Washington was pretty tough, Cyler Miles is going to give me trouble for the next few years, that guy isn't a slouch. The rest of the schedule is also pretty tough, should be some good games in there.

Re: Bear Territory | Cal Golden Bears [NCAA '14]

Zach Kline scoring one of his two touchdowns on the day

Come From Behind Kline Does It Again

Berkeley, CA | Zach Kline is defying common knowledge. Freshman quarterbacks are supposed to have weak psyche's and are supposed to wilt in crunch time. When your team has mustered 14 points the entire game and you're down 10 with 6 minutes to go, a freshman isn't expected to bring his team back.

But that is the legend of "come from behind Kline." This quarterback has brought his team to victory while trailing in the fourth quarter three times thus far, and this game against Arizona may have been some of his best work.

With 6 minutes left and the offense being able to muster absolutely nothing, Kline took the Golden Bears down the field twice to steal a win over Arizona who had upset on their mind.

California couldn't stop Arizona early. Ka'Deem Carey ran like a man possessed until he got injured for the game late in the third with a foot injury. His injury correlates well with Cal's come from behind victory. The Golden Bears played like they had no wind in their sails and when the fourth quarter finally rolled around, Kirk Herbstreit thought the Bears were done, defeated.

Once Zach Kline crossed the endzone line with 1:03 left to put his team ahead (on a powerful run indeed) the game was clinched, and so was Kline's fame.

The Golden Bears are lucky he's only a freshman.

But next weekend this freshman has to come back down to Earth and do what no one has done so far this year; Beat USC.

In Other News
Cal received two more commitments after this game, pushing their season total to six commitments thus far.

Guard Andrew Salyer who took his official visit to watch the game this weekend made sure he signed his letter of intent before heading back home to Compton, CA. The four star guard ranks as the #12 guard in this high school class, and Salyer's a special one with a great knack for run blocking. California beat out USC, Washington, Fresno State, and UCLA for Salyer's signature. At 6'1" 305 pounds, Salyer is a strong kid with good acceleration. His team was based around the Wing T in high school, so he comes in very raw in terms of protecting the pass.

Martin O'Neal from Moberly, MO ranks as the 15th best quarterback prospect in the nation. O'Neal didn't play against the best talent in Missouri, and while he's being hailed as a dual-threat QB, the Golden Bears want him to focus more on becoming a better passer. O'Neal's future is virtually in his own hands, he has absolutely no chance to challenge Zach Kline in the near future for starting snaps, but how he progresses and where he's at when Kline leaves will be very important. The four star prospect is a quarterback in a shooting guard's body standing at 6'5" 235 lbs.

Bryce Treggs fumbles late in the third quarter after coming across the middle.

Brendan Bigelow's early fourth quarter touchdown catch put the Golden Bears within a field goal of victory.

Nice comeback win, whether you get a shot to play for the Pac-12 title, or not. Been a great season for you and might see a BCS Berth if you can keep on winning.

About This Game
There's a chance this may not be the last time these two teams play each other. USC is on fire this year winning their first 8 games, led by a two headed rushing attack Silas Redd and DJ Morgan. Add Marqise Lee into that mix, and USC may possibly have one of the most dynamic offenses in the nation. Cody Kessler will be behind center for the Trojans this week, and the sophomore is about as accurate a quarterback as you will see. USC also has a top 5 defense, and will likely give Cal trouble this weekend.

Herbstreit's Pick: USC

Re: Bear Territory | Cal Golden Bears [NCAA '14]

This image is quite symbolic of Cal's offense and USC's defense today

Missing: Cal's Offense. USC Continues Unbeaten Season

Berkeley, CA | Was the Heisman love was a bit too much for Zach Kline? Maybe. Cal's quarterback looked out of place this week as he led his Golden Bears to a whopping three points. Not the three points the Bears needed in crunch time to secure a win, but three points total.

Whether it was USC's exotic blitz schemes, a bit too much celebrating the Heisman love, or just Kline's streak of luck ending, he just looked out of place. But despite all the negative publicity, he may have still outperformed Cody Kessler from USC, but that isn't saying much.

After an offensive outburst in last week's fourth quarter against Arizona, Cal's offense couldn't muster anything. Brendan Bigelow struggled to get past the line of scrimmage, Kline missed wide open guys repeatedly, and the line was dominated throughout.

But Cal's defense came to play. A defense statistically regarded as one of the worst in the nation, kept one of the most talented offenses bottled up for four quarters. Besides a 51 yard bomb caught by Victor Blackwell, Cal had effectively shut down the Trojans and may have provided the blueprint to beat them. All-American Marqise Lee had a very pedestrian game, as the Golden Bears swarmed to him every time he caught the ball and forced him to a few drops with big hits from safety Avery Sebastian.

But despite the strong defensive play, Cal just couldn't put up enough points.

Look for an offensive explosion next week though as Cal travels to Boulder, CO to play one of the worst defensive units in the Pac-12, the Colorado Buffaloes.

In Other News
Despite the horrendous play of the Golden Bears this week, Cal managed to secure a commitment from the #8 tight end in the nation, Mike Odom. Odom, from Manhattan Beach, CA, projects more as a blocking tight end than a pass catcher. Odom has some speed, and the courage to catch passes over the middle in traffic, but his hands in terms of catching aren't very reliable. While he's not offensive lineman talented at pass protection, he is good enough to give Zach Kline an extra second to scan the defense or supply a key block in the running game. Odom picked Cal over other offers from Oregon State and Fresno State.

Anthony Brown jumps in front of a Zach Kline pass to end what looked to be a promising drive.

Victor Blackwell drags defenders into the endzone for the only touchdown of the game.
