Following!

What offensive system are you running? Did you sim or play out the first season? To see Martinez throwing that many TDs is stunning considering that his legs are far and away much more dangerous than his arm.

I'm running with Nebraska's base offense, and will be operating out of shotgun/pistol most of the time. I really like to spread the defense out, and it's pretty similar to how Nebraska runs things. And yeah, I was shocked seeing Martinez had 39 touchdowns after I simmed it, it was crazy haha. Thanks for checking in!

I'll be posting the game tonight, had a family situation yesterday.

Re: Go Big Red | Nebraska Cornhuskers Football

No. 9 Nebraska Looks Good In Season Opener
By James Massengale - huskers.com

The Nebraska Cornhuskers made their highly anticipated return to Memorial Stadium on Saturday against the Florida Atlantic Owls on Saturday, and for the most part, lived up the hype. Tommy Armstrong took the field as the starting quarterback, ending months of speculation on who would replace Martinez. Armstrong started off the game on fire, completing his first nine passes. The Cornhuskers were never in true danger of losing, and looked dominant in spurts on offense, but the defense was shaky at times.

"We're going to stress that this week." Bo Pelini said after Saturday's 45-21 win. "We have to make sure we get our kids in the right place to make plays and get them in position to succeed. Giving up all those yards, that's on us coaches."

He was very pleased with Tommy Armstrong's debut, also.

"Tommy was great. He had the two picks, but it was just a case of him trying to do too much and making a bad read and a bad throw. He'll get those kinks worked out for Miami next week." Pelini said of the sophomore. "Johnny [Stanton] was also great when he came in. It's been fun to see both of them grow in the past few weeks."

Armstrong threw for 174 yards and a touchdown and added 112 rushing yards and another two scores. He looked very calm when given time to sit in the pocket, and most of the game the offensive line gave him more than enough time. Stanton came in on the last two series and connected on both of his pass attempts, while also scrambling for a 5 yard gain.

Ameer Abdullah was his normal self, picking up over 120 yards on 20 carries. He got into the endzone twice, as well.

"It was good to get out there and get back into the flow of things. FAU was a pretty good team, so we're glad to get a nice win like that. Now, we're just focusing on Miami. It's exciting whenever you have a ranked team coming into Memorial, everyone on campus is fired up. Looking forward to Saturday."

That was the message after the game: Miami. This game has been regarded as one of the more important non - conference games in 2014, and it will go a long way to helping the Cornhuskers show last year wasn't a fluke. Defensive back Jonathon Rose, a transfer from Auburn, talked about the Hurricanes in the post game.

"They've got some weapons down there, so I'm looking forward to it. Anytime you get to go up against a guy like [Duke] Johnson, it's exciting. You can show that, as a defense, you're one of the best in the nation. So we're looking forward to it." Rose stated.

The Cornhuskers will take on the Hurricanes at 7 P.M. next Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

Re: Go Big Red | Nebraska Cornhuskers Football

Coach Pelini, Huskers look to Miami
By James Massengale - huskers.com

"What's one thing about Miami that, when you look at their film from last season, will give you the most trouble?"

"That running back they've got. Johnson? Yeah, he's special. He's so quick and shifty, that if he gets into the second level, you've got a big problem. They also have a pretty good amount of talent coming back up front, so we've gotta be able to fight off blocks and make plays on him in the backfield."

"How do you think Tommy did in his first start, and where do you want him to make the most improvements as the season plays out?"

"I thought he was great. He had the two picks, but that was him getting too greedy and trying to do too much. Throwing off his back foot and trying to force stuff in there; that's correctable. He made the right reads most of the game, and he was great when he ran the ball. Those two plays he made to score were great."

"What about Ameer? He looked very good."

"That was no surprise. You know what you're gonna get with him. He's a hard worker and hard runner. He's going to have a great year. I think Saturday was just a glimpse of what he's capable of."

"Do you think Miami has an advantage with this being their first game, opposed to you having played already?"

"Some might think it is, but at the end of the day, you still have to come out and play football. We got through week one unscathed, as far as injuries go, so we're excited to play a team like Miami. Whether or not it's their first game or not doesn't change the fact that we get to go play a fine football team in primetime."

"The defense seemed to struggle at times against the pass, have you made that a point of emphasis this week at practice?"

"That was our fault as coaches. [FAU] brought out some stuff we weren't expecting and it threw our guys off. We have to correct that, and that's what we, as coaches, have been doing during meetings."

Re: Go Big Red | Nebraska Cornhuskers Football

Turnovers, Injuries Doom Huskers Against Miami
By James Massengale - huskers.com

The Nebraska Cornhuskers and Miami Hurricanes met at primetime on ESPN, and the game lived up to the hype. Almost.

The Cornhuskers raced out to a 21-0 lead over the Hurricanes, and it looked as though the Huskers would run away with this game. However, the 24th ranked team in the country cut it it 24-14 by halftime, as a quick score right before the half made it a one possession game, with Nebraska tacking on a field goal as time expired. Bo Pelini was happy with the way the team played in the first half.

