Re: Expanding In Colorado | Western Colorado Broncos (NCAA Football)

Western Colorado Broncos

Coach's Corner: Pre-Season
August 26, 2014

It's almost football season and all of the hard work is about to pay off. I like where our team is headed and the improvements we've made. We're still very young and probably a big reason why the media has us labled as going 5-7 this year. I'd like to think we're good enough to become bowl eligible and for us, I think that means going 7-5 or better.

Casey Dickson has looked very sharp running the option this summer and newly recruited Andy Jones gives us a dynamic backfield. I think the Flex-Wide with two wide receivers will be our go-to formation this season. The ability to not show a "strong" side of the formation will help us in our improved backfield.

On defense, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned about our depth on the line. I like our secondary a lot and with losing no one after the season, we'll only get better. The linebackers are improving, but we have another young starter in Manuel Wright.

Here's a breakdown of our starters from last season to this season:

Code:
Starters At A Glance

Year 2013 2014
Backfield 74.0 77.0
Receivers 71.3 72.0
O-Linemen 74.0 73.6
D-Linemen 71.5 71.0
Linebackers 73.3 73.3
Secondary 71.6 72.0
Kickers 64.5 64.5
- 2013 Backfield has Mark Dorsey and Casey Dickson figured in
- Secondary also include nickelback

On the recruiting side of things, we're VERY interested in tight end Chase Merrill. We have our work cut out for us, but his size and speed could be dangerous from the wingback or fullback position in the triple option attack. Defensive end Kyle Wright is highly interested in us and lists WCU as the early front runner. He would make a fine replacement for impending departure of Ricky Fowler.

Comments or questions to the coach are always welcomed.

Really like the team preview writeup. Looks like you got some solid pieces to build your team around and make that next step. I see 6-7 wins a pretty realistic goal this year.

Huh, cant believe tonight is the first time i saw this. This is sweet. I love the old games, and when people do dynasties with them. Keep this up for sure, took some lumps last year, but like you've said..young team. Lots of pieces to build around and you started on a very strong note against SJSU. Got some solid targets in recruiting too. If you can land 4-5 of them in season that would set you up for a solid off-season.

Re: Expanding In Colorado | Western Colorado Broncos (NCAA Football)

Deuce2223: Thanks. I think we can get to six wins, hopefully seven, but any form of improvement would be great to see.

Bigsheen: I had the title named changed recently because I think A) people overlook it since it's on an old game or B) they think because it's an old game, it's inactive and just getting a random bump.

I really like how this game plays. It's amazing how much better it plays than the latest versions, I was pleasantly surprised when I went back. We'll see how recruiting goes. It's always tough to predict in-season recruiting on these versions.

As for the longevity of my dynasties. I had an Ohio Bobcats dynasty on NCAA '12 that I ran with a friend for 11 seasons. The only reason it didn't last longer was because he moved away. We posted it on here for awhile, but decided posting it took up too much of our time when we could be playing games instead. With this being a solo dynasty, time isn't of essence.

Western Colorado Broncos

Coach's Corner: Week 1
September 1, 2014

What a game! We dominated from the first snap all the way until the end. My only complaint is that we gave up too many sacks, but that's bound to happen with two new, young, starters on the line. In time, they'll be fine.

San Jose was moving the ball on us, but a penalty made their first field goal attempt a long 42 yarder that was blocked by Jared Griffith (he was close on a punt as well). Then on their next drive, they clanked one off the right upright and once again came away with nothing. Their turnovers didn't hurt them as the two interceptions didn't come until late in the fourth quarter. We were just able to stop them when it mattered the most.

On the recruiting side of things, we got some sobering news. Apparently Kyle Wright has recently gotten into some legal trouble and has been suspended for half the season by his high school coach. He may learn his lesson and straighten up his act, but we're in no position to take a gamble and have to part ways with his recruitment. John Wade was also dropped - due to academics. We also lost in-state corner Lonnie Davis. He'd rather head for the BCS and the Big 12.

On to Okie State this week. This will be a tough test after coming off a great showing in week one. Our offense is clicking and hopefully our defense can rise to the occasion. We will be without safety Joseph Pauly for five games. He had an off-campus incident that will simply not be tolerated. Andrew McDaniel will move to fill Pauly's void and freshman Jarred Nash. Hopefully this isn't the start of a slew of injuries/infractions in the secondary like last season.

Comments or questions to the coach are always welcomed.
