Army suffers from the same thing most Service Academies suffer from. A lack of top end talent willing to commit to service time in the military. That will most likely never change unless another war like World War II breaks out (last time they won a national championship coincidentally).
While Army has a few key players that can make plays, their line is undersized. They average 6'3 240 pounds. That's the average linebacker at most SEC schools. They'll get pushed around and have trouble protecting AJ Schurr, who along with Raymond Maples are really the lone bright spots on an offense who will struggle this year.
The defense is not much better, but has two playmakers in the secondary in Chris Carnegie and Geoffery Bacon. Both Bacon and Carnegie can make plays on the ball, and cover well. It Army can generate a pass rush these two can help slow down opposing passing attacks.
That being said, Army does not have the talent of Navy or Air Force, but have a light schedule outside of a few games they'll get blown out in. Army has an outside chance at a winning season if they can pull a couple of upsets.
The Black Knights of Army will host the newest addition to FBS, Old Dominion. The Monarchs are no stranger to FBS competition, having competed yearly with some of the top programs in the country. Army is not one of them, but will provide a significant challenge to the first year program.
Army Wins If...they control the clock and the ball, and get the occasional stop they should be in good shape.
Old Dominion Wins If...They slow down the Army offense and force turnovers. Their defense isn't that great, and will need to step up to give the Monarchs a chance.
Army Rides Big Turnovers to Opening Day Win
Knights force three interceptions, score touchdown, record 8 sacks
Old Dominion struck first in this battle of Independents, scoring on a 79 yard pass from Taylor Heinicke to Blair Roberts after a blown coverage led to Roberts being wide open behind the defense by about ten yards. At that point Army had only gained 57 yards of offense on their own, and most wondered aloud if Army would be able to counter. They did.
AJ Schurr and company finally found their groove, relying on the rushing attack of Raymond Maples on a 14 play 68 yard drive, which ended in Schurr finding Patrick Laird wide open in the back of the end zone. These two would hook up again in the third quarter pass play that saw Laird make an amazing catch on a throw Schurr had to let go on the run, dragging his feet in the corner of the end zone.
Army took the lead for good on the next drive, after Chris Carnegie picked off an under thrown Heinicke pass, returning is 21 yards to the Army 40. The offense would methodically move into scoring position, as Maples capped off the drive with a one yard dive with under a minute to go in the half.
"It was big for us to take the lead into the half. We had outplayed them, at least I felt, all half but that big play hung over our heads." said coach Jason Mathews, who coached his first ever game. "Our defense made a big difference the entire afternoon. Each time they moved the ball onto our side of the field it seemed like the defense made a play."
The biggest play of the game came early in the fourth quarter, after Army had punted. On the first Monarch play Alex Meier stepped in front of a horribly thrown ball and returned it 19 yards for a score, and an insurmountable 21 point lead.
Old Dominion was able to pickoff AJ Schurr on a ball he shouldnt have thrown with 1:30 left to play and get into the end zone, but they hardly threatened after falling behind at the end of the first half.
Army will travel to Ball State, who won their opener against North Dakota State 35-13.
Army harassed Taylor Heinicke all afternoon, forcing 3 interceptions and sacking him 8 times.
Both teams come in off season opening victories, but Army was more impressive forcing three turnovers and recording 8 sacks in a victory over Old Dominion. Ball State has more talent on their sidelines, and if they can execute they should be able to run away with this.
Army Wins If... They play a near flawless game. If there defense can do what it did a week ago, they'll have a chance.
Ball State Wins If... They play their game. They are the better team coming in, and just need to stay within themselves.

Army Defense Stands Tall, Silences Ball State
Carnegie's pick in end zone changes tide, leads to Army victory
Coming in after an opening week 28-14 victory over Old Dominion, Army was looking to extend their season opening winning streak to 2, and to knock their magic number for a bowl berth to 4. Ball State came in looking to do the same, and to keep rolling.
Once again the game started slowly for both teams, as they exchanged punts for the first quarter and a half, with limited movement down the field. The game finally got going midway through the second as Keith Wenning carried Ball State down the field with his arm and legs. That drive was stopped in the end zone when Chris Carnegie stepped in front of a Wenning pass in the end zone, swinging the momentum in favor of Army.
Army's luck continued when Ejay Tucker caught a deflected pass on 3rd and long at the Ball State 7 yard line with :45 seconds to play. Tucker dove in late to complete the 23 yard pickup. On the next play Raymond Maples dove into the end zone for the lead, which they would not relinquish.
Army would run the lead to 21-0 in the third quarter on the strength of a Raymond Maples 23 yard touchdown run, and a Hayden Trippett 8 yard touchdown catch at the end of the frame. Army dominated the quarter as they took control for good, riding the momentum from earlier.
Ball State would threaten late, driving quickly down the field on their next possession for the score, but could not put it together after that, punting on their final drive before Army ran the clock out.
Chris Carnegie made the play of the game when he picked off Keith Wenning in the end zone
