Recruiting Updates

The Eagles have 15 players visiting this week when the Eagles take the field against the Chippewas, but the news here is EMU's first commit under Coach Chris Creighton in 1* Center Devron Todd. Todd, a 6'2'' 289 pound lineman from South Milwaukee, WI was signed mainly as a warm body on a line that seriously lacks depth outside of the starting five. He excels in pass blocking (79) but his run blocking (60) leaves a lot to be desired in a run first scheme.

Commits:
Devron Todd, 1* Center

Game Notes
Central Michigan (3-1) enters Rynearson Stadium today on a three game winning streak (all three games on the road.) They lost their opener to NC State but then have beaten Kansas, Purdue, and Old Dominion on the road. Eastern Michigan comes in off a big road win over Syracuse, Bronson Hill made an impact in the game and will have to make up for the absence of Starting QB Brogan Roback. Tyler Benz will get the start in his place.

YPSILANTI, MI-- When Chris Creighton was hired, he had a couple goals for his team this season. Perhaps the most important to Creighton and the fan base was winning the Michigan MAC Trophy. This Trophy, for those who don't know, is awarded to the team that wins the most games amongst the three Directional Michigan Schools (Central, Eastern, and Western.) Ideally, EMU would sweep the two schools and win it outright. Today was a good start on that front as the Eagles flew past the Chips 31-17.

Perhaps the biggest reason why was the biggest question mark coming into today's game: Tyler Benz. Benz had a career day throwing for 412 yards and accounting for three touchdowns after questions about his ability to play following his shaky 2013 season. Benz shut up the critics and solidified his role as EMU's backup moving forward. Benz's favorite target on the day was Senior TE Tyreese Russel, a Mackey Award finalist last season. Russel caught 11 balls for 172 yards and while he didn't score any touchdowns, he did stretch the field and allow the Eagles rushing attack to get some traction and accumulate 125 yards on the ground. Enough to keep the pass rush honest for the Chippewas and buy Benz an extra half second or two in the pocket. Which was all he needed today.

On the Central Michigan side, QB Cody Kater had a really rough ballgame. He threw 5 interceptions, three of them to Senior DB Darius Scott (which tied a school record for interceptions in a game according to NCAA 14.) He also was sacked 2 times, but pressured and hurried upwards of 15 times today. CMU's offensive line just couldn't block anyone. The CMU rushing attack had 112 yards on 18 carries between everyone, which certainly begs the question why they wouldn't have attacked the EMU weakness. Maybe they watched the Week 4 game against Syracuse and figured they could beat the pass defense. EMU may have shown that game was an aberration, as if you take that game out, EMU ranks in the top 30 (28) in passing defense.

Next week EMU stays home to entertain the fans again in another MAC conference game, this time against the 2-2 Buffalo Bulls.

Recruiting Updates

The 15 players visiting last week when the Eagles took the field got to watch Coach Creighton's squad put on a show for them as they had their way with the rival Chippewas in a 31-17 victory. Immediately following the victory, the Eagles got some reinforcements for next season with Coach Creighton's next four commitments.

First on the list is a position that doesn't typically elicit feelings of excitement when they sign on the dotted line: the punter. Kenneth Vinson, a 2* punter from Kent, OH decided that EMU is the place for him going forward. He's the #23 punter in the class.

"If we're being honest, I didn't even scout the kid until he signed on the line. He's a punter, ideally I won't use him much anyways...but maybe he won't be punting next season after seeing the scouting report," says TheNumber35. "I don't know, his skills are really unusual for a punter, hell he's faster than the speedy receiver I'm looking at."

TheNumber35 is right on; Vinson does have a very unique combination of skills for a punter considering his sub 4.5 forty time (92 SPD, 91 ACC), quick feet (88 AGI), and high vertical leap (91 Jump) but the fact that he is in fact a living, breathing punter (75 KPW, 65 KAC) made him a valuable target for the Eagles who will lose their starting punter at the end of the season.

