About Ohio State
Last year Ohio State pulled off a 35-28 victory over California in Columbus. Braxton Miller had a huge game with 249 passing yards and four touchdown passes to add to it. Despite fighting hard for 56 minutes, a 72-yard pass from Miller to his favorite target Devin Smith clinched an Ohio State win in what was a classic game. Miller is considered a frontrunner for the Heisman trophy, and Devin Smith has been his top target again this year.

Re: Bear Territory | Cal Golden Bears [NCAA '14]

Devin Smith drops a game tying TD Pass in OT.

Golden Bears Get Revenge; Upset Top Ranked Buckeyes
Berkeley, CA | Last year Ohio State beat California on a pass from Braxton Miller to Devin Smith, so it would only be right for California to win off of a dropped pass from Miller to Smith right? Well, maybe. But that's what happened in the sixth overtime stanza in Berkeley today.

The Golden Bears forced the Buckeyes into a 4th-and-22 situation after two huge defensive sacks on Heisman candidate Braxton Miller, and Miller looked to his favorite target Smith who had gotten behind the coverage on what would be the last play of the game. The Buckeyes trailed 61-55 at that point and needed either a first down or a touchdown to keep the game going, but as pictured above Devin Smith fumbled the catch and it dropped helplessly to the ground.

The Golden Bears' third win of the season has matched their win total from all of last season and head coach Sonny Spikes was very candid about the win.

"We know that Ohio State has one of the best programs in the nation. To have them on our turf and beat them is.. The greatest accomplishment of my life and the same goes for a lot of young men in our locker room! This is just bittersweet, especially for the young men who lost to these same guys last year."

Despite the loss, Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller did absolutely nothing to hurt his Heisman stock as he accounted for 374 yards and six touchdowns.

The Golden Bears have an extended celebration period as they head into a bye week before their first road game of the season, against their conference foe, the Oregon Ducks at the Autzen Zoo in Eugene, OR.

Carlos Hyde stampedes into the endzone on OSU's first play in the third overtime stanza.

Braxton Miller goes 35 yards untouched late in the third to give the Buckeyes the lead.

Re: Bear Territory | Cal Golden Bears [NCAA '14]

Golden Bears Recruiting Update

Cal's top target Jamie Bowman (Florence-Graham, CA/Fremont) lays a bone jarring hit on an opposing quarterback.

With 25 scholarships to use and only one position that needs filling for next season, the Golden Bears have been splurging to build their sorest spots. For instance, the Bears have seven freshman offensive linemen this year, but Head Coach Sonny Spikes isn't impressed with the talent he has, so he's been actively recruiting the top offensive linemen in the area.

His top target however, is Jamie Bowman out of Florence-Graham, CA. Bowman is a lean, mean, hitting machine and has skills to match. This young man has a mixture of safety and corner skills (97 press) and has a very good chance to receive considerable playing time early on. He has been tight-lipped about his recruitment, but Cal is said to be trailing Stanford and USC for the young man's services. Bowman hasn't scheduled an official visit to Berkeley, but has visited unofficially a few times and appears to like the campus. Coach Spikes will have to pull a rabbit out of his hat to beat the better known schools for Bowman's services, but the fact that Bowman still has the Bears high on his list speaks high praise for California's recruiting strategy.

Second on Cal's big board is defensive end Paris Walker (Willowbrook, CA/Centennial). Walker is not only a celebrity in high school, but hangs out with celebrity and Centennial alum Kendrick Lamar regularly. Walker has stated previously that he intends to stay close to home, which makes sense as to why his final three teams are USC, UCLA, and California in that order. Walker seems intent to stay in the Los Angeles area, so the Golden Bears are having a challenge convincing Walker to come up north. Walker is a speed rusher with amazing power moves and great finishing ability when he makes a tackle.

The rest of the Bears' list are equipped with young, high character players, but if Sonny Spikes had a third favorite recruit it would definitely be Pat Tate (Union City, CA/Logan). The athlete is a coaches dream and reminds some of Jake Locker at QB. Tate can definitely run, and has a big arm, but accuracy will be his biggest problem early on.

Paris Walker (Willowbrook, CA/Centennial) shows his true power as he throws the left tackle to the side in pursuit of the quarterback.

About This Game
Cal's first road game of the year is in the volatile Autzen Stadium in Eugene, OR. Oregon shamed Cal last year 59-17 in what was their 10th win of the season (in 10 games). The Ducks had their way through the air as Marcus Mariota calmly passed for 377 yards and six touchdowns. All-American De'Anthony Thomas had 101 receiving yards in the game last year but didn't get off to a productive game on the ground. This is Zach Kline's first start on the road and what worse of a place to have it in, Autzen Stadium ranks #18 in Toughest Places to Play.

Herbstreit's Pick: Oregon
