NFL: Biggest Positional Battles In Buccaneers Training Camp
By Stan Dardjock
NFL training camp is upon us once more, which means football is just around the corner. Before the big kickoff, however, teams must decide who will play the majority of the snaps come game time, and who will be watching from the sidelines, hoping for an opportunity to get into the game.
Stakes are even higher than usual in this year's camp for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as every player and coach will be eager to impress new owner Rhys Withenshaw, who will be casting a judgmental eye over proceedings. Without further ado, here are the biggest positional battles we will see in this year's camp.
1. Adam Weber VS Dan Orlovsky
Hell hath no fury like a man denied a roster spot.
The battle between Weber and Orlovsky isn't the main quarterback battle that will be seen in camp this year, but that won't matter to either man. Whilst it is conceivable that the Buccaneers roll with three quarterbacks, there is no way they'll roll with four. Make no mistake, this battle is simply about making the roster.
An undrafted free agent in 2011, Adam Weber never really got a chance at Denver to show what he was capable of. He'll have to make a bigger impression on the Bucs if he wishes to stick around for a while.
Weber's opponent, Dan Orlovsky has six more years of NFL experience under his belt, thought that has been spent almost exclusively as a backup. Orlovsky has already been cut by the Bucs before, but was resigned just four days later. Simply put, he's tricky to get rid of.
2. Brian Leonard VS Mike James
Attempting to tackle Brian Leonard will result in being hurdled
With Doug Martin all set to be the main man in Greg Schiano's run attack, that leaves the real competition to who will be the primary backup.
Brian Leonard was a standout at Rutgers, revered for his ability to hurdle defenders as a halfback/fullback-hybrid. However, he has never really thrived amongst the professionals and after leaving the Cincinnati Bengals, he now finds himself in Tampa Bay.
Rookie Mike James will be the man looking to usurp Leonard for the primary backup spot. A sixth-round selection, James played his college football in Florida, which can only help his transition into the big time.
3. Demar Dotson VS Gabe Carimi
Will a change of scenery allow Gabe Carimi to fulfill his potential?
The majority of Tampa's offensive line appears to be set heading into camp, however right tackle remains up in the air.
In one corner, we have current incumbent Demar Dotson. Dotson is certainly no stranger to competition, beating out Jeremy Trueblood for the starting right tackle position last year.
This year, his competition will be Gabe Carimi. Carimi was a first round pick for the Bears in 2011, but hasn't quite reached the heights expected of him, in part thanks to injuries to his knees. After being traded to the Bucs for a sixth-rounder in the off-season, Carimi has a chance at a fresh start in Florida, and the chance to compete for a starting job.
4. Josh Freeman VS Mike Glennon
Could the Mike Glennon era begin earlier than expected?
This one is the "biggie", as they say in the business. You can bet your bottom dollar that all eyes will be on either Josh Freeman or Mike Glennon, or both even.
Josh Freeman has yet to find consistency in the NFL, and is now entering a contract year. The word is that Freeman has never really been Greg Schaino's guy, and we all know coaches love to bring in their own guy. Freeman, however, will be desperate to remain the starting quarterback, whether the Bucs intend to resign him or not.
One reason the Bucs might not resign Freeman, is Mike Glennon. Glennon was selected in the third round by Tampa Bay, and although he projects as a developmental arm, you can rest assured Glennon will be thrown in earlier than expected if he impresses in preseason and Freeman shows no signs of improvement.
