This game kind of made me a little PO'd to be honest. The Defense just could not get it going and thanks to the mistakes of Matt McGloin the game became way out of reach; but when we were starting to come back thanks to a bad decision by rookie Derek Carr is cost us the game.

The Offense, once again, was beginning to evolve into a run-first offense. Andre Ellington is now able to run freely behind his blockers, and while he does have those plays where he gets tackled 3 or 4 yards in the backfield - there are the big plays he has (at least once a game) runs that go at least 25 yards+. Matt McGloin played horrifically in the first half (9 of 21 for 123 yards, 1TD and 2 INTs), to the point where I benched him in favor of rookie Derek Carr. Carr had a solid game in relief (11/16 for 118 yards and 1 TD 1 INT), and was able to really find main targets James Jones (5/'63/2), Mychal Rivera (6/97) and Harry Douglas (3/30). However, when Carr took the field I realized that the running game was having the most success - (Ellington: 13 for 61, Carr: 5 for 33). With Carr now under center for the foreseeable future it opens up the Read Option side of the playbook which I am very excited for.

The Defense was hot and cold at times. Most of the scores for the Cardinals were after turnovers that gave the Cardinals amazing initial field position; and even one INT that was returned for a Touchdown all together. The Rushing Defense finally had an amazing game holding new-Cardinal Stevan Ridley to only 68 yards on 23 carries (2.9 YPC) but we lost it when trying to defend the pass. Midway into the 2nd Quarter Carson Palmer was lighting our defense up (12/15 for 125 yards) but went down with an injury. In replacement comes in Drew Stanton who continued the streaking against our tired and old Pass Defense and lit us up for (14/18 for 156, 1 TD). The major benefactors for the Cardinals today was definitely Ted Ginn who nabbed a game-high 7 receptions for 94 yards.

Draft Stories & Scouting
Team Needs: RG, RT, LE, RE, CB, FS, K
  • Head Scratcher: The on field inconsistencies of UCLA FS Trashaun Brooks may cost him come draft day
    • "Scouts are wondering if Trashaun Brooks has a twin brother. Only way to explain lack of consistency from week to week." - Matt Miller
Well, after looking at that story I really need to avoid Trashaun Brooks when looking for a replacement FS in the draft.

Players Added to My Draft Board
  • Sterlin McCoy (FS - Playmaker / Attacking 3-4 - Projected 2nd Round #12)
    • His PMVA's look pretty solid (Zone & Man Coverage: B, Play Recognition & Awareness: C) and has good Hit Power (B) too, should be a solid 2nd round pick if he falls to me.
Players Scouted
  • Chissom Miinor (RT - Pass Blocker - Projected 1st Rd #3)
  • Damion Hall (CB - Prototype - Projected 1st Rd #11)

  • Alan Myers (DT - Balanced - Projected 3rd Rd #15)

Coaches Corner

It is now Derek Carr's time to shine in the NFL. Matt McGloin was awful in his stead at starter; and now it is time for the future of the Raiders to take control. I cannot wait to start running some Read Options and fully utilize my 'Scattergun' playbook.

God what a ridiculous loss..

The Offense today actually was pretty stellar. Derek Carr (18/33 for 190 yards, 3 TDs and 1 INT) looked pretty comfortable in the pocket and was able to bust off some nice Read Options and open up the offense. I think this is going to be the start of us moving up the Offensive Team Ranks in the coming weeks, especially in the ground game. Andre Ellington looked solid once again rumbling for a solid 82 yards on only 14 carries with 3 catches out of the backfield for 40 yards including his nice 23 yard screen TD in the 2nd Quarter. The other receivers really didn't do a good job today at holding onto the ball, most receivers had at least one drop, and I am trying to get James Jones (1/15/0) and Harry Douglas (3/24/1) more involved in the passing game, but being covered by Joe Haden really doesn't help things.

The Defense was the real problem today, as we made Johnny Manziel look like friggin Peyton Manning as he tossed his way to an astounding 88% Pass Completion Percentage (22/25) for 259 yards and 4 scores - 1 INT. For whatever reason our entire secondary looked completely lost on our zone coverages, blowing most of them when Manziel hit his targets for their scores, and leaving the biggest target on the field Jordan Cameron wide open on way too many plays (6/96/0). Ben Tate really was getting shredded by our defense, but a few long 10-yard scampers late in the game blew up his rushing total, but he should have had much less yardage than what he ended up with.

