Re: Oakland Exodus

2014: Week 10
Denver Broncos @ Oakland Raiders

Peyton Rules the Air in Oakland

Matt McGloin left the game with a dislocated shoulder in the third quarter of a losing effort against the Broncos.

Whatever momentum the Raiders had gained by upsetting Seattle last week, it wasn't enough to overcome Peyton Manning and the overwhelming Denver Broncos, who are in a tight race for the AFC West with the equally dominant Kansas City Chiefs. Manning did what he knows best -- pass aggressively and often, bringing in over 300 yards on the way to a division win in Oakland.

The Raiders brought a few new wrinkles to their gameplan this week, and it worked early on in the game. Seeking to find more ways to get mileage out of high-performing WR Denarius Moore, Dennis Allen lined him up under center in a pair of Wildcat formations, and on the opening drive he was able to use the Broncos' confusion to his advantage and make an outside run into the endzone to give Oakland an early 7-0 edge.

That steam was short-lived, though, and the Raiders couldn't find the end zone for the rest of the first half, while Denver racked up 19 points by halftime through a combination of a strong kicking game and Manning's aerial attack. The Raiders' luck only got worse in the third quarter when McGloin was hit hard while scrambling for a first down, dislocating his shoulder and sitting out the remainder of the game. Derek Carr stepped in to finish the game and capped his first drive with a short touchdown pass to James Jones, making the game seem within reach once again.

Derek Carr tallied a touchdown pass on his first drive, but struggled for the remainder of the game.

Manning didn't let that last long, as he went deep on the very next series and tossed a deep pass to Demaryius Thomas, who sped past the entire Oakland secondary for an 80-yard touchdown, deflating whatever remained of an Oakland comeback.

From there, the Raiders struggled to produce for the rest of the game, and the fourth quarter passed quietly as the team dropped a home game and fell under .500 once again. It remains to be determined if McGloin's injury will keep him out next week against the Chargers, and the team has not announced if Matt Schaub or Derek Carr will take his place if he's forced to miss a week of play.

Re: Oakland Exodus

2014: Week 11
Oakland Raiders @ San Diego Chargers

Carr, Moore Take the Lead in Second Win over Chargers

WR Denarius Moore made plays all over the field to help the Raiders go 2-0 against the Chargers.

Matt McGloin sat out the latter portion of last week's game against Denver after dislocating his shoulder, and while the team doctors had officially cleared him for play this week, Dennis Allen wanted to play things on the safe side with his young signal caller. McGloin sat on the bench for this week's trip to San Diego, and rookie Derek Carr recorded his first NFL start (and first NFL win) as the Raiders made a great late-game pull to down the Chargers for the second time this season.

Carr put his team up early in the game, finding TE David Ausberry open underneath for a red-zone touchdown pass, which was answered quickly by the Chargers on a touchdown run by Ryan Mathews, who had missed the teams' first meeting due to an injury. The Raiders would be ahead by halftime, though, as Denarius Moore took a jet sweep handoff for a goal-line touchdown run in the second, putting Oakland ahead 17-7 at halftime.

The Raiders found the endzone early on a pass to David Ausberry, one of the team's steady receiving threats.

The Chargers made a post-halftime resurgence, with Philip Rivers finding a better rhythm against the Oakland secondary and connecting on a 20-yard touchdown pass to David Johnson, combined with a field goal to bring the game back to a 17-17 tie at the end of the third quarter. The game even remained tied well into the fourth as each team put up another field goal to inch up to 20-20, but a pair of touchdowns came in surprising ways for the Raiders to seal the deal.

Derek Carr, who had already recorded one touchdown through the air, picked up one on the ground as well when he rolled out right off a play action fake and carried the ball into the endzone for a 27-20 lead. And Denarius Moore, who is increasingly emerging as a multi-purpose threat for the Raiders, added another trick to his arsenal by throwing a pass from a Wildcat formation to Maurice Jones-Drew, who then sprinted down the field for a 58-yard touchdown.

These two late-game scores put down the Chargers' attempt at a comeback, and San Diego's momentum stalled, going 0-2 for the year in AFC West play against Oakland and falling further down into the dregs of the divisional standings.

