Game Notes
San Diego Keys to Winning - Control the clock. Use the run game to keep the Eagles offense off the field.
- Have a "bend but don't break" defensive scheme. Know the Eagles will get there yards. Try to limit the big plays.
- Gang tackle. The surest way to prevent big plays is to get as many hats on the football as possible.
Philadelphia Keys to Winning - Get pressure on Rivers. If you get Philip Rivers out of synch, he has proven he'll make bad decisions.
- Hurry up offense. The Chargers lack depth on their defensive line. Running an up-tempo offense will hurt them.
- Take away Gates. If the Eagles take away Rivers favorite target, lesser skilled WRs will be forced to step up.
Prediction The Eagles offense is too explosive. The Chargers don't have enough play makers on offense to keep up.
Philadelphia 24-10

Chargers Defense Holds
Causes late 4th Quarter Turnover to Preserve Win
Chargers 20 - Eagles 18
Philadelphia, PA - The San Diego Chargers defense knew it had a tough task against the Philadelphia Eagles offense. Good thing for Chargers fans the unit was up to the task. The Bolts “D” limited the Eagles to 306 yards of offense, more than 200 yards less than the Eagles generated on opening day. The Chargers held Michael Vick to an 18-36 for 181 yard passing day on the way to a 20-18 victory. Down 8 points with 3:00 remaining in the game, Vick led his best drive of the day, culminating in a 1 yard TD plunge by James Casey, bringing the Eagles to within 2 with 2:20 left to play. Chip Kelley had no choice but to go for the conversion and Vick’s short pass was knocked away in the back of the end zone.
After a terrible offensive series where the Chargers were unable to get a first down, the Eagles took over at their own 32 yard line with 1:25 left in the game. Vick completed a 17 yard pass to Jeremy Maclin, who got out of bounds, at the Chargers 49 yard line. Things didn’t look good for the Chargers. MLB Donald Butler knew his unit had to make a play. “15-20 more yards and they would have been in easy FG range” said Butler. “In the huddle I reminded the guys that if Vick tries to run, go after the ball.” The defense listened. On the next play Vick broke right out of the pocket and gained an easy 12 yards, however, he inexplicably failed to slide and FS Eric Weddle made a solid hit knocking the ball loose. The Chargers recovered preserving the two point win.
On offense, San Diego stormed out of the gate, scoring two first quarter touchdowns on runs by Ryan Mathews. They finished the half with 176 yards of offense and it seemed the route was on. The Eagles defense made some solid second half adjustments and the Chargers could only manage a FG after the break. Philip Rivers was efficient, completing 18-27 for 188 yards and one INT. Mathews was once again a grinder, getting 88 yards on 28 carries for a 3.1 ypc average. He also contributed 4 catches for 42 yards. The defense was solid, really displaying a “bend but don’t break” attitude. Butler finished with 5 tackles and Dwight Freeney added 5 tackles and a sack.
Overall it was a very solid performance in all phases of the game. It’s always good to go into an opposing team’s stadium, start out strong, and take the crowd out of it. Next week the Chargers travel to Tennessee to take on the 0-2 Titans and Chris Johnson. Stay Tuned!

Chargers Start Slow, Finish Strong
Defense shuts down Titans in 37-10 Route
Nashville, TN - For a while it seemed like this was going to be a long, ugly game. With two minutes left in the second quarter, both teams had combined for 7 punts and only 3 FGs. The Chargers held a 6-3 lead and just got the ball back after Tennessee's third consecutive punt. Philip Rivers had seen enough. "I knew we had to get something going to take some positive momentum into the half" said Rivers. "In the huddle I told the guys to just take a deep breath, loosen up, and have some fun. They definitely listened." Rivers led the Chargers down the field, capping the drive with a 29-yard TD pass to rookie Kennan Allen, giving San Diego a 13-3 halftime lead. It changed the entire complexion of the game.
From that point on the Chargers outscored the Titans 31-7 on the way to a 37-10 victory. "We executed well on both sides of the ball," said Head Coach Mike McCoy. "It was without a doubt our best performance to date." Philip Rivers finished 18-31 for 235 yards and 3 TDs. Ryan Mathews ran for 93 yards on 20 carries in 3 quarters of action. Rookie WR Kennan Allen continues to impress, catching 4 passes for 81 yards and 2 TDs. It was an impressive offensive performance. The offensive line once again was outstanding, surrendering zero sacks and allowing Charger running back to rush for 180 yards on 32 carries for a 5.6 ypc average.
The defense was equally impressive. SS Brandon Taylor intercepted Locker three times leading to 14 points for San Diego. Melvin Ingram had a career day. Getting the nod to start midway through the week, the second year pro made the most of it getting 3 sacks and an interception. His play makes Coach McCoy look like a genius for giving him the start, and it makes it difficult to remove him from the lineup. Rookie MLB Manti Teo was everywhere. He collected 9 tackles and knocked down a pass as well.
The Chargers are off to a 3-0 start, the first time since 2002 when they won their first four games. This week they host the undefeated Dallas Cowboys in what should be a great game.
