Building The Dam

WR Brandin Cooks making a cut on his way to the endzone, 1 of 3 TD's on the day

OSU Keeps It Cook(s)in' Against Colorado
Corvallis, OR-- On a day where QB Sean Mannion techinally only had two incompletions all day, it was WR Brandin Cooks who stole the show. Mannion was 19/23 with 344 yards, 5 TD's and 2 INT, but it was Cooks who he kept targeting and for good reason, he was wide open most of the time. After an early touchdown run in the first quarter, the Buffaloes struck back quickly tying the game up at 7-7. The Colorado touchdown was a 46 yard pass from QB C. Wood to WR N. Spruce. In a coverage gaff, Spruce ended up wide open. That would be the last time CU saw day light.

In the second quarter the passing barrage started. Cooks caught his first touchdown on a 13 yard slant. After a CU three and out, Mannion and the Beavs marched down and scored again. This time a 12 yard pass to TE Connor Hamlett. CU made a drive but the defense held and forced the field goal, which K W. Oliver made, 21-10 OSU. Coach Mike Riley didn't use any time outs in the first half. With less than two minutes left, Mannion connected with Cooks on a 36 yard pass, setting up the 26 yard touchdown strike to TE Connor Hamlett with two seconds left in the half. 28-10 OSU at the half.

Mannion would love to forget the third quarter. Other than Cooks racking up yards and Woods too, Sean would throw two interceptions killing promising OSU drives. Early on in the fourth though he would connect with Cooks for a 21 yard touchdown and a 28 yard touchdown to make the final 42-10.

In the second half the defense really just turned into a brick wall. LB's Doctor and Alexander were flying around. CB Steven Nelson netted his first pick and CB Rashaad Reynolds would grab his second of the year. More on Doctor though, he had four tackles for loss, a sack, forced a fumble and was excellent in coverage. He is the heart and sole of the defense. As great as DE Scott Chrichton is, Michael Doctor is the difference maker.

By The Numbers... OSU had their biggest offensive outburst of the year gaining 510 yards of offense, while holding Colorado to 164, which is the least the defense has given up all year. On 3rd downs the Beavers were a perfect 5/5 while CU managed a dismal 2/8. OSU has a BYE next week. Look for a recruiting update in the OSU Preview along with all the other great Around the NCAA features.

The OSU Preview- Week 7
Hittin' The Recruiting Trail
The Beavs have had 4 prospects commit already this year.
#5 DE- Nate Harris- 6'2" 283 lbs.- Dallas, OR ****
  • Harris might not be the fastest guy, but he can get to the QB. He can shed blocks well and is a solid tackler. Harris was the top prospect in Oregon. A great in state get for OSU.
#23 WR- Bryson Ross- 6'5" 204 lbs- Delray Beach, FL -****
  • Ross has decent speed and good hands. He's an excellent route runner. He's not a great returner, but at 6'5" he is a great weapon in the middle of the field and in the red zone
#20 OG- Gavin Jordan- 6'3" 264lbs- Indian Hills, NV-***
  • In some scouting circles Jordan is a gem. Some think he can make an immediate impact at the next level. He has great strength. He is a phenomenal run blocker and a really good pass blocker.
#48 DT- Marques Johnson- 6'4" 270 lbs- Beaverton, OR-***
  • Johnson was Oregon's 3rd rated prospect. He is a great in state get with Harris. He has good strength and gets off his blocks well. He also has good bull rush moves and swim moves.

Game Notes
Oregon State made a big jump in the polls after their bye week. Washington State has won two out of their last three games. Including a big win down in Berkeley vs Cal. OSU's pass defense will be tested against The Mad Pirate's Air Raid Offense. Oregon State has the #2 rated defense in the nation, they are #1 against the run and #15 vs the pass. The offense will have to score to win. Which shouldn't be a problem. At 45.4 PPG the Beavers are second in the nation in scoring.

Keys to an OSU Win

1. Get a good pass rush
2. Limit turnovers
3. Getting the run game going

Re: Building The Dam- An Oregon State Dynasty -NCAA 14

Building The Dam

RB Storm Woods gets his second TD and the Beavers the lead in the 3rd quarter

Beavs Survive Upset Minded Cougs
Pullman, WA-- The Beavers did not play their best at all on Saturday. Neither team moved the ball well. After a scoreless first quarter, OSU scored first in the second quarter on a Storm Woods run. Washington State did not back down. They drove down the field, QB C. Halliday scampered for a 35 yard touchdown run. After a Sean Mannion interception the Cougs, kicked a field goal to end the half. For the first time all year the Beavs trailed at half, 10-7.

Wazzou got the ball to start the second half. The OSU defense bent but didn't break and they gave up a field goal, 13-7 WSU. Riley decided ball control was his best defense. The Beaver offense ran 12 times on a 16 play scoring drive, capped with RB Storm Woods getting touchdown number two on the day, 14-13.