The game showed Oakland that while Matt McGloin is still the chosen man under center, Derek Carr has the skill set to get the job done as well, and could end up challenging McGloin for his starting spot next year in Portland. It also demonstrated the surprising ability of the Oakland secondary -- especially mid-season free agent acquisition Asante Samuel, who broke up several potential big plays, including a touchdown-saving swat that helped keep keep the Chargers out of the endzone. And finally, Denarius Moore is proving to be an all-around threat who can do anything for the Raiders -- he returns kickoffs and punts, plays wide receiver, and has recently shown the ability to run and throw and produce in all areas. With a four-year contract signed early this season, expect Moore to continue to be a feature part of the Oakland offensive attack.

Re: Oakland Exodus

2014: Week 12
Kansas City Chiefs @ Oakland Raiders

Raiders' Cost High in Defensive Battle

The Raiders lost the game and their starting Quarterback Thursday night.

Under the prime-time spotlight of Thursday Night Football, one of the best teams in the NFL came to Oakland to face the Raiders on their home turf, and the Chiefs were looking for an important win to stay in an increasingly tight race for the division with the Denver Broncos. The Chiefs needed the win to stay in contention for the AFC West crown, and the Raiders needed the win to keep their slim wildcard hopes alive and continue the hunt for their all-elusive winning season.

And from the first snap, it seemed like Oakland had found the rhythm to make that happen. James Jones, who has generally sacrificed the spotlight to his fellow receiver Denarius Moore, caught his Cornerback over-pursuing on a curl route, and broke sharply down the field for a 46-yard touchdown run, and Sebastian Janikowski followed up with a field goal to put the team up 10-0 early on.

WR James Jones taunts the Kansas City defense on the way to a 46-yard touchdown.

Kansas City seemed to be searching desperately for momentum, but they found it quickly. After Janikowski's field goal gave the Raiders a two-possession lead, HB Jamaal Charles took the kickoff that followed out of the end zone and broke several tackles, tearing down the sideline and answering with a 102-yard kickoff return that quickly deflated Oakland's high spirits.

The second quarter only saw a single field goal to tie the game at 10-10, but Oakland suffered a devastating blow when QB Matt McGloin left the game after re-injuring his shoulder while being sacked. McGloin has had a rough time with injuries this season, missing part of the season opener with an ankle injury, and sitting out a game and a half thanks to a dislocated shoulder suffered against the Broncos. Dennis Allen kept him off the field last week against San Diego to give him extra time to recover, but it proved fruitless as McGlioin suffered a torn shoulder labrum, which took him out for the remainder of Thursday's game.

With McGloin's season looking likely to be over and Jamaal Charles taking the wind out of their sails, the Raiders struggled to produce drives in the second half, and a fumble on a wide receiver screen set up a Jamaal Charles touchdown run to close out the game, leaving the Raiders to lick their wounds and eagerly await word on McGloin's condition.

A fumbled screen to James Jones set up the game-winning touchdown for the Chiefs.

Now, the Raiders will have to decide whether to place their season in the hands of rookie Derek Carr or veteran Matt Schaub as they attempt to make it through the rest of their season with a winning record. The playoff picture is grim and extremely unlikely for Oakland, and at this point an above-.500 record is the team's only realistic season-ending goal. Next week they face the NFL's worst team in the St. Louis Rams which should be an easy win, but they will need to do some significant regrouping in order to close out the season on a winning note.

Re: Oakland Exodus

2014: Week 13
Oakland Raiders @ St. Louis Rams

Resurgent Rams Go Two Straight

The NFL-worst Rams now have a two-game win streak after besting San Diego and Oakland.

The St. Louis Rams are, by stats and standings, the NFL's worst team. The Rams opened the season with 10 straight losses, making a nearly invincible case for next year's top draft pick as the team struggled to find results against anyone. Finally, in week 11, they managed to pull out a win against the self-destructing San Diego Chargers, and they struck gold twice in a row by beating an equally faltering Oakland squad on Sunday.

The game looked like a battle between bottom-dwelling NFL teams should. There were plenty of missed opportunities, both offenses failed to muster any noteworthy drives, and it was only the late-game collapse of the Raider defense that allowed Sam Bradford to secure the win after he returned from an injury that kept him out for the middle quarters of the game.

Denarius Moore provided one of the only bright spots for Oakland in the first half, taking a jet sweep handoff near the goal line to score a rushing touchdown -- a strategy the Raiders have been using with increasing frequency (and success) in the red zone.

Denarius Moore scored the Raiders' only touchdown in a difficult loss Sunday.

But from that point on, the offense had almost no traction against the Rams. The St. Louis defense shut down Maurice Jones-Drew so thoroughly that Dennis Allen benched MJD and leaned on Darren McFadden, whose better performance wasn't enough to jump-start the offensive attack. Derek Carr was reliable enough in the short passing game and took a few runs downfield, but when it came time to take the leash off and make big plays, the young QB couldn't get the ball deep downfield for put much-needed points on the board.

