Re: Worst to First - Kansas City Chiefs (Madden25 CFM)

Pre-season Week 1: W21-14 @Saints

The Chiefs won their first preseason game against the New Orleans Saints. After a rough start, Alex Smith looked more and more confortable, drive after drive, throwing a touchdown to Ryan Swope in the second quarter. Coach Andy Reid said that Smith will only play the first quarter during the next game, and if that goes well, then he will let the other quarterbacks fight for the backup jobs. An unexpected really good performance came from wide receiver Johnny Knox: the ex-Bear piled up 71 yards and a touchdown on 4 receptions, managing to get open most of the times. Also, backup QB Chase Daniel threw for a perfect 6/6, 100 yards and a touchdown (to Knox). As far as the rookies go, defensive end Mike Catapano showed really nice rushing skill, hurring the quarterback and sacking him one time, while undrafted cornerback Marcus Cooper recorded an interception and helped Pat Lee getting one deflecting a pass. Strong Safety Quintin Demps also got an interception. Next week the other players that are now in the 3rd string on the depth chart will get a chance to play in the final quarter and try to secure themselves a spot on the 53-man roster.

Pre-season Week 2: L21-40 vs 49ers

At the end of the first quarter the score was tied 7-7, then the backups came in, and it began! San Francisco was unstoppable on the ground, while Tim Tebow made something happen with both his arm and his legs. Our linebackers could stop runningback Kendall Hunter, who ran for 160 yards and 2 touchdowns. Even if the pass defense was decent, the Chiefs MUST stop the run, backups or not. On the offensive side of the ball, Alex Smith didn't had to go too far to score the first touchdown of the game and securing his starting job, thanks to a big return by Dexter McCluster, who will definitely be the starting kick returner this season. Both Chase Daniel and Tyler Bray threw a touchdown, to rookies Travis Kelce and Knile Davis respectively. Kelce ended the game with 2 touchdown, the first coming from Smith. Two cuts are expected before the next game and coach Reid knows already who they will be.

Down to 65

After the second preseason game, two players were cut to get down to 65. The players that did not make the team are:

WR Chad Hall, 27
TE Thomas Gafford, 30

Not only Hall lacks size and speed, but he also showed that he has problems catching the ball too. This was and easy cut.
Gafford saw limited playing time as the Chiefs mainly used him as a backup fullback in these two games. Also, it looks like the tight ends that will make the team have already been decided. The fact that he's 30 years old didn't help him either.

Pre-season Week 3: L17-10 @Steelers

Another loss in the preseason makes the Chiefs record 1-2. On one side, the defense played a lot better, even if they started giving up some yards when the 3rd stringers came on the field, and 4th round pick Sanders Commings picked off his first pass of the preseason. On the other, however, the offense wasn't able to produce and gave up the ball two times on two forced throws in the endzone (one by Daniel, who left the game with a bruised sternum, and the other by Bray), both picked by steelers cornerback William Gay. 3rd round pick Knile Davis had to leave the game after just one carry because of a dislocated shoulder, but more important, wide receiver Johnny Knox, who was having a really good preseason, suffered a partial PCL tear and he will need at least 5 weeks to recover. Coaches still don't know what they will do with him. The only touchdown of the game was thrown by the fourth quarterback of the team, Jerrod Johnson, who showed really good mobility and pocket awareness, to Junior Hemingway, who had a nice game. Finally, someone who is really making a name for himself is free agent acquisition Ryan Swope. Swope is impressing the coaching staff with his speed and agility, skills that help him gain a lot of yards after the catch. At this rate, he will definitely be one of those 6 receiver in the final roster.

Down to 59

After the third preseason game, 6 players were cut to get down to 59. The players that did not make the team are:

WR Johnny Knox, 26 (IR)
TE Dominique Jones, 25
DT Jaye Howard, 24
CB Ross Ventrone, 26
CB Ron Parker, 26
FS Husain Abdullah, 28

After a closer look, doctors said that Knox would need at least 8 weeks to recover from his injury, and because of the harsh competition at the receiver position, the Chiefs couldn't keep a vacant spot on their roster for an injury prone guy (he also suffered a minor injury in the firs preseason game). Jones was the fourth tigh end, and as said in the previous week, the 3 startes have already been decided. Howard and Ventrone were completely invisible in the preseason. Parker was decent, but with Pat Lee and rookie Marcus Cooper the team is good at the corner position. The shock was the announcement that safety Husain Abdullah was cut. the veteran safety didn't have a good preseason at all, being found out of coverage more often than not and giving up more than one touchdown. Rookie Sanders Commings is faster and better in coverage, that's why the organization decided to keep him as the backup safety.

Pre-season Week 4: L43-40 vs Packers

The Chiefs finish the preseason 1-3 after this close loss to the Green Bay Packer. Quarterback Scott Tolzien took control of the Kansas City defense, throwing for 4 touchdowns and 300+ yards. Jerrod Johnson started the last two quarters, but even if he finished with 8/11 for 153 yards, two of those three missed passes were crucial interceptions that costed the Chiefs a win. It will be tough to select th 3rd quarterback between him and Tyler Bray (who threw for 1 touchdown and one interception). The defense barely pressured Tolzien and the secondary couldn't stop the 5-receiver sets that the Packers were using. Runnigback Cyrus Gray will be the backup to Jamaal Charles, after another poor performance by rookie Knile Davis. As for the other position battles, the decision will be made after the last six cuts.

Down to 53

After the fourth preseason game, 5 players were cut to get down to the final 53 roster. The players that did not make the team are:

QB Tyler Bray, 21 (IR)
LG Rishaw Johnson, 24
MLB Joe Holland, 25
OLB Dezman Moses, 24
OLB Josh Martin, 21

After the game, doctors said that Bray pulled his groin and will have to miss at least 5 weeks, which made the decision about who to keep between him and Johnson a lot easier. Rishawn Johnson was beaten by Ricky Henry, as the third year guard showed really good blocking aven against the opposing starting defense. Holland managed to make it this far thanks to his speed, but poor tackling forced the organization to part ways with him. Moses was often pancaked by backup offensive linemen while Martin didn't really make an impact. So, here is the final roster!

Game Notes
First game of the season, not much to say. The Jaguars will start Chad Henne at quarterback. Their secondary looks really bad, but the linebackers led by Paul Posluszny can cover really well. If the defense can stop MJD, then the Chiefs will have a pretty easy win.

Prediction: 27-20 Chiefs
