Building a Powerhouse- West Virginia Mountaineers (NCAA 14)

Most of you know of the Tennessee Dynasty I did... I'm starting this one because my PS3 had a system error and the only way I could even access normal features on my PS3 was if I restored my PS3 to its original settings.. In other words I was forced to format my PS3 and lost all saved data.

So, here is my new dynasty, where I, a fictional coach by the name of Justin Johnson, will be taking control of the West Virginia Mountaineers. They currently have the 14th most wins out of all NCAA Division 1 football teams... They're also the school with the most wins WITHOUT a National Championship... So that is going to be my ultimate goal of this dynasty... To rebuild the current Mountaineers team and eventually bring a National Championship to Morgantown.

Dynasty Info:
Console: PS3
Quarters: 7 Minutes
Difficulty: All-American (may bump up to Heisman)
Rosters: Pudgee691
Sliders: Custom made

February 8, 2013: Dana Holgorsen Fired

Morgantown, W. VA -- In a surprising turn of events, West Virginia Athletic Director Oliver Luck has announced the departure of Dana Holgorsen.

The Mountaineers had one of the most dissappointing seasons in NCAA Football history. They were primed for one of the best seasons in school history... Led by star QB Geno Smith and All-American WR's Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey, the Mountaineers had one of the most prolific offenses in the country. They were 5-0 and ranked #5 in the nation including wins over #25 Baylor and at Texas in front of 101,000+ fans... Then everything came crashing down.

The Mountaineers then went on a 5 game losing streak and ended up finishing the season with a 7-6 record and lost their bowl game (Pinstripe Bowl) to Syracuse.

Where does Oliver Luck turn to for the next coach?

Preferably an up and coming coach who can work with players for an Air Raid system and a 3-4 defense.

February 17, 2013: WVU Hires Justin Johnson

Morgantown, W. Va -- Well, if you asked me 9 days ago, if you told me Justin Johnson would be hired at WVU I would've called you crazy. WVU didn't hire the proven coach fans wanted, but they definitely hired an up and coming coach as Johnson has had previous, successful coordinator stops at Wisconsin and Louisville.

Johnson is a fiery coach who will get the best of his players. He's also a great recruiter who should bring in some top notch talent to West Virginia... Which is exactly what the program needs.

His first task should be trying to keep the 2013 recruiting class to stay in school and not transfer away because of the departure of Holgorsen. He should also get right to work scouting this years team because of all the question marks.

The Mountaineers will lose their 3 biggest playmakers on offense in Geno Smith, Tavon Austin, and Stedman Bailey and will most likely turn to transfers in Clint Trickett and Charles Sims to take over the QB and HB positions this year.

A key for Johnson is to hire a great Defensive Coordinator. The Mountaineers defense was atrocious last year and needs to improve tremendously or else it will be a long season for Johnson and the Mountaineers... He will be introduced as the Head Coach at 3:00 P.M EST.

Post Game Press Conference Quotes:

Question: How pleased were you with the performance today?

Johnson: Great, great game by the guys today, I couldn't be happier. We started off hot and never looked back. We played just about a perfect game. Clint went out and did a great job running the offense. Charles did a good job running the ball. Our receivers were open and made it easy for our QB's. Our defense was stellar all game and I believe we ended up with 7 sacks, and 3 of them coming from Dozie. Very pleased at the way they played today.

Question: Is there anything you want to fix for next weeks game at Oklahoma?
Johnson: Well, all week our goal was to get 3 or more sacks on defense, which we did... But also to force 2 turnovers. And as you all know, we didn't get any. In order to beat a very good Oklahoma team next week we must get some turnovers.

Question: Dreamius Smith got injured in the 2nd Quarter and didn't return...Any update on him?
Johnson: Dreamius was diagnosed with a mild concussion. He will be 100% when we play Oklahoma next week.

Question: In your first press conference, you said you were going to air it out and get some long pass plays. You did that at times, but why stray from the passing game and run the ball 40+ times?
Johnson: We all knew the passing game was a strength of ours on offense throughout fall camp. So, we kept running the ball to let our linemen get used to the new blocking scheme and I think they did a good job today. We also didn't want to use many plays so we have some new stuff to bring out next Saturday.

Question: What was one thing that stuck out to you today?
Johnson: Ronald Carswell's kick off return for a TD. We strive to have a great special teams unit, so it's great to see him take one to the house. As soon as I saw him hit the hole around the 30 I knew he was gone. Carswell is a great player and will only progress as the season continues.

Johnson (in closing): Thanks for coming out and supporting us today.

Game Summary

The 1st quarter was rather quiet. On West Virginia's first drive Trickett tried to throw a bomb to Kevin White for a Touchdown but it was intercepted by Aaron Colvin. Oklahoma then ended up going 3 and out, and once West Virginia got the ball back they did the same. Then, Oklahoma finally got on the board when Blake Bell threw a fade to LaColtan Bester in the back right corner of the endzone to take a 7-0 lead.

2nd Quarter: On the kickoff Ronald Carswell returned the ball 69 yards to set West Virginia up with GREAT field position. The Mountaineers would score a TD as Trickett found Devonte Mathis wide open in the back right corner of the endzone to tie it up at 7-7. Oklahoma then ended the half with 2 field goals to make it 13-7 going into halftime.

