re: Expanding In Colorado | Western Colorado Broncos (NCAA Football)

I always look at my schedule when I start a season and circle games I know I can win, games I hope I can win, and then the games I know I probably don't have much of a chance at. The plan is out of 12 games you would like to have 5 Knows, 5-6 Hopes and then the 1 or 2 don't have.

My guess is BYU and Nevada are on the fence of that Hope to Don't Have. Well Wyoming was probably a Know.

Anyways as always good luck moving forward..

Deuce2223: Yeah, I try to do that to an extent. I didn't put much stock into exactly who I was playing this year, but I definitely wanted to schedule a lot of MWC schools in hopes of gaining an invite. Then I chose my tougher, BCS conference, matchups to stay in the region with the Big 12. I figure I'll do a lot of the same next year.

Western Colorado Broncos

Coach's Corner: Week 9
October 28, 2013

We won, but it was an ugly game. In fact, our go ahead score came with just 0:10 remaining in the game. I really thought we should've won by three scores. However, fumblitis struck again. If we didn't cough the ball up so much, we would've won by at least two scores, if not three.

I was really impressed with Casey Dickson's poise and determination on our final drive. He mad the decision that he was going to win and he made it happen. Makes me glad that he's just a sophomore.

And then there was one. Shannon Burnette and Micah Long both dropped us from their lists. Linebacker Jon Cronin is the only prospect left. I always feel uneasy when a prospects leaves us as a soft commit for two weeks. But hopefully with us being able to give him our full attention, it's enough to sway him to committing.

Comments or questions to the coach are always welcomed.

Week 10: Vs New Mexico Lobos

Code:
Matchup At A Glance

Team UNM WCU
Offense C D+
Defense C- D+
Overall C D+
Points 24.6 22.2
Rush Off 105.7 157.7
Pass Off 228.8 122.5
Rush Def 121.3 94.1
Pass Def 291.2 281.7
Turnovers -1.50 -0.30
Offense
Senior Justin Phillips (89) is one of the best quarterbacks in the MWC, but he's been very turnover prone this year with 17 interceptions. Gary Ross (82) is an All-MWC receiver and a dangerous target for Phillips to connect with. Their line isn't bad, but their are definitely issues on the left side. Kicker James Phillips (82 Kpw, 89 Kac) is very accurate, but doesn't have the range.

Defense
Linebackers Garrett Botts (82) and Rich Thornton (84) lead their 3-3-5 defense, but depth is an issue on the line. Their five man secondary is solid and has depth, led by captain Vince Bowser (80). Freshamn punter Nick Gipson (72) has the makings of a future all-conference selection.

Game Plan

Defense

  • Stop Gary Ross.
  • Be aggressive, go for the pick.
  • Overload their left side on passing situations.

Offense

  • Heavy running attack at their weaknesses on the d-line.
  • Know where their star linebackers are at on the field.
  • Hold onto the DAMN BALL!

Western Colorado Broncos

Coach's Corner: Week 10
November 4, 2013

What a game that was! On paper I think you would've said New Mexico was better, but I think we were quite equal when you consider scheme and personel. It was a great effort by both teams and we were fortunate enough to come out on top. Getting pressure on Justin Phillips and mixing up our coverages is the reason he struggled. Our defensive game plan was executed almost flawlessly. On offense we still struggled with turnovers, but got the running game going enough to out score the Lobos.

We received great news from Jonathan Cronin - he committed! I think he'll make an impact right away on special teams and challenge for a starting spot in 2015. It's a downer that we have no more prospects for the final weeks of the season, but feels great to have our first commit.

This week we travel to Forth Worth, to take on undefeated #14 Texas Christian. They feature a potent offense, maybe the best we've seen or will see all year. It'll take our A++ effort to take down Goliath.

Comments or questions to the coach are always welcomed.

Wow! What a tough game to endure. What little we did right on offense was overshadowed by turnovers and a 300 yard rusher on defense. At least we came out of the game without any significant injuries. Onto Kansas State we go.
