WEEK 2 RECAP

(1-0)

AGGIES TAKE ON JAGUARS IN SUNBELT SHOWDOWN!!

GAME RECAP

A Fumble and INT thrown inside the redzone keep NMSU off the scoreboard, but the Defense continues to play great as they hold USA to just 2 FG's (27 yd and 40 yd).

RB B. Betancourt puts the Aggies on top early in the 2nd Quarter with a 1 yd TD run to make it (7-6). Then after a huge stop on 4th down, FR J. Brock leads the Aggies to yet another score as he hits A. Franklin on a 7 yd TD pass to make it (14-6). But on the insuing kickoff, K. Houston takes the kick 98 yds for the score, and USA coverts the 2pt conversion to make it (14-14).

With 58 seconds to play Brock goes to the air and hits fellow FR J. Berry on a 35 yd pass. Berry catches it over 2 defenders and drags both into the endzone to make it (21-14). USA however wasn't going to give up so quickly though, and with 1 second to play in the half, B. McKee hits his 3rd FG of the game (24 yd) to make it (21-17) at the half.

For FR K. Brock the 3rd Quarter is something he would like to forget. The Freshman throws 2 more INT's to make it 3 and the day plus his fumble. Not the greatest start for his young career. Lucky for him the Aggies Defense comes up big as they hold USA to just 1 score, a 2 yd run by QB B. Bridge making it (24-21) as we head into the 4th.

NMSU would take the early lead in the 4th as RB B. Betancourt scores again on a 1 yd run, but Johnson misses the EP making it (27-24). After another turnover on downs, NMSU has a chance to extend the lead but M. Johnson misses the FG which sets up a South Alabama score as QB B. Bridge takes it in from 1 yd out to make it (31-27).

Brock leads the Aggies out onto the field, needing a touchdown. Already with 400 yds passing on the day, Brock continues to fire away finding his fellow FR J. Berry and back to back throws. Then after a 10 yd completion to A. Franklin its back to Berry as he ties the New Mexico State school record with his 16th catch of the day. But 2 more incomplete passes and a 4 yd run sets up the Aggies for a 4th and goal situation with 52 seconds to play.

Down by 4, Coach Martin has no choice but to go for it and Coach Chang calls in the play. Shotgun formation with 5 WR's. Brock drops back, rolls right and fires to #5 WR J. Bowen on a slant pattern. Bowen is hit on the goaline but falls forward for the score!!!! The XP is good making it (34-31) with 45 seconds to play.

USA would manage to move the ball to midfield after converting on a 4th and 2, but back to back completions leaves it 3rd and 10 from the 50 with just 4 seconds to play. QB B. Bridge has just 1 play left. With 4 WR's to the right, Bridge launches the ball toward the endzone. NMSU is ready, as the defense bats down the pass to secure the win.

FINAL SCORE NMSU-34 USA-31

Coach Chang
Quote:
"Another huge day for Kirk, minus the 4 turnovers. This game would've been completely different. Again I felt like he did great at spreading the ball around, yet it appears he might have found a new #1 target. I thought Berry did a great job of finding the open spots out of the slot and then made some big runs after the catch as well"

Nice start to the season, at least it'll appear that way in the win column. Hope Brock can keep the turnovers down before it bites NMSU in the butt.

Well with a Freshman QB who is throwing over 40 times a game, I have a feeling the turnovers are going to keep coming, or at least they have in my next 2 games, but I was surprised at how well the defense has played, so far they are the true reason why we are winning our games.

WEEK 3-6 RECAP

AGGIES DROP 3 IN A ROW AFTER FAST START!!

After overcoming some turnovers my FR QB J. Brock with a run stuffing defense that didn't allow over 100 yds rushing in either win, the New Mexico State Agggies ran into some tough times starting in Week 3 against UAB and it didn't end there as NMSU drops both rivalry games losing the I-10 Battle as well as the Clash of the Rio Grande Here is recaps of the 3 weeks.

