Buckeyes Roll Bulls
Buffalo Lead Early, Lose 62-10

Coach BigJ's debut did not go well.

Picks: Kirk: Ohio State
Weather: Sunny
TV: Regional TV

8/31/13
Columbus, OH (AP) – The coaching debut of Coach BigJ did not go well on Saturday afternoon as his Buffalo Bulls were trounced 62-10 at the Horseshoe by the 2nd-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. Ohio State piled up 551 yards of offense including 425 yards on the ground as they won their 13th straight game.

The pesky Bulls (0-1) actually took the lead in the second quarter on a Brandon Oliver five yard touchdown run. But from that point forward Ohio State took over and they dominated the overmatched Bulls.

Braxton Miller ran the ball six times on the ensuing drive and scored on a three yard run to move the Buckeyes back in front, 10-7. Following a Drew Basil field goal, Bulls quarterback Joe Licata was sacked and fumbled, setting up a short Ohio State drive that ended in another Miller touchdown run as the Buckeyes took a 20-7 lead into halftime.

Miller ran for 106 yards in the first half while UB's Oliver ran 17 times for 70 yards in Buffalo's conservative game plan.

The Buckeyes forced a three and out to open the second half then quickly struck on a five yard Jordan Hall touchdown run. Following a Joe Licata interception, Carlos Hyde took a hand off on the next play and raced 72 yards for a score and the rout was on.

Braxton Miller scored on a 62 yard option keeper early in the fourth. Two more Buffalo turnovers made the final score ugly and really tarnished a halfway decent Bulls effort.

Brandon Oliver ran for 109 yards and a score in the loss for the Bulls. Wideout Alex Neutz caught seven passes for 101 yards.

"We came out and tried to establish the running game behind Oliver," said Coach BigJ. "Keeping the ball away from their offense was a key for us, but we needed to avoid the turnovers and we just didn't do that."

Ohio State (1-0) averaged almost 10 yards per carry in piling up the 425 yards on the ground to go along with seven rushing touchdowns. Carlos Hyde ran for 211 yards with Heisman hopeful Miller rushing for 172 while throwing for 126 yards

Buffalo will head to Waco next week for a battle with the Baylor Bears (1-0).

Defense Optional
Bulls Defense is No Show in Blowout Loss

Bryce Petty and Baylor's spread option attack decimated the Bulls.

Picks: Kirk: Baylor
Weather: Partly Cloudy

9/7/13
Waco, TX (AP) – For the second consecutive week, the Buffalo Bulls went on the road and were destroyed by a more athletic team that ran a spread option attack. Saturday afternoon it was the Baylor Bears turn as they manhandled the Bulls 58-41.

Baylor (2-0) piled up 656 yards of offense one week after Buffalo allowed 551 yards to Ohio State. Those numbers included 828 yards on the ground! The second closest team in all of the FBS is Air Force which has allowed 496. Buffalo is also worst in total defense (obviously) and points allowed with 120 in the first two games. Wyoming is a close second with 90 points allowed.

This was a typical Big XII shootout though as Buffalo's offense came to play as well. UB rolled up 504 yards of offense including a career high 406 yards passing from sophomore Joe Licata. He threw five touchdown passes, including four to senior Alex Neutz. The four touchdown receptions by Neutz were a Buffalo record. Neutz is tied for third in the country with 17 catches for 254 yards in the first two weeks.

The game went back and fourth throughout the opening half with Baylor pulling away midway through the second quarter on a Bryce Petty 11 yard touchdown run to put the Bears up 27-10. But Buffalo fought back with a late touchdown pass from Licata to Neutz and a field goal as the half expired to close to within 27-20 at the half.

But they would never get closer than a touchdown after halftime and Baylor pulled away, winning easily. Bryce Petty was the star for Baylor. The redshirt junior quarterback went 16 for 24 for 253 yards and ran 17 times for 197 yards and accounted for six touchdowns, including four on the ground. Backup halfback Glasco Martin ran the ball ten times for 105 yards and Lache Seastrunk ran it ten times for 94 yards.

Brandon Oliver was solid for the Bulls, gaining 117 yards on 23 carries, but his contributions were minimized after halftime as Baylor began to pull away forcing Buffalo to throw the ball all over the place. Besides Neutz big day, Fred Lee caught six balls for 118 yards and a score on the games final play.

Buffalo (0-2) will now return to Amherst for their home opener next Saturday against Minnesota (2-0). Kickoff is set for noon and the game with be carried on ESPN3.

Rock Bottom?
This Bulls Team May Be Historically Bad

Derricks Wells had a TAINT in the fourth to put a cap on this one.

9/14/13
Amherst, NY (AP) – The 2013 season is quickly turning into a disaster for the Buffalo Bulls. On Saturday afternoon, in their home opener, the Bulls were blown out for the third straight game as Minnesota embarrassed them 52-24.

The Bulls gave up a season low 521 yards! The Golden Gophers ran for 313 yards and were led by Donnell Kirkwood Jr who ran for 219 yards on 22 carries with two touchdowns and caught three passes for 62 yards.

Minnesota struck first, just a little over two minutes in, when Kirkwood broke off a 53 yard touchdown run.

The Bulls would tie it up after a 12 play, 78 yard drive that was capped off with a 13 yard Joe Licata scramble for a score. Minnesota struck back quickly, with a four play drive. Kirkwood broke off a 17 yard touchdown run to put the Gophers ahead.

Joe Licata would throw the first of his two picks deep in UB territory and the Gophers cashed in. Quarterback Philip Nelson scored on an option keeper from 11 yards out to put Minnesota in front 21-7.

A late first half touchdown run from Brandon Oliver cut the lead to just seven, but the Bulls defense showed that it can stop no one. Minnesota swiftly moved down the field and scored just before halftime on a Nelson 10 yard touchdown pass to wide out Isaac Fruechte.

The second half was a train wreck as Minnesota scored at will to pull away for the easy win.

"This is not how I envisioned the start of our season," said Coach BigJ. "But I feel that we will get things straighten out quickly and turn this thing around."

The Bulls (0-3) will have next week off as they try to get things straightened out before hosting Connecticut in two weeks.
