Re: BEEP! BEEP! | UTSA Roadrunners

Runners Gut One Out Over Owls, 27-24

In order to improve to 2-1 in Conference USA play with a 27-24 victory over the visiting Rice Owls, Larry Coker and his UTSA Roadrunners had to pass a few gut checks.

Taking a 7-0 lead in the opening series on Tucker Carter’s 7 yard toss to Marcellus Mack, the Runners never trailed, but Rice was never too far off. After falling behind 17-7 in the second quarter, the Owls ended the first half with a field goal to get back within a touchdown. UTSA got those three points back in the third quarter, but Rice responded with a touchdown drive, cutting the Runners’ advantage to 20-17. With less than 6 minutes left in the game, the Roadrunners were looking at a 4th and goal with the nose of the football inches away from the goal line. Coker wanted a 10 point lead, not a precarious 6 point one, and he got it when Carter burrowed in with his second touchdown sneak. The Owls fought back with a touchdown drive that took less than a minute, and kick away under the reasonable hope that the would get the ball back in time for another scoring drive. The next UTSA series reached a 4th and inches at the Roadrunner 39, and Coker made what could have been a controversial decision to go for it. Failure could have meant overtime, or worse. Explaining his decision after the game, Coker said, “If we were going to lose, I wanted it to be because we tried everything we could to keep the ball away from them, not because we punted and couldn’t get a stop. I was more afraid of giving them the ball back than I was of not making that first down.” Carter converted with a sneak, but not two plays later the Runners were in a 3rd and 13. There was still a chance UTSA would have to punt, but Carter hit Brandon Freeman for a gain of 23 to the Rice 40, and the Owls burned their second time out with 1:58 to go. David Glasco went for 8 yards, then fullback Nate Shaw converted the second and 2, leaving the Owls powerless to prevent the draining of the clock.

Injury note: No. 2 wideout Earon Holmes was carted off the field in the game-opening possession. It was later learned that Holmes had suffered a ruptured disk, ending his junior season.

Marcellus Mack capped the opening series with a 7 yard TD grab.

Double trouble.

Brandon Freeman’s 23 yard catch on 3rd and 13 helped UTSA run out the clock.

Some tough losses but nothing like playing Rice to get you back on track.

Haha yeah but we still might have lost if we hadn't been able to run out the lock.

So far I'd say we've lost the games we were really supposed to and nobe of the wins have been shockers.

Runners Land First 3-Star Recruit For Class Of '14

Palestine linebacker Michael Jones is a future Roadrunner.

The University of Texas at San Antonio has finally received its first three-star commitment for the 2104 recruiting class. Hailing from Adrian Peterson's hometown and alma mater (Palestine, TX), outside linebacker Michael Jones (6'-5", 228 lbs.) verbally committed to the Roadrunners Saturday night after UTSA's 27-24 victory over Rice. Johnson is ranked as the #31 OLB in the country by Rivals.com. With starting OLB Steven Kurfehs playing out his senior season this year, Johnson will get to compete for a starting job as a true freshman against Jens Jeters and Tank O'Neal in 2014. Jeters will be a Junior and O'Neal is a freshman who has yet to burn his red shirt.

"That was one of the main things," Johnson said in reference to the opportunity to start early. "I think I can make an impact right away."

UTSA's only other commit to date is 1-star DT Jesse Berry (6'-2'/302) of Monahans.

Re: BEEP! BEEP! | UTSA Roadrunners

Runners And I-35 Rival Are Battling For Lockhart QB

Lockhart QB Travis Robinson has cut his list to two teams, including UTSA.

Dual-threat QB Travis Robinson (6'-4", 217 lbs.) of the Lockhart Lions has eliminated SMU, Houston and Baylor from the competition for his services, leaving two final teams to battle it out. Those teams are UTSA and rival Texas St., and things are virtually neck and neck. Robinson leads the Lions in rushing as well as passing and has guided his team to an undfeated record so far. Rivals.com has him listed as the #36 QB in the country, and Larry Coker covets him as his starting QB for 2015. Junior Tucker Carter stands to remain the starter for the 2014 season, setting up the opportunity for a successor to start as a redshirt freshman the following year. Texas St. starter Tyler Arnt is a senior, as is one of his backups, leaving current redshirt freshman Jordan Moore as the current heir apparent. Robinson could get an opportunity to start for the Bobcats next season, but he'd have to win the job. At UTSA, he'd be virtually assured of starting after redshirting in 2014.

"I don't mind sitting out a year and getting accustomed to things. But I do plan on being a four-year starter," Robinson said with an air of confidence. San Marcos is a little closer to Lockhart than San Antonio is, but that's not a factor according to Robinson. "San Marcos got nothin' on San Antonio. And we're talking C-USA versus Sun Belt. Those things give UTSA a little bit of an edge."

Coker hopes that little edge will be enough to sway Robinson UTSA's way. "It would be huge for us to get a commit of his caliber at QB. We're one of 126 schools in the FBS, in just our third year of football, and we have a shot at one of the top 40 QB's in the country. That could open some doors for us."
