2015: Preseason Week 3
Baltimore Ravens @ Portland Snowhawks

Snowhawks Christen New Stadium With a Win

Rose City Stadium is the NFL's newest sports complex, and hosted its first game Saturday night.

The Snowhawks had to wait half the preseason, but on Saturday night they finally got to play their first home game as an NFL franchise. Rose City Stadium, in the heart of Portland Oregon, was uncovered during its construction last year and served to start the first rumors of the Raiders' relocation to a new venue. The now-complete stadium hosted the Baltimore Ravens Saturday, and the Snowhawks were able to deliver some last-minute heroics to put this historic game in the "win" column.

At first, it looked like the Snowhawks were in familiar territory when Joe Flacco torched the secondary for a 54-yard scoring pass to Steve Smith -- an all-too-common sight for Portland' struggling defensive backs.

Joe Flacco exposed the weakness of Portland's defensive secondary, like several QBs this season.

Portland answered back with a field goal and a touchdown pass by preseason sensation Dion Britt, but the Ravens didn't trail for long and led 17-13 by halftime, holding Portland's offense in check for most of the game. Darnell Linder, the Snowhawks' second round draft pick who took a back seat in last week's game, stepped up to produce yardage, but the team frequently stalled and failed in the red zone when critical points were needed to seize the lead.

After Dion Britt opened the game under center, his competitor Derek Carr entered the game late, and blew down the field in a last-minute drive that -- for the third consecutive week -- saw the Snowhawks scoring a touchdown on a Quarterback scramble.

Derek Carr led the Snowhawks' game-winning drive, scoring with his legs in the final two minutes.

But while the previous two weeks saw the team come up short on failed two point conversions, this week the touchdown was enough to set the team ahead 20-17, and Ravens rookie Cooper Franklin couldn't duplicate Carr's clutch performance. By the narrow gap of three points, the Snowhawks scraped out a win and earned the right to call their first game in Rose City Stadium a victory.

Re: Oakland Exodus

2015: Preseason Week 4
New York Giants @ Portland Snowhawks

New-Look Giants Finish 3-1 With Win in Portland

Jeff Fisher's Giants are 3-1 in the preseason after undergoing some major personnel changes.

After the New York Giants finished 2-14 in 2014, tied for dead last in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills, the team underwent an offseason transformation. Head Coach Tom Coughlin retired from the game, and he was replaced by Jeff Fisher, fresh off being fired from his position in St. Louis. Fisher made some big splashes early on in New York, bringing FS Devin McCourty and HB Chris Johnson into the fold, and used the second overall pick of the 2015 draft to select TE LaMichael Belton, touted as one of the most talented players in the draft class. And after two weeks of preseason play, Fisher made more headlines by cutting career Giant Eli Manning, pitting Case Keenum and Ryan Nassib in a battle for the starting job.

And so far, it's working. The resurgent Giants finished their season at 3-1 after taking down the Snowhawks at home in Portland, while the NFL's newest franchise lost a game and some key talent.

Giants QB Ryan Nassib finished his preseason with a very strong showing against Portland's struggling DBs.

Portland's two potential starting QBs alternated play in the first half, and then Carl Deling dug deep down the depth chart to play his lowest-tier players, giving them one last shot at a roster position before making six cuts to reach the regular season 53-man roster. Connor Shaw was unimpressive in his three quarters of play, and most of the offensive production for the team came from rookie running backs Darnell Linder and Montell Toomer, with Linder accounting for the team's only touchdown on the night.

The loss itself was of little consequence, as Deling played the game as a last-ditch tryout for his players. But in Derek Carr's attempt to outdo rookie Dion Hill for the starting QB job, the second-year player from Fresno State was on the receiving end of some broken ribs, knocked out of the game in the second quarter by the Giants defense.

Derek Carr is expected to be out of action for the first several weeks of the season, and possibly more
after suffering broken ribs in the preseason finale.

In the end, Connor Shaw's lackluster performance likely cost the young Quarterback his roster slot, and Derek Carr's injury will thrust Dion Britt into the starting lineup for Week 1, ending the QB controversy by default. Carl Deling has some important personnel decisions coming up, but for the moment, he's found his starting signal-caller for the beginning portions of the Snowhawks' first NFL season.

Snowhawks 2015 Regular Season Preview

Snowhawks Take 51 Into Regular Season

The offseason and preseason saw a lot of changes coming to the NFL's newest franchise, and as the regular season is about to kick off, the Snowhawks have made some dramatic roster moves to prepare for the year and will enter the season with a 51-man roster after unloading some players on the trade market.

