Richardson, Jackson Slash Rams As Browns Win Preseason Opener
Trent Richardson may have only received 6 handoffs in Cleveland's game against the Rams, but it was all he needed to rush for 119 yards in the first quarter. Brandon Jackson followed him up with 107 yards on 16 carries, 3 of which went for Touchdowns. The Browns rode their two hot backs to a 34-28 victory over the St. Louis Rams in the first game of the preseason.
The Rams were clearly not doing enough on the ground to stop the Browns' rushing attack. They fared better in the air, holding the Cleveland QBs to 195 yards and 1 TD on 19 attempts. Rookie corner Brandon McGee was the most impressive St. Louis defender, recording 6 tackles, two for a loss, and a forced fumble in the game. He was backed up by LB Sammy Brown, who had 4 tackles including a huge goal line stop and a late 3rd down tackle.
Offensively, the Rams struggled through the air, but found some new weapons among their young receivers and backs. The three Rams QBs threw for 5 interceptions and no TDs in the game, but rookie WR Stedman Bailey was a calming presence, proving reliable with his 4 catches for 47 yards. He made a couple of tough catches in high-traffic areas to convert third downs. On the ground, incumbent starter Daryl Richardson tore his labrum on his second carry, but Isaiah Pead and rookie Zac Stacy carried the load, combining for 151 yards and 3 TDs on 23 carries. With those two in the backfield, the Rams will rely heavily on the run game while Sam Bradford (2/5, 24 yards, 1 INT) looks to find his groove.
Tavon Austin, the Rams' 2013 first-round pick who started at WR, didn't get to showcase his talents much at either receiver or returner. The West Virginia product was turning heads with his returning abilities and his YAC production in practice this week, but wasn't able to convert that into production in the first game of the season.
The Rams will take on the Packers at home next week, in what should be an opportunity to see a bit more of the St. Louis starting lineup.