Week 9

My Player Performance Rankings

  • A. Ellington: 388 Rushing Yards – 22nd in NFL
  • M. McGloin: 692 Passing Yards – 33rd in NFL
  • J. Tuck: 14 Sacks – 1st in NFL

  • Interceptions: Jarius Byrd (NO) - 7 Interceptions

Team Performance Rankings

  • Raiders Offensive Rank: 31st - 1,922 Yards Gained
    • Pass: 32nd – 1,379 Passing Yards Gained
    • Rush: 25th – 543 Rushing Yards Gained
  • Raiders Defensive Rank: 14th - 2,454 Yards Allowed
    • Pass: 2nd – 1,528 Passing Yards Allowed
    • Rush: 32nd(T) – 926 Rushing Yards Allowed

Injuries
  • Kaluka Maiava (MLB - 75 OVR) - Pectoral Tear - Out 21 Weeks, *PLACED ON IR*
Losing Kaluka was a major hit to our already struggling defense. He was a solid linebacker that always plugged up the holes against the run, and was constantly getting better as the season went on, I will definitely have to comb through the Free Agency pool and get someone to replace him.

Draft Stories & Scouting

Team Needs: RG, RT, LE, RE, CB, FS, K
  • Catch of the Year: One of the best catches of the year, TE Samuel Parham leaped high in the air and hauled in the pass with one hand in Alabama's win this week.
    • "Experts should finally be able to cross 'Hands' off Parham's list of weaknesses." - Ross Tucker
Might add him to my list, but I really enjoy having Mychal Rivera and Marcel Reece as my dual TE's.. I may add him though because I want to put Reece in the backfield more as my RB2 and away from the TE position.

  • Second Guessing: DB De'Vaghn Mcgee has been the key to Miami's success defending the pass. He's playing shutdown coverage recently.
    • "De'Vagn Mcgee recently has looked like the type of defensive back you can leave on an island and he can do just fine." - Todd McShay
This is what I was waiting for! Added!

Players Added to My Draft Board
  • DeVagn Mcgee (CB - Run Support / Base 4-3 - Projected 1st Round #32)
    • His PMVA's are solid (Speed, Acceleration, Agility, Z. Coverage: A, Jumping, M. Coverage, Press, Pursuit: B) and I really would like to invest some serious consideration into getting him. I may need to trade up come draft time!
Players Scouted
  • Chissom Miinor (RT - Pass Blocker - Projected 1st Rd #3)
  • Damion Hall (CB - Prototype - Projected 1st Rd #11)
  • Sterlin McCoy (FS - Playmaker - Projected 2nd Rd #12)
  • Alan Myers (DT - Balanced - Projected 3rd Rd #15)
  • Lamanski Bars (K - Power - Projected 7th Rd #22)
  • Sterlin McCoy (FS - Playmaker - Projected 2nd Round #12)
Coaches Corner

I have made some adjustments to my 'Scattergun' playbook. I took out some of the redundant Shotgun formations (the ones that really are carbon-copies of different Shotgun sets I have employed) and added in a few more run-base sets like 'Near', another 'Singleback' set, and another couple sets.

I'm actually shocked.. The Seattle Seahawks are 3-4 right now.. I am blown away by their record so I did some digging and Russell Wilson is having an awful season - throwing 15 INTs to 10 TDs in only 7 games.

Wow the Seahawks 3-4 record was definitely not shown in this game.. They absolutely were the team that won the Super Bowl last year and absolutely desecrated us.

The Offense today was absolutely horrible, but I didn't expect much going up against the best Defense in the NFL. Derek Carr flashed his rookie-ness and threw for 5 INTs with only 1 TD. It was a terrible game for sure, but we were down early and he needed to throw just to be able to get us back in the game. The other thing that happened was that Andre Ellington couldn't get anything going in the ground game and only rushed for 38 yards on 16 carries.

The Defense was also abysmal today; but only against the Rush. Marshawn Lynch earned his share of Skittles today, rushing for an unbelievable 171 yards on 19 carries with 2 scores, also, backup Christine Michael was able to bust off for 31 yards on just 3 carries with a score. However, the Pass D was able to hold off the aerial attack from Russell Wilson and only allowed 150 yards passing and intercepted him one time, while only allowing one score to Kevin Norwood.

Injuries

Free Agency
Needed another MLB after getting absolutely desecrated against the Seahawks run game last week. Once Marshawn Lynch busted through the line he was able to get to the first down marker without much resistance. I need to find a MLB that is a Run Stuffing Playmaker like Maiava.
  • James Harrison (LOLB - 82 OVR)
    • Signing Harrison to a one-year contract to me is a great idea as he is a Zone Blitzing linebacker, and while he is not an MLB he can easily fit into my 3-4 scheme as a temporary MLB.

