Buffalo Bills Sold to Jim Kelly Group

The Buffalo Bills, long owned by their original AFL owner Ralph C. Wilson Jr, will have a new man in charge just in time for the 2013 season. Wilson, 94, has seen his health deteriorate rapidly over the past few years, and is in no position to run the team anymore. With no family members wanting to take control of the team, his only option would be to sell the team.

Jim Kelly, the legendary Bills quarterback who led the team to four straight Super Bowl appearances in the early 90s, put together a group to buy the team and keep them in Buffalo. Leading this group, and 60% owner of the team is Donald Trump. Trump and Kelly go way back, when Trump owned and Kelly played in the AFL. How ironic that a man that helped keep Kelly away from Buffalo for 3 years in a competing league, no comes in to save the franchise and ensure they don't move away.

Kelly Inc. has hired Kevin Mettler has team president and director of football operations. It will be interesting to see how the league accepts Mettler, who has no NFL experience and hardly any at the collegiate level. The Bills wanted to go outside the box here, as the same old hires haven't worked in Buffalo for 15 years.

2013 Preseason Preview





Position Battles:

QB1 - EJ Manuel vs. Thad Lewis - Head Coach Doug Marrone said there would be an open competition, despite the injury to Kevin Kolb. Manuel is the heavy favorite to win, but it's not his job yet.

HB1 - CJ Spiller vs. Fred Jackson - Spiller is coming off a monster year and is one of the most dynamic players in the game. Jackson is as reliable as they come and is a great workhorse. If Spiller can handle the workload, he's likely to start. Both backs will see ample playing time regardless.

WR3 - Marquise Goodwin vs. TJ Graham - With Stevie Johnson and Robert Woods holding down the starting spots, the battle for the 3rd WR becomes interesting. TJ Graham, a 3rd round pick for 2012 against this years 4th round pick, Marquise Goodwin. Both players are burners, the winner of this battle will be the one who learns how to route the better routes.

MLB - Kiko Alonso vs. Arthur Moats - Alonso is a 2nd round pick this year out of Oregon, and makes plays all over the field. Will he learn the NFL game fast enough to become a starter on day 1?

CB3 - Nickell Robey vs Brandon Burton vs Justin Rogers - This is likely a temporary gig, as Ron Brooks will take back this role when healthy. Until then, it's anyone's guess as to who doesn't suck enough to win here.
