With Lockhart quarterback Travis Robinson remaining uncommitted after taking his official visit to UTSA and scheduled to be the guest of Texas St. next week, The Roadrunners have found a Plan B. Or rather, it found them. El Paso Austin Panthers head coach Rodney Ryan has contacted offensive coordinator Kevin Brown to tell him that his quarterback, Reggie Tate, wants to take an official visit to San Antonio for the Runners' season finale against Louisiana Tech. The news, although welcome, came from out of the blue. Tate, the son of a 1st Armored Division tank commander stationed at Fort Bliss, has offers from (in the order he ranks the schools) aTm, Texas, TCU, Oklahoma, LSU, Minnesota, Kansas St. and SMU. "Of course we knew about him," Brown said. "He's an in-state prospect and the #20 QB in the country. We didn't think we had a prayer considering who's offered him, though." Well, apparently Tate is offering UTSA and amazingly he's got the Roadrunners at the top of his list, and by a wide margin. "Coach Bryan said Reggie sees us as 'an intriguing opportunity'. I'm intrigued, too." The approach has been well-received and Tate will be in the Alamodome when the Runners take on the Bulldogs.
Coming out of a bye week, all the Roadrunners need for bowl eligibility is a road win against the Mean Green, which only has wins against Idaho and Tulane.
Mean Green Makes Runners Work For Bowl Eligibility
In just the third year of their football existence, and the first in which the NCAA would allow them to play in a bowl game, the 6-5 Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners are now projected to take on the Ragin’ Cajuns of Louisiana-Lafayette (6-4) in the Beef O’Brady’s Bowl at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg on Dec. 21. Bowl eligibility did not come easily, however. The Runners got an expectedly tough game from the North Texas Mean Green up in Denton. UNT’s surprisingly feisty defense surrendered only one touchdown, forcing UTSA to settle for field goals in four of its five red zone visits. After the Runners fell behind 7-0 then tied it on Tucker Carter’s school record-tying 8th rushing touchdown of the season, it was a 42 yard fumble return by strong safety Cody Berry that gave them a lead that would not be given up. The red zone inefficiency, however, got the Runners green around the gills with queasiness when UNT closed to within 20-17 and UTSA was only able to respond with a field goal that left the potential for a Mean Green touchdown drive to produce a 24-23 North Texas lead. The Runners, though, were spared by a four-play turnover on downs and another field goal that put the game out of reach in the waning seconds.
After getting a verbal hiding from head coach Larry Coker about abandoning the pocket too quickly and too often over the past couple of games, Carter looked like the message was received and understood. It helped that UNT’s pass rush was virtually non-existent and failed to generate any sacks. That complete absence of sacks allowed Carter to finish the day with 102 rushing yards on 21 carries. David Glasco chipped in another 66 yards on 14 attempts and helped the Runners grind down the clock in their final series.
