Re: Out of Mediocrity: Rise of the Jets

Jets Lose Ivory; Who is Out There?

With starting halfback Chris Ivory out for the year with a torn hamstring, New York's backfield is in even more turmoil. Through four games, the Jet's have only rushed for a total of 434 yards, which is 10th in the league. However, Ivory and backup Chris Johnson have fumbled a total of five times. Not good when you are going to need to rush the ball when it hits December. The Jets can just name Johnson the starter and sign someone to fill a spot. To make things interesting, we will name some possibilities for the Jets to be the new starter.

Ray Rice
 photo rayrice_zpsd1e26f4c.jpg

The former Raven's halfback was suspended indefinitely at the start of the regular season for assaulting his then-fiance in a casino elevator. His suspension is now over after Rice appealed the decision last week and is currently sitting in free agency. The Jets could bring him in and put him in the starting role almost immediately. Though there might be some public backlash if the Jets decide to sign him, owner Woody Johnson has had no problems bringing players in with off the field issues in the past (see Plaxico Burress). At 27 years of age, he still has a couple of good years left in the tank although his numbers did declined last year.

Benjarvus Green-Ellis
 photo benjarvusgreen_zps36ed7b2a.jpg

The former Patriots and Bengals halfback is also in free agency after he was unseated by Giovanni Bernard in the preseason. He is older than Ray Rice and doesn't put up as good of numbers, but he doesn't bring any baggage with him. Don't expect him to have monster games, but he can keep the chains moving if used in rotation.

Trade Possibilities
 photo cjspiller_zps1f4699f1.jpg photo Bell_zps486b508f.jpg

If the Jets do not want to kick the tires on Rice and Green-Ellis, there are teams out there that would look at a trade. Among the front runners are the Buffalo Bills with C.J. Spiller and the Pittsburgh Steelers with Legarrette Blount. Spiller currently is the backup to Fred Jackson but with the Bills trading for Bryce Brown in the off-season, Spiller could be expendable for the right price. Spiller currently has 147 yards on 25 carries which is a 5.8 average. He also has one touchdown.

Blount signed with the Steelers after leaving New England this past off-season to rotate with Le'Veon Bell. Bell has come on and can pretty much move the ball on his own now. Blount doesn't have the stats that Spiller has (77 yards on 33 carries), but he has shown that he is tough and dependable.

What do you think the Jets should do? Sound off in the comments section below.

Re: Out of Mediocrity: Rise of the Jets

I say go for Green-Ellis. He has proven he can be a starter in the NFL, plus he has no off-field baggage.

Jets Sign Halfback Green-Ellis; Place Ivory on IR

--Coach Rex Ryan announced today that the Jets have placed halfback Chris Ivory on injured reserve with a torn hamstring. That move will end his season. Ivory was injured last week in a game against the Lions.

With a roster spot freed up, Ryan also announced that the team had come to terms with free agent halfback Benjarvus Green-Ellis. Green-Ellis was the starting back last year for the Cincinnati Bengals. He was released in the preseason after Giovanni Bernard took over the starting spot. Ryan wouldn't talk contract specifics, but sources say that it is a one year deal for $620K.

Don't expect Green-Ellis to make an immediate impact this week against the Chargers. "He will be the third string running back this week as he gets adjusted to the playbook," Ryan said.

Johnson, Jets Slice Up Chargers

 photo Pic3_zps228688d1.png
Chris Johnson leaves the Chargers behind.

--The Jets proved today that they can hang with any team as long as their three main pieces on offense do not play. The defense held San Diego to just one touchdown, while now starting halfback Chris Johnson gashed the Chargers for 182 yards and two touchdowns in a 27-19 victory.

Johnson, starting in place for the injured Chris Ivory, had a breakout day that reminded you that he once won the rushing title. Johnson had touchdown runs of 79 and 46 yards and gave the Jets what they had been searching for all season, which was a consistent running game. Quarterback Geno Smith didn't turn the ball over throwing for 171 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown pass came in mass confusion, with receivers T.J. Graham and Greg Salas ending up in the same place in the endzone. Graham didn't look back, which resulted in the ball hitting the back of his helmet and falling into Salas' hands.

The defense completely shut down the San Diego offense allowing just one touchdown pass. Philip Rivers had a nice game throwing for 263 yards and a score, but was constantly shut down in the redzone. Halfback Danny Woodhead rushed for 118 yards on 30 carries. Without Keenan Allen in the lineup, the Jet's decided to double cover tight end Antonio Gates the entire game. Gates was still able to produce catching seven passes for 86 yards. New York's defensive ends Muhammad Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson continued to rack up, tallying 3.5 sacks together.

After taking a 9-6 lead into halftime, the Chargers couldn't hardly muster anything. After Salas caught his touchdown pass, Rivers responded by hitting receiver Eddie Royal for a 7 yard score to take back the lead. It all ended there when Chris Johnson went off for his two long scoring runs. The Chargers did have a chance to win it at the end after Nick Folk's 54 yard field goal attempt hit the crossbar and bounced out. Rivers guided the offense to the Jet's 40 before fizzling out on fourth down.

The Jets lost two players in the game. Starting linebacker Calvin Pace left the game in the second quarter and didn't return. Wide receiver Jeremy Kerley, playing in his first game in almost a month, left the game after his first catch with an injury and didn't return. Next week, tough competition comes to New York when Peyton Manning and the defending AFC Champion Denver Broncos come to MetLife.