3rd Quarter: Oklahoma got the ball to start the 2nd half, but Blake Bell was picked off by Ishmael Banks who set West Virginia up on the 22 yard line. The very next play, Charles Sims took the HB sweep running to his left, made a man miss, and got a GREAT block by Kevin White and scored to make it 14-13. Oklahoma then drove right down the field and scored on an 8 yard TD catch by LaColtan Bester making it his 2nd of the game. Oklahoma then tried to go for 2 to make it a 21-14 game, but Williams was stuffed at the 1 yard line by Kyle Rose. Because they failed to get the conversion the score was 19-14. West Virginia got the ball and drove right down the field and got a clutch 3rd down catch by Carswell to keep the drive alive. Later in the drive, on 3rd and goal, Charles Sims took the HB Toss running to his left and scored untouched. Then, West Virginia went for two and got it as Charles Sims ran it right up the middle to make it 22-19. On the next drive Oklahoma RB Damien Williams took the handoff and everyone thought he was tackled, but he landed on WVU Freshman linebacker Darrien Howard, and took off for the 46 yard TD. The play was reviewed and confirmed... Touchdown Sooners to make the game 26-22.

4th Quarter: West Virginia answered right back as Trickett hit Kevin White for an 8 yard TD making the score 29-26 in favor of WVU. The Sooners answered right back as Blake Bell hit Durron Neal for a 7 yard TD. That was Neal's only catch of the game and made the score 33-29. Then, the Mountaineers marched right back down the field and scored on yet another 8 yard TD catch, this time by Ronald Carswell making the score 36-33 with 2:04 left in the game. Once Oklahoma got the ball, Bell was sacked to bring up a 3rd and 17. But, Bell hit running back Damien Williams on a screen that went for 42 yards and set the Sooners up deep inside WVU territory. The Sooners settled for a field goal after great pass breakups by WVU safeties Karl Joseph and Darwin Cook. That made the score 36-36 with 0:46 left in the game. On the Mountaineers next drive it was 3rd and 12 and Trickett hit Mario Alford on a post over the middle which was good for 34 yards. Then, Dreamius Smith had a couple carries total 28 yards which put the Mountaineers in great position for a field goal. Josh Lambert nailed the 31 yard field goal with 0:05 left... But wait... Oklahoma returned the ball to their 45 yard line on the squib kick and was tackled with 0:01 left. On a desperation heave to the endzone, the ball was tipped and caught by Jaz Reynolds, but he was tackled at the 3 yard line JUST short of the endzone, which ended the game!

I also recorded some of the highlights, and will upload a highlight video after the Georgia State game because as of now with the William and Mary and Oklahoma games, it's only 2 minutes :P

Game Notes
"This game won't be close. It's becoming more obvious that West Virginia has an explosive offense and Georgia State will not be able to stop them. Georgia State's 2 losses were BAD losses both to FCS opponents..... at home. They lost 21-31 to Samford and then 14-42 to Chattanooga. I think it's safe to assume West Virginia will be 3-0 going into their Week 4 game against Maryland. I predict West Virginia wins, 45-10". -Kirk Herbstreit

Game Summary:

1st Quarter: The first score came on West Virginia's first play from scrimmage. Charles Sims took the handoff made one man miss and then dashed 51 yards for a TD. Georgia State then fumbled which was picked up by WVU Linebacker Brandon Golson. On the 2nd play of the drive Trickett threw a 34 yard TD pass to Alford who was WIDE open in the endzone so WVU took a 14-0 lead. Georgia State then went 3 and out and after a couple Charles Sims runs, Trickett threw a bullet pass to Devonte Mathis running a post over the middle and he scored to make the game 21-0.

2nd Quarter: West Virginia got the ball back after a Georgia State 3 and out once again and after driving the ball down the field Dreamius Smith made a nice cut to get into the endzone on a 6 yard run to make the score 28-0. After a long Georgia State drive which resulted in a punt, West Virginia drove down the field again, but settled for a field goal as Josh Lambert made a 26 yard field goal from the right hash mark. So the score was 31-0 West Virginia going into halftime.

3rd Quarter: WVU got the ball to begin the half and took it straight down the field thanks to some key Charles Sims' runs. But, Clint Trickett hit Ronald Carswell for a 5 yard TD catch in the back left corner of the endzone as Carswell did a great job of getting one foot in bounds. That made the score 38-0 West Virginia. Georgia State did a good job of marching down field, but just as it seemed like Georgia State was guaranteed points, Georgia State QB McLane was intercepted by Ishmael Banks on the 8 yard line. WVU took advantage and eventually scored a TD on a 1 yard run by Charles Sims who took it right up the middle on 3rd and goal. That made the score 45-0. Georgia State again made 3 first downs, but was forced to punt. Once WVU got the ball back, they settled for another field goal from Josh Lambert. Only this time it was a 31 yarder from the left hash mark. That made the score 48-0.

4th Quarter: As the Offensive Line for Georgia State started getting tired, on their next possession WVU forced a 3 and out thanks to 3 sacks from Dozie Ezemma and Will Clarke (Ezemma had 2). WVU would then drive down the field and score on a 5 yard TD run by 3rd string running back Dustin Garrison, who did a nice job finding a very small crease to get into the endzone. Then, with about a minute remaining Georgia State finally got into the endzone on a 7 yard TD pass. Which made the score 55-7.

Game Notes
"This one is a toss up. West Virginia's offense has done great, but they have played an FCS team and a FBS team who has lost twice to FCS teams. Maryland on the other hand barely squeaked out a win vs. Old Dominion at home, and had an ugly loss at UConn. I'm going to say West Virginia's offense will be the deciding factor and West Virginia will win 27-21". -Kirk Herbstreit
