Virgil Slater The Underdog Coach (ncaa14)

The Iowa Hawkeyes and Head Coach Kirk Ferentz have announced that offensive coordinator Greg Davis has left the team for personal reasons. With only a month until the season starts it looked as though the Hawkeyes would be left in a tight spot, but they were able to find a new offensive coordinator really quickly, and his name is Virgil Slater.

Virgil Slater is 39 years old and comes from Dakota City,Iowa were he has been the head coach of the varsity football team for the last six years. Coach Slater only played two years of organized football back in high school. Right after high school he became the special teams coach at his Alma Mater. He stayed at that position for 10 years before being named offensive coordinator. He was the offensive coordinator for five years before being named head coach.

"I'm happy to be here and I know people say it all the time, but it really is a dream come true to be able to have a chance to coach at the next level. Having never played college football or even attending college for that matter, it was an honor to receive a call from Coach Ferentz. Hopefully I won't let him down."

Re: Virgil Slater The Underdog Coach (ncaa14)

Since I decided not to buy Madden 25, which I am very happy I haven't done, I decided to do another coaching career. I did one for NCAA 12 and it came out pretty good. So this one will look a lot like that one did.

A couple of different things for this one though. First, all penalties sliders are at default and I am playing on AA sliders with the only slider change being the throwing accuracy down to 5 for me and the computer.

The second thing is this won't be a coach mode career. I will be using the QB using player lock so I only will control him through out the play.

Maybe the last thing is recruiting. As an offensive coordinator I will do no recruiting. I am going to let the AI handle that. Once I become a head coach I will recruit.

So I hope you follow along as Virgil Slater starts his NCAA coaching career.

Re: Virgil Slater The Underdog Coach (ncaa14)

Iowa Goes Down At Home

On a picture perfect day for football, the Iowa Hawkeyes lost at home to the 24th ranked team in the country, the Northern Illinois Huskies 28-23. The Hawkeye defense played a very solid game holding the Huskies to just 194 yards of offense. But it was the offense that caused the problems, as the Hawkeyes QBs threw three interceptions, two of them were returned for touchdowns and the third led to a touchdown.

On the last play of the first half Iowa starting QB Jake Rudock suffered a sprained elbow. He will be out of action for at least a month. When Rudock left the game he was 11-20 passing for 104 yards and 2 interceptions, and Iowa trailed 14-3.

Backup QB Cody Sokol came in the in the second half and threw for 124 yards and 2 touchdowns. Sokol actually moved the ball well during the second half even getting Iowa ahead at one point early in the fourth quarter. After that though the Huskies scored 2 touchdowns in a row to put the game out of reach.

Jordan Canzeri gives Iowa the lead early in the 4th

A great diving touchdown catch by Don Shumpert was to little to late

Even though the Hawkeyes lost the offense looked really good at times. Coach Slater did a good job of mixing in the hurry up and having the guys huddle at other times. Iowa did gain 383 yards of offense and Coach Slater expects even bigger totals as the season goes on.