WEEK 3

NSMU traveled to Alabama to take on UAB in a Sun Belt matchup. 2 costly INt's by QB J. Brock led to the Aggies trailing 28-14 at the half leading to his benching and our first long look at RS FR King Davis III.

"The King" played okay in his first real action as he completed 12/24 passes for 188 yds and a TD, but it wasn't enough to overcome the performance of UAB QB J. Brown. Brown completed 23/39 passes for 376 yds and 5 TD's as UAB wins the game.

FINAL SCORE UAB-42 NMSU-26

WEEK 4

The Aggies traveled to El Paso Texas to take on UTEP in the "Battle of the I-10". Coach Doug Martin announced before the game that FR QB J. Brock would indeed make the start at QB.

Brock looked good actually as he opens the game with with a TD drive that ends with RB B. Betancourt catching a 2 yd pass and NSMU would actually lead (17-10) at the half as Brock throws another TD pass to TE A. Dean (17 yds).

No turnovers took place in the 3rd, but Brock struggled to move the ball which leads to UTEP taking a (20-17) lead going into the 4th.

NMSU manages to tie the game (20-20) as M. Johnson hits a 37 yd FG and then with less then 3 minutes in the game ties it again (27-27) as RB B. Betancourt scores from 12 yds out to force OT.

Brock however fails to move the ball in OT and Johnson follows it up with a missed FG, leaving UTEP needing just a made FG to win the game. Turns out they didn't need it, because J. Showers hits I. Hamilton on a 25 yd TD pass instead.

Brock finished the game 17/44 with 211 yds and 2 TD's, he also lead the team with 53 yds rushing. #1 WR A. Franklin had 8 rec for 118 yds

UTEP managed to get 271 yds rushing as both RB A. Jones (27 carries 144 yds 1 TD) and QB J. Showers (23 carries 108 yds 1 TD) both go for over 100 yds. Showers also ended 13/23 passing with 167 yds and 2 TD's.

FINAL SCORE UTEP-34 NMSU-27

WEEK 6

This game and loss was more then just on the field. NMSU had 10 players come to Las Cruces for a visit including the New Mexico State High School Football POY. 4* RB James Fowler Ranked the #14 HB in the recruiting class, Fowler came to the game the Lobos as his #1 choice, but the Aggies were a close 2nd (trailing by 270 pts). After the game that was still the same. Rated a 77 Gem prospect, Fowler would be a lock to start all 4 years at RB for the Aggies, but with the new Run and Shoot Offense of Coach Chang that throws the ball 40+ times a games, Fowler is going to be a tough sell.

GAME RECAP

2 1st Half INT's by QB J. Brock both being "Pick 6's" leads to New Mexico taking a (24-3) lead early in the game. Pick #1 was returned 28 yds well #2 was returned 87 yds (a school record for UNM). Brock was sent to the bench his day was done (10/19 142 yds 2 INT).

Enter King Davis III. Davis would play great in the 2nd Quarter as he leads 3 scoring drives including a TD pass to J. Bowen from 13 yds out and a 18 yd run to the 1 yd line that sets up a B. Betancourt score with 28 seconds left to make it (31-24), but the Lobos went crazy as QB C. Gautshce goes to the air converting on a 48 yd bomb that sets up a 45 yd FG as time expires to make it (34-24).

Davis opens the 2nd half with his team down by 10, and quickly throws a INT, but the Defense steps up and forces a turnover as well giving the Aggies a 2nd chance and B. Betancourt delivers as he scores his 2nd TD of the day to make it (34-31) New Mexico manages their own rushing TD though to make it (41-31) as we head to the 4th.

King then hits J. Berry on a 10 yd TD pass to make it (41-38) early in the 4th, and another Aggie defensive stop gives NMSU a chance to take the lead, but a Davis INT gives the ball back and the Lobos take advantage of it scoring on a 9 yd pass (48-38). Down by 2 scores Davis is forced to go to the air yet again and what are the odds when throwing 70 passes (team total, 51 for Davis) that the ball will end up in the opponents arms. Pretty high, because "The King" throws INT #3 which leads yet again to another Lobo score (RB D. Pressley scores from 3 yds out) to make it (55-38) with less then 2 minutes to play.