Next up is the 5'11'', 239 lbs 1* FB Tyler Jordan from Livonia, MI, he's the #36 FB in the class and was signed as a depth move more than anything else. "Greg Gold is a great player, but he's very one-dimensional...Jordan is faster (79 SPD), has better hands (68 CTH), and can block equally well as Greg (70 PBK, 67 RBK). I wasn't looking to replace Greg to start the season, but a positional move may be in line for one of these guys next season," TheNumber35 states.

After him, more up front, in the trenches talent commits as 2* Tackle Markus Smith from E. Los Angles, CA sends in his letter of intent. His 72 PBK and 72 RBK would be good enough to help him on his way to replacing one of the two senior tackles leaving this season. TheNumber35 on Smith, "I know what you're thinking...you think I broke the rules recruiting him right? Well you are wrong! He's had EMU on the top of his list from day 1 and has really never waivered in wanting to come here. He called me to be honest, is that some sort of player violation? Who knows."

And the final commit of last weekend is 2* Tailback Bryan Rhoden, a 6'0'', 202 lbs back from Rochester Hills, MI. Speed is the name of his game and Rhoden looks to come in and make a tandem with current Freshman tailback Garin Thorin . His 90 speed and 86 acceleration make him a prime candidate to be the team's third down tailback next season. If he can work on his sub-par carrying skills (54 CAR) that is. Obligatory quote from TheNumber 35, "Look, I know he puts the ball on the ground a lot...but NCAA 14 never gives up that many fumbles. It's been an issue for years now, and I'll take a chance on a dynamic runner to pair with Roback and Thorin in the backfield."

Commits:
Devron Todd, 1* Center
Tyler Jordan, 1* Fullback
Markus Smith, 2* Offensive Tackle
Kenneth Vinson, 2* Punter
Bryan Rhoden, 2* Runningback

Game Notes
Eastern plays a key MAC game at Rynearson Stadium this week against conference foe Buffalo. The Bulls are a very talented defensive team, ranking in the top 50 in both rushing and passing yards allowed per game. Their offense is led by a very balanced rushing and passing attack from QB J. Licata and RB D. Campbell.

On the EMU side, QB Brogan Roback returns for the Eagles and after a dominant performance from his backup he'll need a strong showing for the Eagles to avoid chatter for replacing him. Roback's played well this season, completing over 60% of his passes for 668 yards and 6 touchdowns. Tyreese Russel looks to be featured heavily against the Buffalo linebackers.

YPSILANTI, MI-- This is a game that will be remembered throughout the years of this dynasty as perhaps the greatest game ever played. Quite a high praise for a game played in the first user played season of this dynasty, but this one was arguably the best game ever played in the playing career of TheNumber35 and it certainly is a season defining victory. The game started out very even, with Brogan Roback and Joe Licata dueling back and forth throughout the first and second quarters. Each of them finding the endzone twice, Roback's target being Tyreese Russel both times and Licata spreading the ball around much more. Tied at 14 going into the half, that's when the game got good. EMU leaped out on a 17-0 run to start the second half behind Roback's arm and consistent running from the backs in Hill and Brumsfield.

Roback's game is one that certainly takes the headlines considering that he won and his touchdown numbers...but he definitely was showing his rust early in the game. Roback's been out of commission for four weeks with a sprain in his left elbow and thus his practice reps have been minimal. This showed early in the game as Roback threw four, yes four, interceptions in the first three quarters. Now on any other day this would probably have been a terrible game for Brogan and the fans could have been calling for his head. But not today. Roback broke a school record for touchdown passes in a single game that had stood since 2001, his 7 TD passes while being 4 short of the NCAA record of 11, is still incredibly impressive for the first year starter. Roback also had a rushing touchdown later in the game.

Back to the action, can't let myself get too distracted while writing this recap...or else I'll end up gushing about every single offensive lineman and this one pancake block he made in the first quarter. I'm lame like that, but I digress. Buffalo found the endzone late in the third to pull the game within 10 points on a long scramble from Joe Licata. Licata had the best ballgame I've ever seen a CPU QB have, you can see his stat line above but the number I'm sticking to is the fact that he turned over the ball twice while accounting for nine touchdowns. Nine touchdowns. That is a Buffalo school record, he also set the school record for passing yards in a game, and passing touchdowns in a game as well (according to NCAA 14.)