The Oregon State defense finally woke up. Mark Banker started calling more blitzes to pressure the conference leader in passing, Halliday. Oregon State would net a 25 yard field goal after stalling the drive inside the 20 yard line, 17-13. After another three and out, OSU would run their way to the endzone with :30 seconds left. It would be Woods' third touchdown of the day. The Beavs survive a fiesty Cougar team, 24-13.

By The Numbers... The offense managed 313 yards, while the defense held WSU to 119. OSU converted 6/11 3rd downs while WSU went 0/4. OSU held the ball for 18:53 of the game, compared to WSU's 5:07. The Beavers will travel to Berkeley next to face the Cal Bears.

Game Notes
Oregon State has to forget about last week's narrow escape in Pullman. Cal has already upset Oregon and though Oregon State hasn't lost in Berkeley since the 90's, Cal needs a big win to turn around the season. OSU has to be ready to defend the pass, Cal has the #7 passing offense. Luckily the Beaver bost the #4 best pass defense. Without Stud RB B. Bigelow Cal has the #122 rushing offense which games 83.5 YPG. OSU's Defense gives up 71.2 YPG which is #1 in the nation. Don't look for that to change.

Keys to an OSU Win

1. Force Turnovers
2. Don't give Cal opportunities
3. Mannion has to be on point

Re: Building The Dam- An Oregon State Dynasty -NCAA 14

Building The Dam

Brandin Cooks making a great catch and ends up scoring on the play
OSU Gets Through Rough First Half, Pulls Away in Second
Berkeley, CA-- After giving up a touchdown on the first drive, Oregon State woke up. If you look at QB Sean Mannion's stats you would think he was the player of the game. You would be wrong. It was WR Brandin Cooks who shined. He only had five catches but they were five huge catches and three of them were touchdowns.

The Cal defense keyed on RB Storm Woods and they were successful. Holding Woods to his lowest total of the year. OSU's defense was just as stout. They got good pressure on Kline. DE Scott Chrichton amassed five tackles for loss, two of those were sacks on QB Kline.

Next week OSU faces Stanford coming off a loss to Utah a couple of weeks ago. OSU will have to bring their "A" game. The offense isn't consistent and the defense could struggle if teams start attempting to run on them more.

By The Numbers... OSU gained 346 yards of offense to Cal's 207. OSU went 7-9 on 3rd down conversions compared to Cal's 2/7. This was the first game all year that there was no turnovers in for either side.

The OSU Preview- Week 9
Hittin' The Recruiting Trail

#8 WR- Andy Johnson- 6'1" 212 lbs, Jacksonville, AL- *****
  • Johnson was a complete steal and he's the complete WR. After visiting in Week 5 it only took 3 weeks for Johnson to say no to Nick Saban and commit to the black and orange. Johnson has a good frame with good speed and acceleration. He has solid hands but has the knack for making the spectacular plays. He's a good leaper too for those high balls. With OSU possibly losing Cooks to the NFL, Johnson has the potential to start next year.
#157 DT- Shawn Lambert- 6'0" 300 lbs- Kahului, HI- * [JUCO]
  • Lambert isn't a highly recruited DT, but the coaching staff loves his bowling ball size. He will be a transfer from the JC ranks. Lambert has good strength and power. He isn't the best tackler but he is able to disrupt the line. With two SR's on the line, Lambert is good depth for OSU.

Game Notes
This is the measuring stick for Oregon State. This is the game that they have been looking forward to all year. Stanford is a team that matches up with OSU very well and vice versa. OSU is #4 in the nation in PPG, Stanford is #7. OSU is #1 in the nation in rush defense at 60.6 YPG, Stanford is #2 with 96.7. This is the biggest test for OSU in 3 years. If they win this game, they control their destiny in the North. Stanford would love to knock OSU out of the picture. Look for the best played football game of the year.

Keys to an OSU Win

1. Establish the Run
2. Limit Turnovers
3. Get Pressure on Hogan

Re: Building The Dam- An Oregon State Dynasty -NCAA 14

Building The Dam

RB A. Wilkerson quiets Reser Stadium as Stanford beats OSU

Stanford's Early Start To Much For Beavs To Overcome
Corvallis, OR-- Stanford's attack was too much for the beavers comeback in the fourth. RB A. Wilkerson rushed for an early in the first quarter and then early in the second. QB Hogan threw another touchdown in the second quarter after OSU got their first score. With 1:30 left Sean Mannion threw his second interception and CB W. Lyons returned it for a touchdown, to make it 28-7 Stanford at half.

To open the second OSU scored on a Mannion to Cooks touchdown. But the rest of the quarter didn't result in points. The fourth quarter opened with a Mannion to Hamlett touchdown to make it, 28-21 Stanford. The Cardinal kicked a field goal with 1:58 left. The OSU passing game was on point down the field and then Storm Woods would score his second touchdown. It was too little too late. Stanford killed the clock and went home with the win.