Down by 17, the Aggies use the ground game that had been MIA all night, was Davis picks up 2 first downs with his feet and after nice 54 yd bomb to A. Franklin who is tackled at the 2 yd line, Davis uses his feet 1 more time as he takes it in for the final score of the game.

King Davis ends the game 27/51 with 500 yds passing, 54 yds rushing 3 TD's (2 passing 1 rushing) and 3 INTs.

SR QB/WR Travaughn Colwell ends the game with a team high 14 rec for 231 yds. #1 WR A. Fraklin has 9 rec for 198 yds and FR J. Berry has 8 rec for 124 yds and 1 TD.

For the Lobos QB C. Gautsche is 19/36 for 415 yds with 3 TD and 1 INT.
RB J. Pressley has 28 carries for 122 yds and 2 scores.

FINAL SCORE UNM-55 NMSU-45

After the game Coach Doug Martin
Quote:
"To be honest with you at this point it's going to be a game time decision next week against ULM. I honestly don't know. I thought King played great in the 1st half and made some big throws in the 2nd half, but to be honest his 3 INT's kept us from winning the game. Yeah Brock is struggling too, but we sorta expected it. Our biggest issue isn't just our QB play, it's the fact we have pretty much abandoned the run. We can't be throwing the ball 70 times a game. If you do then the odds are high you will end up with some INT's no matter who is throwing the ball. Coach Chang and I will sit down this week and work on a new offensive game plan that will hopefully get us back to putting a W on the board."

WEEK 7-9 RECAP

AGGIES PLAYING .500 BALL

Rebounding from 3 straight loss's, the New Mexico State Aggies win 2 in a row including picking up their first win over a Top-25 program in Coach Martin/Chang's coaching career at NSMU. However with all the good things that happened over the month, the Aggies are still just 4-4 going into their Week 10 bye week, needing to win at least 3 of their last 4 games to probably get a invite to a bowl game.

Here is a recap of the 3 games played.

WEEK 7

The Aggies took on (1-4) ULM, with King Davis III taking over at QB making his first career start. Joining him in the starting lineup is another fellow RS FR, as RB. M. Washington takes over for SR B. Betancourt.

Coach Martin
Quote:
"After talking it over with Coach Chang we decided it would be best to try and get some more speed in the backfield. Brandon will still get some carries, but we want to see what Marquis can do for us."
It's also been learned that FR Punter M. Sutton will take over all kicking duties from SR M. Johnson. Johnson has missed several EP's this season as well as 2 huge FG's.

NMSU opens the game with a safety (2-0) Then after another huge defensive stop, King Davis finds #1 WR J. Brown for a huge 37 yd TD bomb to make it (9-0) and then a 36 yd FG by M. Sutton increases the lead to a 12-0 lead after the end of the 1st Quarter

Both Defenses shine in the 2nd Quarter as neither team finds the endzone but Sutton does manage to nail a 45 yd FG to make it (15-0) at the half.

ULM does manage to score in the 3rd and coverts the 2pt to make it (15-8) as we head to the 4th.

In the 4th King Davis finally finds a little bit of a grove with the offense as he scores on a 2 yd run (22-8), and then after another huge stop, "The King" hits T. Colwell on a 6 yd TD pass to finish off the War hawks.

FINAL SCORE NMSU-29 ULM-8

KEY PLAYERS

QB-"The King" finishes the game 18/51 for 204 yds with 2 TD and 1 INT passing and has 52 yds with 1 TD rushing.
RB- M. Washington has 59 yds on 16 carries in his first start
#2 WR J. Brown has a season high 9 rec for 113 yds and 1 score
QB/WR T Colwell has 5 rec for 56 yds and 1 TD

WEEK 8

ULL came into the game with a 5-0 start to the 2014 season as they climbed to #23 in the Polls, giving Coach Martin/Chang their first chance at knocking off a Top-25 program.