Just prior to announcing the final roster, the Snowhawks finalized a series of trades:

QB Matt McGloin and 4th Rnd Pick to Arizona Cardinals for 2nd Rnd Pick
Matt McGloin started the 2014 season as the Raiders' starter, and kept that job until the closing weeks of the season when a shoulder injury dropped him onto the IR and put Derek Carr under center. When Dennis Allen was fired and replaced with Carl Deling, McGloin's future seemed dim in Deling's high-mobility offensive scheme. The former Penn State QB didn't see a single preseason snap this year, but he'll be starting in Week 1 for the Cardinals after being traded, along with a fourth-round draft pick, for the Cardinals' second-round pick in the upcoming draft. The move unloads a Quarterback who was a poor fit for Deling's offense, and simultaneously gives the Snowhawks more options in the draft to continue to build their talent base.

DT Antonio Smith and 2nd Rnd Pick to Green Bay for LG Josh Sitton
Antonio Smith, like McGloin, was a casualty of Deling's coaching style. With the Snowhawks moving to a 3-4 defense, the team only needed one anchor at DT, and Pat Sims got the nod to fill the center of the defensive line. The Snowhawks had weaknesses on the offensive line, and two second-round picks after trading away McGloin. The Snowhawks gave up their own second-rounder along with Smith to get ahold of Packers LG Josh Sitton, one of the most talented men at his position in the NFL. For a team that plans to rely heavily on the run game, beefing up the offensive line is an important upgrade.

RT Donald Penn to Chiefs for 4th Rnd Pick
Rather than carry depth on the offensive line into the year, the Snowhawks chose to trade away one of their two solid Tackles to improve their draft position in the coming year. A fourth round pick may not seem like a lot, but it could lead the Snowhawks to a hidden sleeper, or become part of a larger trade package to move up to a higher pick.

Offensive Preview

Quarterback

The preseason was intended to be a three-way competition between Derek Carr, Connor Shaw, and rookie Dion Britt for the starting position, but Derek Carr's broken ribs thrust Britt into the position right away. The sixth-round pick performed well in the preseason and has the potential to be a highly successful sleeper, but he will need to balance his running talent with accuracy in the passing game.

Running Back

In a dramatic turnaround, not a single Running Back from 2014 is still on Portland's roster. While the Snowhawks thought they would have Darren McFadden on a long-term contract, Knowshon Moreno gives the team a substantial upgrade. Moreno is backed up by a pair of rookies -- second-round pick Darnell Linder from LSU and fourth-round pick Montell Toomer from Wisconsin. Carl Deling's offense calls for a variety of traditional and option-style runs, so having three strong players at this position is key to keeping the offense moving.

Wide Receiver

Like at Running Back, the Snowhawks Wide Receiver corps has undergone a major transformation since last season. Denarius Moore will return to his duties after a strong season in 2014, and free agent acquisitions Randall Cobb and Wes Welker will pad out the starting three. Veteran James Jones remains in limbo on the team, while undrafted rookies Santaurus Strong and Jamar Monroe have succeeded in burying fourth-round pick Lucas Allen after strong preseason showings.

Offensive Line

LT Nyjee Hayes was the Snowhawks' first pick of the 2015 draft, and he will be starting as former LT Austin Howard has been moved to RT to accommodate the rookie. Ryan Kalil was perhaps the team's biggest free agent signing, and a big trade for LG Josh Sitton means that the Snowhawks will be working with a talented offensive line that should be capable of protecting Dion Britt and creating the pushback needed to keep Carl Deling's rush-heavy offense moving forward.

Defensive Preview

Defensive Line

LaMarr Woodley, Pat Sims, and Justin Tuck are all back from last year, meaning that the defensive front is the most stable position for the Snowhawks right now. Age is an increasing concern as all three linemen are 30 or older, but these three can anchor Deling's 3-4 offense and provide strong play while the team drafts for the future.

Linebacker

Nick Roach and Kaluka Maiava might not be the strongest MLBs in a 3-4 scheme, but they are supported by two of the best young OLBs in the league. Sio Moore has shown explosive play and consistent improvement through the off-season, and Khalil Mack earned Defensive Rookie of the Year honors last year and has established himself as one of the league's premier OLBs. Expect a lot of plays from the second level of the front seven this year.