NOW THAT IS WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT HELL YES!!!!

The Offense was absolutely astounding today, and the switch from pass first, to run first was the key. The heavy dousing of Andre Ellington (23/79/0), Maurice Jones-Drew (9/20/1), Derek Carr (7/56/1), and Marcel Reece (5/15/0) was essential in this win today; managing the clock and keeping Peyton Manning off the field was the reason we got the W. We got off to an early lead thanks to key Read-Options and very key 3rd down conversions by MJD and Reece. The Passing game was a little worse, but definitely a HUGE improvement from the last game against the Seahawks; Carr went 19 of 30 for 219 yards and 1 TD and 1 INT, and his biggest targets were Harry Douglas (4/40/0) and there were some key receptions by Ellington (4/25/0) as well.

Carr scrambles for the scorestyle="width:300px;height:300px"/>
Derek Carr
rushes for the score in the 1st.

The Defense was ridiculously amazing today. In the first half we blanked the best offense in the NFL - that was incredible. Peyton Manning ended up having a pretty solid day (20/28 for 284 yards and 2 TDs / 0 INTs) but in the first half he was pretty harmless. There was one broken play today where I called a pass protection, but accidentally tried to predict a Rush up the middle during the pre-play rather than the pass, and Wes Welker (4/93/1) was wide-open by about 25 yards and took the long bomb to the house. We did cause one turnover on the day on Special Teams when D.J. Hayden absolutely blasted Wes Welker on a kickoff and set up a quick score.

Hayden DESTROYS Welker on the Punt ReturnJames Harrison goes in for the sack
D.J. Hayden destroying Wes Welker on the kickoff (L) -- The signing of James Harrison paid off big time, especially on this clutch 4th Quarter sack (R)

I actually thought I was going to lose the game at the end there, late in the 4th Quarter I was running out the clock and ran a HB Blast with MJD who got absolutely destroyed by Von Miller and coughed up the ball. 2 Plays later, Manning hit Demaryius Thomas (3/90/1) for a ridiculous score in which he busted through 3 tackles and fell into the end zone. However, they did not attempt an onside kick and I was able to keep the drive going by getting two 3rd Down Conversions and then kicking the 'rubbing-salt-in-the-wound' Field Goal as time expired.. Game. Over. What a WIN!!!

Derek Carr
was the key in the win against the Broncos last week utilizing the Read-Option extremely well and getting some key first downs when the chips were down. The extreme shift to the Run-Heavy offense is key to controlling the clock and keeping offenses off the field as our Defense clearly cannot hold anyone back.

Such a tough loss against our division rival; and while we did many things right turnovers were the thing to bring us to our demise on this one.

The Offense was pretty great today considering the defense we were facing. Derek Carr really did a solid job at everything today (17 of 28 for 190 yards 1 TD and 2 INTs and added 31 yards on the ground on 5 carries) but his turnovers were very costly, mainly the pick-six that was the difference maker in this one. Harry Douglas had a great day today running after making the catch; stretching 2 short passes for 30+ yards each, (4/74/0). The Rushing Entourage had another great game, and really did an amazing job once again at controlling the clock. Both Ellington (95 yards on 24 carries, 1 TD with 3 catches for 18 yards) and Jones-Drew (10 carries for 67 yards, 1 TD) both had scores and did an amazing job today stretching the field, especially MJD on his big run.

The Defense today was actually quite amazing against Philip Rivers holding him to just 133 yards passing (although I will admit they weren't on the field all too much today thanks to that pick-six). However, the main problem with us today was that we could not stop the run at all; Danny Woodhead busted off for 92 yards on just 16 carries with a TD and Ryan Mathews had 25 yards on his 2 carries including a score.

One thing I must control better is throwing the ball into coverage and not forcing it, especially against tough corners like Brandon Flowers.

This is the defining win of this season for us. We clearly established we can be one of the best rushing teams in the NFL; up there with the Chiefs and Eagles and Vikings.

The Offense today was absolutely destructive. Derek Carr played like an All-Star today throwing 24 of 31 for 217 yards and 3 TDs with 0 INTs (he did have a fumble that was returned for a TD, but we can work on that...) and added 20 yards on the ground with a scrambling TD. Andre Ellington absolutely exploded today, starting off the game with a nice 74 yard rush and added another 42 yard rush later in the game - finishing with 169 yards on the ground on just 20 carries with 2 scores. Carr actually got the ball to the top receivers today and made it look like they are worth a damn, James Jones nabbed 8 balls for 91 yards and a score at the last second and Harry Douglas grabbed 7 for 62. Both receivers were amazing in getting open in their Drag routes and Mychal Rivera absolutely dominated in the red zone with 2 scores.

