add a TD when Cutler hits Brandon Boss over the middle and Boss weaves his way through 3 defenders to make it in the end zone.

IND 24 CHI 33 in the 4th

CB Charles Tillman picks off Andrew Luck to kill a drive by the Colts. FS Antoine Bethea returns the favor intercepting Cutler on a pass to the end zone. Bethea is tackled at the 2yd line. Not a good place to start with the ball. A point that is emphasized when SS Edward Robinson comes off the edge unblocked, jumps the HB and sacks Andrew Luck for the 2nd Safety of the game.

IND 24 CHI 35 Final

Statistics

CHI QB Jay Cutler 12/22 for 272yds 2 TDs, 3 Ints
IND QB Andrew Luck 16/22 for 315yds 3 TDs, Int

CHI HB Matt Forte 15 runs for 76yds 2 TDs
IND QB Andrew Luck 1 run for 6yds, fumble
IND HB Algernon Nelson 8 runs for -8yds (Nelson will lose his job in part because of his play in this one.)

IND WR Mohamed Massaquoi 4 catches for 110yds 2 TDs
CHI WR Walker Stream 4 catches for 119yds
CHI WR Emmitt Tovar 3 catches for 72yds TD
CHI TE Brandon Boss 3 catches for 43yds TD
IND WR Roy Williams 3 catches for 90yds

CHI CB Charles Tillman 2 tackles, TFL, Int
IND OLB Bryan Thomas tackle, TFL, Sack
IND FS Antoine Bethea 7 tackles, TFL, 2 Ints