Another connection with Tyreese Russel to open the fourth quarter scoring put EMU up by 17 with about 6 minutes to play. What happened next is nothing short of incredible; Buffalo rattled off 17 unanswered points including a last second, game tying field goal to force overtime. Overtime was where the game took off, as there were more points scored in the OT periods than there were in the entirety of regulation. I could sit and dissect every single play of overtime, but honestly...with eight overtimes to cover that could be a really lengthy read. You read that right, eight overtime periods which is an NCAA record, breaking the previous record of seven held by Arkansas and Kentucky.

The one overtime period I want to touch on is the 5th one. The 5th overtime was one of ineptitude as both teams missed ~30 yard field goals. EMU missed the first of the two, a 32 yarder that Dylan Mulder has hit consistently throughout the season. The second, was far more embarrassing as the kicker for Buffalo botched a 29 yard chip shot. Chris Creighton decided to use his timeout in order to ice the kicker as a last ditch effort. It payed off big time as the kicker missed about 6 feet to the left.

This was definitely a record breaking game as there was one more player who had a record day. That player, would be Senior TE Tyreese Russel. Russel, as you may recall had an incredible day just last week against the rival Chippewas. He topped that day with an even better one tonight as he went for 197 yards receiving and an EMU record for Receiving Touchdowns in a Game with five. He breaks the record of four previously held by two other players. Russel is having another excellent season, tallying 35 receptions for 464 yards and 7 touchdowns. He was named as the player of the game by EA Sports and it certainly is hard to refute considering he absolutely dominated regulation.

Overtime was dominated by the tailbacks for EMU. Between Brumsfield and Thorin, there were 30 carries for 140 yards and 4 touchdowns. Which may lead some to consider/wonder, where was stud back Bronson Hill in overtime? He tallied 121 yards on 21 touches in regulation before being sat in overtime with a nagging foot injury. Hill has struggled with this throughout the season as he's sat in the fourth quarter or seen limited action in the fourth quarter in 4 of the 6 EMU games. The game saw Freshman tailback Garin Thorne assert his power with three goal line touchdowns in overtime. Thorne hasn't seen the field much this season but is set to be the starter next season with Hill and Brumsfield graduating.

The game has received national attention as ESPN switched to covering it in the 5th overtime, and EMU's clinching touchdown was the highest rated moment in College Football on Saturday. Is this because there weren't many premier matchups? Or is it because EMU's game definitely interested the masses with a record at stake? Whatever the reason this was a great moment for the EMU program as national exposure should definitely help them. EMU travels to K-Zoo to play the hated Broncos next week. Maybe this win could give EMU the momentum that they need to clinch the Michigan MAC Cup this season. Let's close this one out with some facts about this game:

-EMU scored 86 points in this game, they scored 198 ALL of last season.

-Also, the 86 points they scored today is more than Clemson has scored ALL SEASON (84).

-Buffalo scored 80 points in a loss, which sets a record for the most points scored in a loss. The record was previously held by North Texas who scored 62 points in a 74-62, 2007 loss to Navy.

-EMU's rushing total today of 304 yards was the most Rushing Yards Buffalo has allowed all season, and is more than they allowed in four of their five games combined (287) (if you throw out a blowout loss to Clemson in which they allowed 260+ yards rushing.)

-Joe Licata attempted 80 passes in this game, which is 9 passes short of the record held by Washington State's Connor Halliday. On the flip side, his 53 completions are 5 short of a single-game record held by EMU alum Andy Schmitt.

"Great win for our guys, we needed it. But I will say that we need to tighten up on defense. 99.9% of the time you lose when you give up 80 points, but our offense was unstoppable today."

- Chris Creighton on the victory

Nice couple of wins there. 8 overtimes is crazy I don't think I've ever played more than three haha. Good luck on the rest of the season!
