Re: A New Era In College Park: A Maryland Terrapins Dynasty (NCAA 14)

Alabama, Ohio State still 1-2 in new AP poll

NEW YORK--Alabama and Ohio State retained their commanding lead in the new Associated Press Top 25 poll Sunday, maintaining a 100-point margin over third-ranked Florida following a weekend of upsets.

A.J. McCarron and the Crimson Tide continued their stay as the top-ranked team following a 26-14 win over Mississippi in Tuscaloosa. Braxton Miller and the Buckeyes narrowed the Crimson Tide's lead though, after a nailbiting 27-26 win over Wisconsin at home.

Losses by Stanford and Oklahoma pushed Florida to the No. 3 spot after the fifth-ranked Gators cruised to a 28-21 win over Kentucky. Louisville jumped from sixth to fourth in a bye week. Texas, also on a bye, moved from fifth to seventh.

Oklahoma State moved from eighth to sixth following a 41-27 win over West Virginia in Morgantown. Oklahoma dropped to seventh from No. 4 following a 49-30 road loss to 18th-ranked Notre Dame.

Texas A&M moved from ninth to eighth after crushing Arkansas 52-6 in Fayetteville. Nebraska, off after a 4-0 start, remained at No. 10.

Notre Dame made the second-biggest jump in the polls, moving from No. 18 to No. 11 after beating the Sooners in South Bend. Their win bumped Georgia from No. 11 to No. 12 after the Bulldogs needed an overtime field goal to escape LSU 45-42.

USC also fell one spot, from No. 12 to No. 13, despite a 23-17 win on the road against Arizona State. Northwestern stayed at No. 14 following a 52-7 win over FCS opponent Maine.

Michigan State moved two spots during their bye week, from No. 17 to No. 15. UCF jumped into the polls at No. 16 following a 27-20 win over 21st-ranked South Carolina in Orlando, the first time since 2010 the Knights have been ranked.

13th-ranked North Carolina fell to No. 17 after a 28-17 loss to Maryland at home, while 16th-ranked Wisconsin fell to No. 18 following a 27-26 loss to Ohio State. The Badgers nearly beat the Buckeyes in a thriller, losing only after Joel Stave was strip-sacked near midfield with seconds remaining.

UCLA moved up one spot during their bye week, from No. 19 to No. 20. Fresno State moved into the top 25 behind the Bruins after a 14-7 overtime win over Hawaii that pushed the Bulldogs to 5-0.

TCU fell from 15th to 21st after a 38-24 loss to rival SMU. Ball State jumped into the poll after a 34-28 win over 25th-ranked Toledo, moving in at No. 22 for the school's first AP ranking since 2008.

Miami fell from No. 19 to No. 23 following a 27-21 loss to South Florida in Tampa. Tennessee remained at No. 24 after a 31-16 win over South Alabama.

Maryland jumped into the poll at No. 25 following their win over 13th-ranked North Carolina, the first time since 2010 the Terrapins have been ranked.

No. 21 South Carolina, No. 22 Michigan, No. 23 Florida State, and No. 25 Toledo all dropped out of the poll after losses.

Re: A New Era In College Park: A Maryland Terrapins Dynasty (NCAA 14)

Offensive woes doom Florida State in loss to No. 25 Maryland

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.--Jameis Winston didn't expect his first season starting under center quite like this.

Winston and the Florida State Seminoles were supposed to be the sole challenger able to topple the Clemson Tigers, but Florida State's offense sputtered for the third time in four ACC contests, managing only a field goal in a 17-3 loss to the Maryland Terrapins.

Winston threw for 172 yards and James Wilder Jr. gouged a stout Terps run defense for 74 yards, but the Seminoles were stopped three times deep in Maryland territory.

One led to Roberto Aguayo's chip-shot field goal, but Florida State failed to convert on fourth down the other two times, including a fourth quarter drive that stalled three yards from the end zone.

Two interceptions by C.J. Brown kept the Seminoles in the game until the final moments. One came on a late fourth quarter series for Maryland that eventually set up Florida State's failed last-gasp drive.

Stefon Diggs was his usual stellar self, catching two touchdown passes to give the sophomore sensation 11 touchdown catches on the season, one shy of Torrey Smith's school record set in 2010.

Brandon Ross's streak of consecutive 100-yard rushing games ended at five, as the running back was held to just 78 yards on 19 carries.

Brad Craddock's third quarter field goal was the first for the Australian rules footballer in 2013.

Re: A New Era In College Park: A Maryland Terrapins Dynasty (NCAA 14)

Stanford continues freefall in latest AP Poll

NEW YORK--After dropping their second straight game, Stanford continued to plunge in the polls, moving from No. 9 to No. 18 in the new Associated Press Top 25 Poll.

Stanford was ranked third two weeks ago after opening the season 3-0, but back-to-back losses to Washington State and Washington have dropped the Cardinal nearly to the brink of falling out of the top 25.

