Could the Knights Go Bowling?

Army football has not been relevant since World War II, but the Black Knights will have a chance to do something they've only done 6 times in school history, and that is go to a bowl game. Other than guaranteed loses to Stanford, Wake Forest, and most likely Boston College Army has a relatively favorable schedule.

They open the season against first year program Old Dominion, followed up with MAC doormat Ball State, and get another MAC doormat in October in Eastern Michigan. This team won't light up the score board, but if they can play consistent football a 7 to 8 win season isn't outside of the realm of possibility.

If they can execute like Army Cadets during drill, this team could cause problems for a lot of the teams they face with their option attack.

The New York/New Jersey Area Craziness Continues, Rich Ellerson fired from Army
Billionaire Jason Mathews Takes Over

As if this week couldn't get any weirder, the now owner of the New Jersey Devils, and New York Jets has taken over as Head Coach of Army Football in a move completely out of left field.

It is rumored that Mathews made a $200m donation to the school's new building transformation program, that had been put in place to help revitalize the older structures on campus.

This is certainly an unusual turn of events, and it wasn't immediately known if this was something that could even happen under NCAA guidelines, but the NCAA released the following statement:

There is nothing stopping a program from hiring a coach after a donation to the school. There will be no investigation into the hiring of Jason Mathews by Army, and we wish him success.

In the past two weeks Mathews has spent over $1.3 billion to get into the New York Metro sports scene. First he purchased the New York Jets for $959m, then two days later paid $201m for the New Jersey Devils, before his donation to Army. This is certainly not your everyday situation.

Mathews had this to say:

I look forward to the opportunity of rebuilding Army football. This once storied program has seen a turn for the worse over the years, but I will do whatever I can to make us a contender again. Hopefully with the new facilities being built on campus we can entice different types of athletes to consider West Point, and a career in the Army.