The Rams, for their part, were forced to play most of the game relying on back up QB Shaun Hill while Bradford sat out the second and third quarers with a minor injury, and the Raiders did a good job of keeping Hill off balance for most of the game.

Safety Charles Woodson intercepts Shaun Hill in the third quarter.

Hill only had one big drive, but it was all that mattered. His touchdown pass into the corner of the endzone to Tavon Austin gave the Rams the jolt they needed, and kept them in contention until Zac Stacy scored the winning touchdown in the fourth quarter, with Oakland failing to answer and going three-and-out in their attempt a two-minute offense.

A loss like this will make a lot of people in Oakland nervous -- especially Head Coach Dennis Allen, whose job security is uncertain as the Raiders fall lower and lower in the NFL rankings.

Tough loss to the Rams. The playoffs might be out of reach but, because you're already at 5-6, you should be able to improve the Raiders' record from last year.

I'll take a moral victory!

And now with McGloin out for the year, Carr has a chance to make a case for himself for next year -- he may just end up starting by the time I hit next season. Gonna get another game or two up tomorrow night, so hopefully I can turn the record around!

Raiders Break the Tie in Final Battle of the Bay

Derek Carr had a breakout performance as the Raiders rolled over the 49ers in the final Battle of the Bay matchup.

Every few years, the Raiders cross paths in the regular season with their neighbors across the Bay, the 49ers. The regular season series between the two teams was tied at 6-6 when they last met in 2010, and with the Raiders moving north to Portland, this weekend's game marked the final rubber match for the series. And the Raiders bounced back from a humiliating loss to the Rams last week to win the matchup in style.

Coming in at 4-8, the 49ers weren't having a great year to begin with, and they struggled hard against an Oakland defense that seemed to have the team's number on every drive. They swarmed to ball carriers and held Frank Gore to a meager 2.6 yards per carry, and kept Colin Kaepernick rushed and contained.

The Raider defense was on point against San Francisco, smothering the offense all night.

The Raiders, on the other hand, scored steady points every quarter as Darren McFadden overtook Maurice Jones-Drew to have a strong game running, and Derek Carr showed off his passing skills by throwing for two touchdowns, and then running the ball in for a third score at the end of the game. Not only did the performance redeem the Raiders for dropping a game to the bottom-dwelling Rams, but it ended a highly charged rivalry with a final win for the Oakland fan base.

Charles Runs All Over Raiders to Keep Chiefs in Divisional Hunt

As the Chiefs try to seize the AFC West, Jamaal Charles had a stellar day to help his team's cause.

When the Raiders and Chiefs met for the first time this year on Thursday Night Footall, Oakland started off strong and gave up just enough to lose a narrow game to their division rivals. This weekend, with the Chiefs still neck-and-neck with the Broncos for the division and the Raiders somehow hanging on to a remote statistical probability of a Wild Card spot, the teams met for a second time in a game that wasn't even competitive.

Derek Carr may have looked impressive last week, putting up three all-purpose touchdowns against the 49ers, but this week he looked nervous and overwhelmed by Kansas City's defense. Carr threw one interception and gave up three fumbles, helping to ensure that KC got ahead early. And for a struggling team that relies on an aggressive ground game to keep a deliberate pace, falling behind early spells disaster. As the pressure mounted for the Raiders to abandon their methodical rushing attack and shoot downfield for quick points, Carr gradually looked worse and worse.

Derek Carr had major issues securing the ball, giving Kansas City four turnovers.

Alex Smith played respectably, but it was all-star Running Back Jamaal Charles who dominated the game, rushing for 228 yards -- more than the entire Oakland offense. Charles had stout run blocking and broke tackles all over the field, presenting a relentless assault that the Raiders' front seven never found a way to reliably contain. Joe McKnight chipped in to carry the rock while Charles rested on the sidelines, but it was Charles who shouldered the lion's share of his team's victory.

The Raiders never found a way to slow down Jamaal Charles, who out-produced the whole Oakland offense.

The win proved crucial for the Chiefs in their race with the Broncos, who downed San Diego this week to stay just a game ahead in the division. The Raiders, who were already at the bottom of the barrel with a hypothetical wild card shot are now likely to be fully statistically eliminated from the playoffs, meaning the team is now playing for pride and a draft pick.