There was no change in the top eight teams in the poll, although Ohio State cut into Alabama's lead atop the poll slightly.

Alabama crushed new FBS school Georgia State 45-0 to move to 5-0, while Ohio State breezed by 14th-ranked Northwestern 49-23.

Florida stayed at No. 3 following a 27-20 win over Arkansas. Louisville opened American Athletic Conference play with a 38-14 win over Temple to remain at No. 4.

Texas beat Iowa State 27-12 to stay ranked No. 5, while conference foe Oklahoma State crushed Kansas State 38-3 to keep their sixth-ranked spot in the poll. In-state Big 12 rival and seventh-ranked Oklahoma walloped 21st-ranked TCU 52-21, moving within 15 votes of the Cowboys.

Texas A&M, on a bye week, remained at No. 8. Nebraska moved from No. 10 to No. 9, taking Stanford's spot after beating Illinois 35-14.

Notre Dame moved up one spot, from No. 11 to No. 10, after crushing Arizona State 34-7. Georgia moved back into the No. 11 ranking after being bounced by the Fighting Irish last week. The Bulldogs narrowly won against Tennessee in Knoxville 45-42. USC also moved up one spot, from No. 13 to No. 12, while on their bye week.

Michigan State jumped from No. 15 to No. 13 after a 34-20 win over Iowa. UCF moved from No. 16 to No. 14 after beating Memphis 38-28, while Wisconsin jumped from No. 18 to No. 15 during their bye week.

Northwestern slid from No. 14 to No. 16 after their loss to Ohio State. UCLA moved from No. 19 to No. 17 after a 33-10 win over Utah.

Behind Stanford, Fresno State moved from No. 20 to No. 19 after crushing Idaho 51-14. Maryland jumped from No. 25 to No. 20 following a 17-3 win over Florida State in Tallahassee.

Four new teams entered the poll from Nos. 21 to 24. Washington entered at No. 21 after their upset over Stanford. Undefeated Kansas jumped in at No. 22 following a 20-15 win over Texas Tech. Fellow unbeaten Louisiana-Lafayette slotted in at No. 23 following a 37-7 beatdown of Texas State.

Georgia Tech moved in at No. 24 following their win over 23rd-ranked Miami 41-20. Conference foe North Carolina slotted in behind the Yellow Jackets at No. 25 following a 24-18 loss to Virginia Tech.

No. 21 TCU, No. 22 Ball State, No. 23 Miami and No. 24 Tennessee all dropped out of the poll after losses.

Re: A New Era In College Park: A Maryland Terrapins Dynasty (NCAA 14)

McDougle's interception seals win for Maryland over Virginia

COLLEGE PARK, Md.--Up eight points with Virginia driving late in the game, Randy Edsall admitted he thought the Terrapins were going to be headed to overtime.

Luckily for Edsall and the Terrapins, it never happened.

Senior cornerback Dexter McDougle jumped a David Watford pass with 14 seconds left in the game, returning it 81 yards for a touchdown to seal a 21-6 win for Maryland over the Cavaliers.

Watford threw for 176 yards, but threw two costly interceptions to McDougle on second half drives. Virginia had another drive stopped early in the second quarter that led to Ian Frye's first field goal.

Frye's two field goals were the only points Virginia could muster.

A strong running game led by Brandon Ross helped keep the Cavaliers behind throughout the game. Ross ran for 104 yards and two touchdowns, his sixth 100-yard rushing game.

C.J. Brown added 53 yards on the ground, but struggled through the air, completing only 4-of-10 passes for 86 yards.

Re: A New Era In College Park: A Maryland Terrapins Dynasty (NCAA 14)

Diggs sets school touchdown reception mark in win over Wake Forest

COLLEGE PARK, Md.--C.J. Brown returned to form, Stefon Diggs had another outstanding performance, and the Maryland Terrapins rolled to another win and their best start in 12 years.

Diggs caught three touchdown passes in a 28-7 win over Wake Forest, breaking Torrey Smith's school record of 12 in 2010. The sophomore from Gaithersburg, Md., has an NCAA-leading 14 touchdown catches on the year.

Maryland is off to its first 8-0 start since 1976. The Terrapins went 7-0 in 2001 before losing to 10th-ranked Florida State in their eighth game that year.

Two Diggs touchdown catches and a four-yard touchdown run by Brandon Ross put the Demon Deacons in a 21-0 hole at halftime. A successful flanker sweep by Sherman Ragland III briefly got Wake Forest back in the game, but Diggs's third touchdown grab sealed the win for the Terrapins.

After struggling in Maryland's last three games, Brown bounced back against a porous Wake Forest defense, throwing for 217 yards and three touchdowns. The senior did have an interception, coming off a tipped pass to tight end Dave Stinebaugh on a drive in the red zone during the third quarter.