"We fought hard to get down field and get in field goal range in 30 or so seconds. I was proud of Tommy for leading us down the field like he did. He just has to cut down on his mistakes." Said Pelini following the game. "We can't lose games because we turn the ball over. That can't happen."

Armstrong, Jr. threw three interceptions, but two of those were at the fault of the receiver, with one hitting Jamaal Turner's hands and the other being because of an apparent lack of communication. The Cornhuskers also fumbled the ball away three times.

"It was just one of those days. After the first quarter, at least." Said Armstrong, who was banged up and had to leave the game in the fourth. "I'll be fine." Armstrong said when asked of his injury. "Just had the wind knocked out of me."

Johnny Stanton IV came into the game, and performed nicely, but ended up straining his Achilles, which will force him to sit until Big Ten Play starts. This forced the Cornhuskers to burn the redshirt of their freshman quarterback, Travis Slaughter.

Ameer Abdullah was a very, very bright spot for the Cornhuskers offense. The senior had 184 yards and averaged over 7 yards a carry. His counterpart for the Hurricanes, Duke Johnson, had just over 134 yards. But the real story of the day for the Cornhuskers was their defense. New starter Ryan Williams tossed 5 touchdowns and just under 300 yards. The Cornhuskers were burned for touchdowns of 29, 59, and 80(!) yards throughout the course of the game. They had three sacks, but overall, the defense failed to get pressure on Williams and it showed.

The Huskers do not have much time to sulk over this loss, however, as a trip to Fresno, California awaits Nebraska. The 20th ranked Bulldogs will be waiting, and it will be another late start on ESPN for the Cornhuskers. (ESPN2, ABC, or ESPN3 - 9 P.M. ET)

Re: Go Big Red | Nebraska Cornhuskers Football

Abdullah, Nebraska look to next game
By James Massengale - huskers.com

The Nebraska Cornhuskers struggled against the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday, giving the ball away six times and giving up a 21 point lead to lose 38-31. However, senior running back Ameer Abdullah did not struggle, as he nearly racked up 200 yards. It is one of the reasons he is shooting up draft boards and Heisman leader boards so early in the year.

"It's nice to be recognized, but we lost. I'll take a win over stats any day of the week." Said Abdullah, during the post-practice press conference on Wednesday. "We have to learn to take care of the ball and take care of leads. Myself included."

Coach Bo Pelini shared the same sentiment. "We need to finish games. Scoring 21 in the first, and then finishing the game with 31; that's unacceptable. It's unacceptable for these guys as players, for the coaches and I, and it is unacceptable for us as a program."

"I've got to play like I know I can. My turnovers are hurting the team's chances to win. I have to be smarter and make better decisions if I want to help the team win football games." said Tommy Armstrong. When asked if his injury will limit him in the future, he had this to say.

"I'll be fine. I'll be good to go Saturday. Just a little 'boo-boo.'"

"Boo-boo" or not, Nebraska needs Armstrong to play better. He has thrown 5 interceptions in 2 games this year. Taylor Martinez only three 3 in 13 games last year.

It doesn't get any easier for the Huskers, as they travel to Fresno State to take on the 25th ranked Fresno State Bulldogs. Fresno State is coming off one of its best years in program history, but the loss of Derek Carr(who now plays for the Cleveland Browns) will make it a less daunting task for Nebraska.

"We have to come out and perform better." Said defensive coordinator John Papuchis. "We can't let the offense down like we did on Saturday. We need to get more stops."

Re: Go Big Red | Nebraska Cornhuskers Football

Armstrong, Bell lead Huskers to win
By James Massengale - huskers.com

Relief.

That was the look on Tommy Armstrong's face after Saturday's game against Fresno State. He had his best game of the year, completing 20/31 passes for three touchdowns and 255 yards. But the best statistic of the game was 0. There were no turnovers for Armstrong and the Cornhuskers, who beat Fresno State 24-14.

"We're really proud of him and the offense. They were efficient and did just enough for us to win the game. We'll take it." Said Tim Beck. "It wasn't flashy, but it worked. We want him to be efficient and that's exactly what he did."

Ameer Abdullah struggled throughout the game, and was seen having possible cramps on the sideline in the 3rd quarter. He only had 46 yards rushing and 33 yards receiving, his lowest amount of yards from scrimmage since his freshman year. However, he scored two touchdowns on his only two receptions of the game that gave the Huskers leads of 10-0 and 17-7, respectively.

Kenny Bell was a big help, too. The senior receiver had his first break game in his somewhat quiet 2014 campaign, hauling in 10 receptions for 136 yards and one touchdown. He was Armstrong's safety blanket on numerous third downs throughout the game and had a few big plays as well. Bell caught a 13 yard pass for a touchdown that put the Cornhuskers up by 24-7 in the fourth quarter. Brandon Harwell added 5 catches for 33 yards.

"We just wanted to come out and play well. Last week left a bad taste in our mouths and we just wanted to prove that we're still a good football team. I think we did that." Bell said following Saturday's game.

"It was definitely better than last week." said coach Pelini. "We're not there yet but today was an important game. Now we need to get ready for McNeese State."

The Cornhuskers will take on McNeese State on Saturday at Memorial Stadium at 12:00 EST. (Big Ten Network, BTN2GO)