Andre Ellington goes over the top for the score (L) Derek Carr celebrates after scrambling in the end zone (R)

The Defense began the game horrifically but ended up banding together and absolutely shut down the Chiefs offense. Thankfully, we had the benefit of not facing Jamaal Charles today thanks to injury, but his backup Joe McKnight (10/60/1) did a pretty solid job at filling in for the superstar. Alex Smith had an amazing game throwing the ball (22 of 28 for 288 yards and 2 TDs). The Passing Yardage is high, but they had to throw the ball a LOT after we took the lead in the 3rd. There were two big passes the Defense gave up today. Travis Kelce on the very first play caught a ball and beat Tarell Brown on his flat coverage and broke a tackle, en route to a 63 yard gain. The other was the Dwayne Bowe score, and once again was thanks to the lack of speed and recovery of Brown who was beat on a zone coverage and once the ball was in the air, there was nobody close to Bowe who took it to the house.

Tarell Brown is not cutting it at CB. I am very sure at my decision to put Damion Hall at the top of my draft board; he has all the makings of a future star corner, and has a Star Development rating to boot, I will make every effort to make him a Raider.

This was a tough loss today. Can't say much else other than our defense got absolutely shredded.

The Offense was stagnant today to say the least, Derek Carr got injured on the first series and did not return, I hope his injury isn't too serious and he can return to the team next week. Matt McGloin came in and did a phenomenally terrible job Quarterbacking (14/26 123 yards 0 TDs to 2 INTs), and it reminded me how much I need Carr to be successful, and if not I need to start looking toward the Draft for a QB replacement. Andre Ellington (19 carries, 43 yards, 1 TD) could not get anything going on the ground going against St. Louis' stout rush defense.

The Defense today was such a huge let down. Zac Stacy did a beastly job carving up our defense to the tune of 152 yards on just 21 carries, and even his backup Tre Mason beat us up for 61 yards on only 10 carries. The other problem we had today was once again not being able to defend the deep pass in zone thanks to Terell Brown. On a 2nd and long I called a deep zone for Brown to cover WR Tavon Austin and after the play action, Austin was about 25 yards behind Brown and took the reception to the house. Sam Bradford did a phenomenal job as well throwing for 303 yards and 2 TDs with only 1 pick. The only bright spots today were D.J. Hayden taking the fumble back 80 yards to get the Raiders back in the game under 2 minutes to play; and Justin Tuck, who is having one of the best seasons by a defensive end EVER, added 3 sacks to his league-leading total. He is just 2 sacks away from owning the NFL Record!!

This was an amazing game from start to finish but the real cause of this loss was how each team dealt with their turnovers; the Raiders couldn't capitalize while the 49'ers capitalized and in the perfect time.

The Offense was actually quite great today against the amazing SF Defense. Derek Carr especially, while he didn't have big yardage, carved up their secondary for 193 yards and 3 TDs. His receivers didn't have many catches either but the catches his big 3 made were great for big play 3rd Down Conversions. James Jones put up (4/36/1), and Harry Douglas and Mychal Rivera posted the same stat line of (3/64/1). Andre Ellington finally slowed down after having quite the big 3 weeks (15/62/0) but that statline is all the more impressive when you realize that it was against the stout SF Front-Seven.

The Defense seemed to flip flop from how the season stats look; as our Pass Defense looked awful (#1 against the Pass so far) and our Rush D finally looked stout (#32 against the Rush). The Front Seven did a dominant job at stuffing the run, against the SF Running Backs-- Frank Gore (10/30/0 and a fumble - left game with injury on play), Carlos Hyde (13/31/0 and 5 catches for 39 and 1 score) and Marcus Lattimore (5/30/0) -- but Colin Kaepernick really did a number on us both in the air (26 of 30 for 323 yards 1 TD, 2 INTs and adding 50 yards and a score on the ground). The Pass Defense did do a good job at not letting up any huge passes, and even the lowly Carlos Rogers did a solid job at defending the pass today!

However, when it came to crunch time the 49'ers really stepped it up. We had the lead with less than a minute left and Nick Roach intercepted a Kaepernick pass in the end zone which shouldhave sealed the game but after a terrible 3-and-Out Kaep drove down the field with ease and waltzed in the end zone to take the lead; next drive for us Derek Carr threw his only INT of the game which was returned for a score - game over.
