Game Notes
-------------------
The UNLV Rebels are now at .500 for the season, coming off of their second straight win, but have one huge question mark coming into the game. Last week their starting quarterback, Caleb Herring, went down with a broken elbow and will miss the remainder of the season and the main question everyone is asking themselves who is going to be their quarterback now? Nick Sherry, the opening day quarterback, has recovered from his strained pectoral that had him out for a few weeks, but after Herring went out of the game third string quarterback Troy Hawthorne actually played very well for coach Simon.....so who starts now? Coach Simon has said that it will in fact be Sherry starting the game, but if he starts to struggle that it wouldn't be out of the question for Hawthorne to come in in relief.

With that said, New Mexico might actually be one of the toughest opponents for UNLV as they love to run the ball and don't shy away from that. On the season, the Lobos have thrown for under 100 yards per game average and have rushed for over 200 per game average behind their leading man Kasey Carrier and their dual threat quarterback Cole Gautsche. It should be interesting to see how UNLV will handle New Mexico defensively on this one.

Re: A Fresh Start: UNLV's Search for Success (NCAA '14)

UNLV Survives Sloppy Play Behind Cornett, Hawthorne

LAS VEGAS, NV - It was certainly one of the big questions coming into the game and it was definitely answered even before the teams took the locker rooms for halftime. Nick Sherry got the start today and he was looking to prove that the opening day jitters were just that and put everything that's already happened this short time into the season behind him, however, things just didn't go his way today.

It wasn't very long into the game that Sherry ended up throwing his first interception of the day on a badly placed ball over the middle. Sherry just didn't look comfortable in the pocket and really couldn't get any momentum going. UNLV was lucky enough to get a touchdown in the second quarter, but that was behind some strong running by Tim Cornett.

New Mexico would come out of the gates running early and often just like everyone expected, and they severely gutted the UNLV defense. It was so bad that it looked like the Lobos were going to run away with it, that is until the bend don't break defense for the Rebels finally stood up. New Mexico put up a field goal in the first and would match UNLV's touchdown with one of their own to go up 10-7 with just over 50 seconds left in the half.

After Sherry's second interception of the first half, coach Simon had seen all that he wanted and promptly put in freshman Troy Hawthorne for their one minute drill. He worked the field masterfully, hitting Devante Davis near the sidelines and Jake Phillips working the middle. He would drive his team down field and find Marcus Sullivan from 17 out to go up 14-10 for the last score of the half.

Coming out of the half both teams seemed charged up, but it was the defenses for both that would step up early. The UNLV defense would force two interceptions and a fumble to put a stop to New Mexico drives, while the Lobos would put extreme pressure on Hawthorne and cause errant passes that went nowhere. The Rebels would break the silence late in the fourth as Cornett would start to gain traction on his run game and pound one in to put UNLV up by 11. New Mexico wasn't about to let this one go however, as Gautsche would continue to run the ball with ease over the Rebels and bring his team into the redzone and score on a 4 yard run. The Lobos would fail at the two point conversion and that was basically it.
