Giants focus on ground game, trample Cowboys

“It was definitely a conscious effort.” Coach Tom Coughlin answered when asked about the fact that the Giants actually ran the ball nine times more than they passed it. “We knew we couldn’t have him (Eli Manning) dropping back 50 or 60 times a game, it hasn’t worked.”

Rashad Jennings saw the bulk of the work, carrying the ball 31 times for 177 yards and a score. Henry Hynoski and Peyton Hillis also contributed with 5 carries for 26 yards and 3 carries for 18 yards respectively.

Even with some of the focus off him Manning still managed to throw for 189 yards and a pair of scores, leading to a 100.5 passer rating.

Manning’s favorite target was once again Victor Cruz, who caught 6 balls for 98 yards and a score. Rueben Randle caught the other touchdown pass and picked up 23 yards on three receptions. Jennings caught 5 balls for 27 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball Jason Pierre-Paul harassed Tony Romo all game long and came away with a pair of sacks, pushing his season total to 8.

Tony Romo threw for 211 yards along with one touchdown and an interception by Prince Amukamara.

DeMarco Murray had nowhere to run and totaled just 35 yards on 12 rushing attempts.

Dez Bryant led Dallas with 99 yards on 6 receptions.

The Giants now sit at 5-6 with a chance to get back to .500 with a win in Jacksonville. The Jaguars are currently 4-7.

Giants, Jags score 76 in shootout

If you bailed on the Jaguars and Giants game because it was boring you made a mistake. With New York on top at halftime by a score of 17-13 things were dull in the third as neither tea, added anything to the scoreboard. However, the real fireworks came in the fourth quarter as the teams combined for 46 points in the final frame.

The Giants had put up their 17 to that point via a 1 yard Hillis run in the first, a 22 yard Josh Brown field goal and a 10 yard Manning to Cruz passing score in the second. Jacksonville scored their 13 all in the second with a 2 yard Gerhart run and a pair of Scobee field goals, from 22 and 34 yards.

Things got rolling in the fourth quarter when Manning connected with Cruz for a short TD pass making it 24-13 Giants. Jacksonville would not go quietly. Scobee made it 24-16 with a 45 yard kick and the Jags tied it up at 24-24 with a 12 yard Gerhart run and 2 point conversion. The Giants went back on top by way of a 9 yard Manning to pass to Odell Beckham Jr. Just a few minutes later DRC all but put the game away with a 47 yard interception return touchdown, which made the score 38-24. Each team would score once more, Jacksonville on a Bortles to Robinson 15 yard pass and New York on another Manning to Cruz connection, this time from 27 yards out. When the final gun sounded it was the Giants on top 45-31.

Manning had one of his best games of the season, passing for 231 yards and four scores while throwing one interception. Jennings ran for 130 yards on 27 carries while Hillis added 20 yards and a score on 5 carries.

Cruz led the Giants with 8 receptions for 89 yards and three scores. Beckham Jr. caught 4 balls for 49 yards and a touchdown.

Antrel Rolle and Jon Beason each had 9 tackles. Beason, Williams and Moore each recorded a sack and Amukamara and Rodgers-Cromartie each picked off a pass.

For Jacksonville rookie quarterback Blake Bortles threw for 382 yards and a touchdown along with the two interceptions.

Gerhart carried 18 times for 80 yards.

Justin Blackmon caught 9 passes for a game high 104 yards and Cecil Shorts III added 80 yards on 7 receptions.

Jacksonville was led by Posluszny and Cyprien on defense as each of them tallied 12 tackles. Eli Manning was not sacked. Winston Guy got Jacksonville’s lone takeaway on an interception.

With four games left to play the Giants are now 6-6. They play at Tennessee next week. The Titans are currently 4-8.