M. Washington starts out with a 4 yd run to make it (7-0) and M. Sutton hits a 30 yd FG to make it (10-0) as the Aggies start strong again behind a huge defensive effort.

ULL does manage to score on a 11 yd TD run by A. Harris to make it (10-7) at the half.

Davis opens the 2nd half hitting T. Colwell on a 11 yd TD pass to make it (17-7), and then LB A. Joyner returns a fumble 26 yds to make it (24-7). ULL battles back on a 7 yd run by RB A. Harris to make it (24-14) going into the 4th.

ULL would cut the lead to (24-21) as T. Broadway hits J. Robinson on a 8 yd pass, but another costly fumble gives the Aggies the ball late in the 4th and behind a solid run game involving Davis and Washington, New Mexico State runs out the clock for the win.

FINAL SCORE NMSU-24 ULL-21

KEY PLAYERS

QB "The King" ends the game 18/44 for 284 yds with 1 TD plus has 45 yds rushing.
RB M.Washington has 14 carries for 60 yds and a TD
#2 WR J. Brown is the leading man again with 13 rec and a season/career high 242 yds.

WEEK 9

So at (5-3) New Mexico State came into the Week 9 matchup with North Texas (4-3) looking for their 6th win making them bowl eligible, but the Mean Green had something else in mind.

GAME RECAP

What do you get when you cross something plain looking and something ugly? Plain Ugly!!!

0-0 after 1 quarter of play, NT explodes behind the play of backup QB A. McNulty. Replacing the injured B. Berglund, McNulty throws (3) 2nd Quarter TD’s (4 yd 49 yd and 3 yd) well New Mexico State manages just 3 pts on a 26 yd FG by M. Sutton (27-3)

King Davis III had been struggling all game 6/20 for 45 yds with 1 INT, and Coach Martin had seen enough after the RS FR threw his 2nd INT of the game setting up a McNulty 4 yd TD run that made it (28-3). Re-Enter FR J. Brock. Brock is the spark that NMSU needs as he throws a 5 yd TD pass to fellow FR J. Berry to make it (28-10), then after McNulty’s only mistake in the game (INT), the Aggies add a FG by Sutton 27 yd to make it (28-13) as we head to the 4th.

McNulty opens up the 4th making up for his previous INT by throwing his 4th TD hitting RB P. Pegram on a 20 yd screen pass to make it (35-13) and then after a turnover on downs backup RB A. Zimmerman scores on a 5 yd run to make it (42-13) with less then a minute to play. Brock tries to go to the air and see what he could make happen, but 2 costly drops cause yet another turnover on downs, as North Texas ends the win streak and hands the Aggies their 4th loss of the year.

FINAL SCORE NT-42 NMSU-13

KEY PLAYERS
QB J. Brock finishes the game 8/19 for 103 yds with the 1 TD, well also picking up 25 yds rushing.
RB M.Washington finishes with just 31 yds and 12 carries (2.5 Avg)
#1 WR A. Franklin leads the team with 5 rec for 81 yds.
FR ATH J. Berry had just 2 rec for 15 yds and the 1 score.

Coach Martin
Quote:
"Well looks like we are back to the drawing board, I don’t know what to think. In our first 2 games, our Offense and Defense were unstoppable. Now we can’t do anything on either side of the ball. Our bye week couldn’t have come at a better time, maybe the Run and Shoot isn't the best fit for our current players. Maybe it's time to see what T. Colwell can do for us at QB, I don't know, or maybe we just need to suck it up and battle with Brock at the helm."

Yeah will be interesting to see how it plays out. I have my eye on a 4* ATH recruit who could be a great fit at RB if I can't sign Fowler, but there is also a 4* LT and a 4* OLB who havn't gotten any scholarship offers yet either. I rather know I was going to land Fowler and go after the LT who would be huge for our program but we will see.
