Re: Dive Right In - Florida Northern Sharks Dynasty (Teambuilder)

Florida Northern University to Join Football Bowl Subdivision

March 31, 2013

St. John's, FL - Today, as the sun rises over St. John's, and over McBride Stadium, it is not only a new day. It is the beginning of a new era for the players, coaches, and fans of FNU football.

"It's unreal," said sophomore quarterback Jordan Rollins. "To be passed up on in high school by all the D1 squads, and for all your work to pay off and move up. To prove you're just as deserving. It's like a dream."

It truly is. Florida Northern, as the local college of St. John's (only a stone's throw from Jacksonville) has had a huge student body but little athletics to meet the demands of the rabid fanbase. Without other sports on scholarship besides basketball, the students of Florida Northern focus all their attention on football.

The team was granted a transfer from FCS to FBS after winning the Big Sky conference last year and outscoring opponents by an average of 23.3 points. They will not be bowl eligible in their first year as a member of the Conference-USA, but that doesn't stop fans from being excited for the season.

Nathan Olson, a senior at Florida Northern, feels that things will only get better for the university as an athletic culture grows stronger.

"Even as a lower-division team we've supported our boys. We live in a huge football area, between the Jaguars, Gator Bowl and Florida-Georgia. I think the NCAA definitely got it right by allowing our squad to take it to the next level."

Head coach Ben Vernon will return to the team, as well as offensive coordinator Porter Jennings, who is also the recruiting coordinator.

Said Jennings, "I can't wait to get the boys out on the field and open up this playbook. I'm also excited at the prospects I'll be able to bring to our team now that we're at such a high level of competition."

Only time will tell how the Sharks' first season will go, but the fans don't much care. It's a bright future for Florida Northern.

September 7, 2013, Lincoln, Nebraska
In Florida Northern's first game as an FBS football team, they managed to hang tough with a top 25 team and only lose by 12 points.

For most teams, a 12-point loss is nothing to be happy about. However, the Sharks, coming up from the FCS ranks, were expected to be totally blown out. The team has holes, to be sure, but offensive coordinator Porter Jennings seemed upbeat.

"Y'know," Jennings said after the game, "a win would have been great, sure. But to see these guys play their hearts out and put their best effort out there against a team that was supposed to whoop us, it was just awesome. Of course, we're gonna learn from this, the work definitely isn't over."

One shining star on offense was senior running back Gabe Beverly, who averaged 5.1 yards per carry.

"It felt good," said Beverly. "I've been waiting my whole college career to see our program take the next step and to go out and average 5 a touch against a top 25 team, it's just amazing. Just amazing."

Other bright spots included star sophomore wideout Marcus Roule, with 6 catches for 76 yards and a score, and kicker Seth Kinnear, who connected on field goals of 47, 48 and 52 yards. On defense, the line was a menace all day, registering a combined ELEVEN tackles for loss. Defensive tackle Justin Horner and defensive end Jonathan Beach each recorded a sack, and Maurice Crowder managed ten tackles.

The Sharks are not without problems, however. Nebraska's failure to register a point in the second half is what kept the game from being a total blowout, and this was likely due to the injury to quarterback Taylor Martinez, forcing backup Tommy Armstrong into the lineup. Martinez's status is still being evaluated.

On defense, Buster Ray was 3rd with 8 tackles, but the starting corner was torched by Nebraska senior wideout Quincy Enunwa for 122 yards.

However, the Sharks' largest problem is the transition for QB Jordan Rollins. Rollins was 15-21 for 181 yards. A completion percentage below 50 is already bad, but Rollins also threw three picks to one touchdown. He was held to 11 yards on 11 carries. His gunslinging, exciting style is starting to show an inability holding up against better defenses. In addition, he showed a tendency to lock on to #1 wideout Marcus Roule rather than spreading the ball around.

"I just have to study the playbooks more," Rollins said in the locker room. "I know I have the teammates around me to help me succeed, so if I put in the work I know I can be just as good as I was last season."

Whether Rollins can put up the same stats he did in the Big Sky will be seen as the season progresses, but it seems Florida Northern has the right people in place to be coaching this team, and in the long term, we can certainly see success in their long-term future.

Florida should be a fun state to recruit from, and being a Florida school you got plenty of options to pick form in terms of rivals and conference affiliations if you ever decide to leave CUSA.

September 14, 2013, St. John's, FL

A sea of blue and yellow erupted in cheers and hollers as Seth Kinnear drilled the game-winning 45-yarder as time expired.

"In a word? Surreal," gasped Kinnear as his teammates surrounded him, giving pats and congratulations. "But I couldn't have done it without my boys setting up the drive for me."

Perhaps Kinnear isn't taking enough credit. He nailed three long kicks on the night, from 43, 48 and 45 yards, scoring a total of 12 out of the team's 37 points. Kinnear is quick to deflect praise to his teammates. To be sure, the win over Virginia Tech - a traditional ACC power - is cause for celebration for this little school that could. Of all Kinnear's teammates, however, the one who took the most strides was signal-caller Jordan Rollins.

Rollins, after an abysmal performance against Nebraska, seems to be getting the hang of things. Of course, he fumbled and threw two picks, allowing VTech a total of 14 points off his turnovers. But aside from this he completed 30 of his 47 passing attempts, with two scores: a bullet to Keon Holley from the 3-yard line, and a pass lofted perfectly into the hands of freshman tight end Lamarcus Dorsey, who high-pointed the ball in the corner of the endzone like a pro for both his first catch and TD of his college career. Rollins also added a touchdown on a 7-yard scramble. If Rollins can continue to develop as a passer and decrease the mistakes he makes, he surely has the talent around him to take his team to victory.

Star wideout Marcus Roule had a great night of his own as well. Roule hauled in 8 passes for 189 yards, but failed to find the endzone. Roule figures to be a main focus in this offense for the remainder of his college career. At 6'2", 218, the sophomore possesses the physical frame to outmuscle defenders for jump balls and yards after the catch. If Roule could show enough football IQ and technique, he certainly has the physical tools to be a receiver in the NFL at some point.

However, things were not all well on the other side of the ball. The defense, after having a monster week causing chaos in Nebraska's backfield, was unable to register a single sack, although the secondary was able to hold Tech's star QB Logan Thomas to 14-35 passing.

Perhaps the most distressing thing this week, however, was the performance by senior halfback Gabe Beverly. Beverly only averaged 3.1 yards per carry this week and allowed two sacks in pass protection. With speedster Stevie Barnes behind him on the depth chart, many are wondering if Beverly will be able to hold onto the starting job.

"It was a great win over an awesome team. Nothing feels like protecting your house, especially against such an established program. Coach Beamer did a great job tonight, Kendall Fuller was all over us in the secondary, I can't say enough good things about the Hokies, but at the end of the day I'm glad we were able to get a W at the end of the night, and I'm hoping this is a sign of things to come," said offensive coordinator Porter Jennings.

Exactly what I was thinking. Being from Florida didn't hurt either, haha. Hope you enjoy reading it!