Re: A New Era In College Park: A Maryland Terrapins Dynasty (NCAA 14)

Alabama, Ohio State top AP Poll after upsets

NEW YORK--Alabama and Ohio State stand alone atop the AP Top 25 Poll released Sunday, following losses by four of the other eight teams in the top 10.

The two teams lead the rest of the poll by nearly a 300-point margin, continuing their climb after blowout conference wins. Alabama crushed Arkansas 56-30, while Ohio State continued its win streak by rolling over Iowa 48-17.

Oklahoma, the highest-ranked one-loss team, moved from No. 5 to No. 3 after a 45-3 blowout win over Kansas. Texas A&M slotted behind the Sooners at No. 4, moving up from No. 7 after beating Auburn 55-21 in College Station.

Nebraska (6-0) and Texas (5-1), both on bye weeks, moved from No. 8 and No. 9 in last week's poll to No. 5 and No. 6 this week, respectively.

The USC Trojans were the biggest risers in the AP Poll, jumping five spots from No. 7 to No. 12 after upsetting Notre Dame 31-17. Georgia slotted in behind the Trojans, moving from No. 11 to No. 8 after beating Vanderbilt 32-21 in Nashville.

UCF also jumped into the top 10, rising from No. 14 to No. 9 after a 34-23 upset over fourth-ranked Louisville, their highest ranking in school history. The Cardinals fell behind UCF in the latest poll, dropping from No. 4 to No. 10 after UCF's win.

Michigan State rose two spots, from No. 13 to No. 11, following a 28-13 win over Purdue.

Northwestern jumped from No. 15 to No. 12 after beating Minnesota 31-21, the school's highest ranking since the Wildcats reached No. 14 in October 2001. Rising behind Northwestern was Maryland, which moved to No. 13 from No. 17 after a 28-7 win over Wake Forest.

Notre Dame fell from No. 10 to No. 14 after a 31-17 loss to 18th-ranked USC. The Fighting Irish are one of three teams in the AP Top 25 Poll with two losses.

Fresno State rose again in the AP Poll despite a tight 26-21 win over UNLV. The school's 7-0 start is its best since 2001, when David Carr led the Bulldogs to six wins in their first six games.

Florida fell to No. 16 in the latest AP Poll following an upset loss at Missouri. The Gators started off the season 6-0, but their offense sputtered against the Tigers, reaching the red zone just once in the game.

Oklahoma State fell 11 spots from No. 6 to No. 17 after a 40-21 loss to TCU in Stillwater. The Cowboys had six turnovers in the loss, including two interceptions returned for touchdowns in the fourth quarter. TCU jumped from No. 19 to No. 23 after the win.

Wisconsin remained at No. 19 after beating Illinois 34-24. Georgia Tech moved from No. 21 to No. 20 during its bye week. Oregon jumped from No. 24 to No. 21 after a 47-20 win over Washington State. Ball State remained at No. 22 following a 31-25 win over Western Michigan.

Two-loss Michigan moved into the poll at No. 23 after besting Indiana 35-18. Two-loss Cincinnati slotted behind the Wolverines at No. 24 after a 35-26 win over Connecticut.

Buffalo moved into the AP Poll at No. 25 after a 34-7 win over Massachusetts, the first time in school history the team has been ranked. Buffalo's only loss this season was against Ohio State on Aug. 31.

UCLA (No. 16), Louisiana-Lafayette (No. 20), and North Carolina (No. 25) all dropped out of the poll following losses.

Re: A New Era In College Park: A Maryland Terrapins Dynasty (NCAA 14)

Ross, Terps power past Clemson in second half

COLLEGE PARK, Md.--After a slow start that saw Maryland and Clemson combine for just 14 points through three quarters, Brandon Ross and the 13th-ranked Terrapins came alive in the fourth quarter en route to a 35-14 win.

Ross ran for a career-high 216 yards and three touchdowns, two of which came in a 21-point fourth quarter for the Terps. Maryland led 21-0 after Ross's second touchdown run, but two quick Tajh Boyd touchdown passes put the Tigers right back into the game.

Ross ran for a third touchdown on a quick drive following Boyd's 69-yard touchdown to Sammy Watkins. A short pass from C.J. Brown to Deon Long to C.J. Brown with 32 seconds left in the game sealed the victory for the Terps.

Through nine games, Ross has rushed for 1,199 yards and 16 touchdowns. The redshirt sophomore ranked second on ESPN's recent Heisman Watch list, behind Texas A&M quarterback and reigning Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel.

Brown also threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Dave Stinebaugh in the first quarter to give the Terps an early 7-0 lead. Clemson punted on each of its next four drives, while Brown's fumble in the second quarter and a 45-yard missed field goal in the third ended two long Maryland drives.

The victory gave the Terrapins a chance to clinch the ACC's Atlantic Division against Syracuse next week. A win will ensure the Terps finishing no worse than second-place Clemson with the division tiebreaker in hand.
