Old Dominion vs. South Alabama: Position-by-Position Grades

BY DEREK YOUNG (FEATURED COLUMNIST) AUG 29, 2013

Offensive Line

The Jaguars won the battle in the trenches and that is why they won this game.

The O-line didn't play stellar, but they played pretty good. South Alabama didn't block some run plays as well as they should and gave up a sack. South Alabama will need to fix some of this stuff if they want to be top dogs in the Sun Belt.

However, they did allow J. Jones and C. Dinham to combine for 208 yards on the ground.

Defensive Line

As mentioned earlier, the Jags had stellar play in the trenches and the defensive line lead the defensive effort Saturday.

J. Kelly spearheaded the assault putting constant pressure on the quarterback and finishing the day with two sacks.

If the defensive line can keep up this play, they may carry the Jags through the Sun Belt.

Linebackers

There wasn't much to talk about regarding the linebacker play from Saturdays game.

The South Alabama corps played pretty good, however they allowed several long run plays and some yac on short passes. That being said, they didn't miss a single tackle and had a couple pass deflections as a unit.

Defensive Backs

The great play of the secondary may have been the reason why the Jaguars won this game. They locked on to the Old Dominion receivers all game and didn't give up.

South Alabama intercepted three passes and held the Monarchs to 204 yards, a good chunk of those coming in garbage time.

If they can keep up this play the South Alabama defense will be a force to be reckoned with.

Special Teams

There isn't anything bad that can be said about the South Alabama special teams.

McKee was a key contributor and the Jags leading scoring, 14 points. He made four field goals, a couple long ones, and two extra points.

MOBILE, AL-- The Jaguars are coming off an impressive 26-8 win Old Dominion and are looking to continue building momentum as Sun Belt conference play gets ready to start.

South Alabama heads just across the border to Tulane to face a very underrated Tulane team. With Nick Montana leading an explosive offense the Jags defense will have their work cut out for them.

Prediction: Tul 35, USA 24
