The Nebraska Cornhuskers and Head Coach Wesley Darrellson turned in an excellent year last season, winning the Big Ten title, and defeating UCLA in the Rose Bowl. This year, the expectations are a little bit higher. With star senior halfback Ameer Abdullah returning for his final season, many are speculating the Huskers to possibly make a run through the Big Ten and be National Championship contenders. Easier said than done, though, right?
Offensively, these Cornhuskers are led by Ameer Abdullah and senior wide receiver Kenny Bell. Bell had a disappointing season last year, but with the departure of Quincy Enunwa, expect Bell to be the target of many more passes this season. Here's the breakdown for each position on offense:
Quarterback: Quite the controversy here to start the season. Sophomore Tommy Armstrong Jr. impressed many last season as Taylor Martinez's backup, but it was redshirt freshman Johnny Stanton that won over the Husker fans in the Spring Scrimmage. Both quarterbacks are capable of running the power run offense that new offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich wants to gameplan, so I wouldn't be surprised to see both Armstrong and Stanton receive plenty of playing time this season.
Running Back: Obviously, the talents of senior Ameer Abdullah are recognized around the nation, but how about his backup, Imani Cross? Cross is a Junior this season, but he had a solid season as Abdullah's sub last year, going for 557 yards and 10 touchdowns. Could we see more of Imani Cross this season? Perhaps a thunder and lightning approach between these two. Behind them is Sophomore King Frazier and Freshman Adam Taylor. Young guys Jack Harrison and Gabriel Williamson are redshirts this year.
Fullback: Redshirt Sophomore Andy Janovich will take over the reigns this year as the team's sole fullback. Most of what will be asked from Andy are reliable hands and solid run blocking.
Wide Receiver: Possibly the Huskers' deepest position offensively, Nebraska has a wealth of big, young wideouts with speed. Leading the charge is senior Kenny Bell, the reigning Return Man of the Year. Next to Bell is fellow Senior Jamal Turner, and in the slot is Sophomore Jordan Westerkamp. Stud freshman Dave Townes will be a redshirt this season, but expect Taariq Allen, 6'3", to make a big difference for the Huskers in the red zone.
Tight End: The Huskers have always been pretty solid at tight end, but this year might be a tad different, as this will be Sam Cotton's first year starting. Behind him will be Junior David Sutton, as Cethan Carter will be a redshirt this season.
Offensive Line: Jake Cotton will be the leader of the offensive line this season at the Left Guard position. Left tackle Matt Finnin is expected to make a big impact this season for Nebraska, and the 6'8" Zach Sterup will make for an excellent run blocker at the right tackle spot. Other starters Paul Thurston and Mike Moudy will hold down the center and right guard positions, respectively.
-----
Defensively for Nebraska, the Blackshirts add another year of experience under their belt. Randy Gregory is a preseason All-American at the defensive end spot, and safeties Corey Cooper and Harvey Jackson were both 1st Team All-American's last season.
Defensive Line: Randy Gregory is the leader of this defense and this defensive line. His pass-rushing abilities will be vital for the Huskers. Sophomore Greg McMullen will make his first career start in the season opener at defensive end. Kevin Williams is also a returning All-American for the Huskers, and he'll be joined by Vincent Valentine at the Defensive Tackle position.
Linebackers: Plenty of young talent here for the Huskers. Michael Rose made the All-Freshman team last season, and Junior David Santos and Senior Zaire Anderson both return to their starting spots from last year. Expect freshmen Courtney Love and Marcus Newby to get some PT this season.
Cornerback: The loss of Ciante Evans and Stanley Jean-Baptiste will sting, but young guns Jonathan Rose and Boaz Joesph are prepared to take over in their place. They'll be joined by Senior Josh Mitchell and freshman Jonathan Green this season.
Safeties: Probably Nebraska's best defensive positions this year. Seniors Harvey Jackson and Corey Cooper made the All-American squad last year, and they're looking to repeat this season. Freshman DJ Singleton should make for a nice spell for the two seniors.
Special Teams: Mauro Bondi handled both kicking and punting duties last season, but this year he'll just do kicking, as Sam Foltz returns from his redshirt season last year.
Who do you see stepping up for the Huskers this season?

It's definitely a possibility. Not sure I trust the young arms of Armstrong Jr. and Stanton enough yet to take carries away from Abdullah and Cross.
Like I said though, my wide receivers are very talented. I'd almost feel bad if we underutilize them. Especially Bell, since he had a down year last season.
I could really see Taariq Allen making some big plays though as a slot receiver. He's got nice size at 6'3", nice speed with a 90 rating, and he has decent hands.

I won't say Abdullah since that's too obvious. But I like the thought of Kenny Bell having to step up to balance out your running game. With Armstrong, Abdullah, Cross, and Frazier even, you'll easily hit 3000 yards rushing and maybe 3500 or 4000. So, a deep threat on play action would be big.
