Bears Rout Nevada in Season Opener

WACO, TX (AP) - The Baylor Bears began their 2013 campaign in dominating fashion Saturday, winning easily over Nevada, 48-17 at Floyd Casey Stadium.

Over the course of the dark and rainy afternoon, Baylor would unleash a downpour of their own, racking up almost 400 yards on offense, leading to six touchdowns.

Baylor started the game hot, with their first touchdown coming just a minute and 13 seconds into the game in the form of a 12 yard pass from Bryce Petty to Robbie Rhodes. Petty would throw for four touchdowns in the game, completing ten of 13 passes for 181 yards. Petty’s only mark against his stat sheet was an interception in the first half.

Things went from bad to worse quickly for Nevada, as starting quarterback Cody Fajardo had to leave the game with an ankle injury midway through the second quarter. Fajardo was three for three passing and had rushed for 27 yards before being sidelined. Backup quarterback Devin Combs started hot, but by the end of the game, had completed only about half of his pass attempts and had thrown no touchdowns.

In addition to Petty’s four touchdowns, halfback Lache Seastrunk added a TD as part of a performance that saw him pick up 139 yards on 18 carries. Cornerback Xavien Howard returned an interception 61 yards for a touchdown as well. Nevada would not find the endzone until late in the third as halfback Nate McLaurin was able to run it in from three yards out. Nevada scored again late in the fourth against the Baylor second-string defense on a one yard run by Combs.

The next game for the Bears looks even more promising, as Baylor plays host to Texas State, who are in their third year of FBS play, next week.