Defensive Backs

The defensive secondary is Portland's most glaring weakness, and it was exploited by all of the team's opponents in the preseason. The team added CB Brandon Carr as a late free agent pickup to try to address this, but the rest of the CB group is underwhelming. Tarell Brown is still a decent player at age 30, but the team's young backs have yet to show themselves capable of standout play, and opposing offenses should be able to exploit this lack of talent by attacking through the air. On the far back end, Charles Woodson remains a team staple at Free Safety, alongside Strong Safety Tyvon Branch who has shown himself a capable playmaker.

Re: Oakland Exodus

I'm surprised that Britt won the starting job, albeit due to injury. Michael Vick "should" (lol) be a good mentor. Sitton upgrades your o-line, which is good because of Britt's mobility. Britt, Moreno, Cobb, and Welker...that's a high-powered offense, potentially.

Re: Oakland Exodus

Britt did surprise me with how well he played... Carr is the better passer by far, but the mobility Britt brings is awesome, and I love the opportunities it opens up for offensive variety. The offense definitely got some nice upgrades, so I'm looking forward to putting up better points than last season.

Re: Oakland Exodus

2015: Week 1
Portland Snowhawks @ San Diego Chargers

New Weapons Help Push Snowhawks Past Chargers

Wes Welker helped keep several drives alive by making clutch catches on third down.

AFC West division play got an early start this year, as the Portland Snowhawks and San Diego Chargers met in Week 1 in a matchup of the division's lower half. With Denver and Kansas City usually fighting it out for the division, the Snowhawks and Chargers will likely be dueling for third and fourth place -- and a Wildcard berth -- in the division. San Diego didn't get off to a great start, however, as they gave up a last-minute win against Portland Sunday.

Knowshon Moreno made his presence felt, accumulating over a hundred yards on the day and showing that he intends to be a major playmaker in the Snowhawk offense. Moreno broke to the outside for a 37-yard run on the game's opening drive to take his team into the redzone, and then pounded in a touchdown a few plays later to give Portland the first lead.

The Snowhawks prefer a run-heavy offense, and Knowshon Moreno showed off his skills in a 100-yard game.

Philip Rivers answered the score with a 2-yard pass to Da'Rick Rogers, and the Charger defense took the lead midway through the second quarter when Davon House picked off Dion Britt in the redzone, running the ball back 91 yards for a pick six. One of the first tests of any rookie Quarterback is his ability to have a short memory -- and Britt had one, as the took the team right back down the field on their next possession and extended the play with his speed, finding another new face to the team, WR Randall Cobb, in the back of the endzone to tie the game at halftime.

The third quarter was scoreless, but the Snowhawks kept things moving in their direction in the fourth. After the Chargers took a small lead off a 50-yard field goal, rookie QB Dion Britt, who had already had an impressive day passing, showed off some of his agility by taking a designed, head-on Quarterback run play from the shotgun, diving over the offensive line and into the endzone to take a late 21-17 lead.

Dion Britt jumps the pile on a designed run for a fourth-quarter touchdown.

It seemed like the Chargers had a comeback brewing, as Philip Rivers connected with Keenan Allen on a 30-yard touchdown pass, and after a Snowhawk field goal, Rivers had his team moving downfield inside the final two minutes of the game. While the defensive secondary of the Snowhawks has struggled all year, newly-arrived CB Brandon Carr made a critical hit to jar the ball loose from Mike Williams' hands, forcing San Diego to punt with under a minute left.

With the game on the line, the Snowhawks opted to shoot for a field goal rather than run the clock out to overtime. But the team did one better, as Denarius Moore caught a pass across the middle from Britt and turned upfield, cutting through the Charger secondary for a 57-yard touchdown as time expired, sealing a thrilling last-minute 31-24 win.

Denarius Moore found a gap in San Diego's defense and took Dion Britt's pass 57 yards to win the game.

The Snowhawks' season-opening win helped to validate the team's big off-season signings. Knowshon Moreno was a strong leader in the running game, and with the help of an offensive line bolstered by Kalil and Sitton, the Snowhawks put up over 200 yards of rushing offense as a team. Dion Britt, meanwhile, showed that he's not just a running Quarterback by passing for over 300 yards, and making the most of the team's newest receivers. Randall Cobb found a way to get open for a touchdown while Britt extended the play, and Wes Welker was a much-needed security blanket for critical third-down conversions.

Defensively, the team performed as expected -- the secondary gave up some big plays and scores to Rivers, but the front seven were able to contain big run plays and put plenty of pressure on Rivers. It wasn't ideal, but it was enough -- as long as the offense can continue to put up points with an aggressive play style, some of the defense's cracks can be covered up.
