Signed through week 13; Class Rank #3 Recruiting - 15-16

Kellen Neal is a do everything type of athlete. In high school Neal has played receiver, quarterback, and defensive back. He has started every game of his high school career while playing both offense and defense as well as returning kicks. Neal has a huge arm but has some accuracy issues at times. As a receiver he has great hands and run good routs. He maybe under rated as a defensive back. He has the ability to lock down receivers but can make plays while in zone coverage. It is a question right now what position Neal will play but he should see the field a lot as a true freshman.

Howard Hodges is has the 3 things coaches dream of, height, weight, and speed. Hodges has played receiver, tight end, and linebacker. He is projected to play on the offensive side of the ball in college.

Tom Hayes is has good height but needs to add some weight in college to better match up with bigger receivers. Hayes has good zone coverage skills but needs to work more on his man coverage ability. Hays has the potential to be a solid college corner with time and proper coaching.

Lee Neal is a big tight end that also plays basketball. He has good soft hands. Neal knows how to use his body to gain position, a skill that will get him red zone opportunities. Neal has the physical tools to become a NFL type tight end.

Dwayne Wade is a big safety that can play the run support. He lacks idea speed for a safety but has good zone coverage ability. He can match up with tight ends. Look for Wade to move to linebacker.

Greg White spent last season at Iowa City Community College where he played running back. White has good size and speed. In high school he was ranted higher as a defensive back. White’s college position is still in question.

Colorado traveled to Arizona to do battle with a conference foe. Entering the game Colorado is riding the highs from the shutout over Arizona State last week so this game has potential to be a trap game. Arizona’s QB Connor Brewer struggled all day after his pick by senior Yuri Wright on the 3rd play of the game. Colorado got the ball on their own 44yd line and went to work. After 3 straight runs by sophomore(rs) running back Terrance Crowder that drive the ball inside the 20yd line, sophomore(rs) QB Sefo Liufau found senior(rs) TE Vincent Hobbs in the end zone for the games first score. After a 3 and out by Arizona, Colorado drove the ball down field again but the drive stalled around the 25yd line forcing Coach McDaniel to call on freshman kicker Travis Douglas who nailed the field goal. In the second quarter Liufau found senior WR Greg Thomas in the end zone to record his 2nd td pass of the game. The scoring drive was set up by a Jon Garcia int that ended the most promising drive of the day for Arizona. Arizona would turn up their defense in the second half forcing Liufau into throwing 2ints but it was not enough. The Colorado defense continued to play lights out. Colorado would score a short td pass, Liufau’s 3rd of the day, in the forth as well as Douglas’ second field goal. The win gives Colorado 8 on the season and current bowl projections have them playing in the Holiday Bowl verses Oklahoma State who is 7-3(4-3) on the season.

Next week Colorado travels to Utah for their last regular season game. Utah is currently 4-7(2-6) so they will be viewing this game as their bowl game. Colorado currently sits 2nd in the Pac-12 East behind #9UCLA who only has 1 conference loss and holds the tie breaker over Colorado.

Utah’s 14 seniors took the field for the last time against Colorado who is looking for a win to improve their bowl position. Defense was the theme of the day as Utah forced sophomore(rs) QB Sefo Liufau into throwing 3 picks and 6 sacks. Utah jumped out to a 17-0 lead before junior(rs) HB Donta Abron returned a 101yd kick for a td giving the Buffaloes their only score of the first half. Colorado would pull within 3 after Jon Garcia returned the 2nd half opening kickoff 101yd for a td. The Colorado defense held Utah scoreless in the 3rd quarter but the offense struggled to move the ball. Utah would score two consecutive touchdowns in the 4th quarter to increase the lead to 31-14. Liufau finally got the Colorado offense in the end zone with a 13yd td pass to senior WR Nelson Spruce but it was too little too late. Utah’s season ended today but the 14 seniors will always remember their last game was a win.

Next week is a bye then Conference Championship week. with the lose Colorado will finish 2nd or 3rd in the Pac-12 East.

Coach Tony McDaniel’s first bowl games was not how he dreamed it to be. Colorado enter the game on the heals of a lose to Utah due in part to the poor play of sophomore(rs) QB Sefo Liufau and the inability to stop running quarterbacks. Texas used the Utah game film to game plan around the speedy Overstreet and senior tailback Jonathan Gray. Texas scored on the games opening drive then senior linebacker Tevin Jackson intercepted Liufau’s first pass attempt returning it for 6 points. Before the end of the 1st quarter Overstreet would add a td run making the score 21-0. Colorado would not recover from that point. Texas ran the ball down the defenses throat while the Texas defense pressured Liufau all day long forcing him to throw 3 picks on the day and sacked 8 times. Colorado had only dreamed of one of those classic Holiday Bowl finishes but they got a nightmare. Texas will use the win to build upon for next year while Colorado will need to reevaluate the last two games to improve the team.
