2008 Ivy League Recap

Here is a recap of the 2008 Ivy League season along with the players named 1st Team All-IVY. Turns out that the beating Princeton put on us was no fluke. The Tigers went 6-1 in the Ivy to take home the 2008 League Crown. Our season closing win over Yale moved us out of a 3-4 log jam and into sole possession of 3rd place behind Brown. We had the Bears beat before giving the game away late...oh well, wouldn't have made much difference. Nice to see Pilconis make the 1st Team Offensive squad. Gordon had more yardage than anybody else in the league, but must not have scored enough TDs to make the 1st Team...that and the fact that he is only a frosh. Defensively Bagdis and Sweeney anchor the two DE spots while Monu and Zych both nabbed spots in the secondary. Schindel and Lagace both received mention on special teams. Hope everybody likes the report and thanks again for following Rock and the Crimson!

Here is a look at the 2008 BCS & Conference Champions. Indiana came out of nowhere to win the B1G. Good for the Hoosiers. In all my years of playing this game I don't think that I have EVER seen them do ANYTHING. Also the first time that I have seen Ole Miss win the SEC...which is a shocker considering that Tebow is still at Florida. Ohio State wins the 2008 National Championship even though they didn't win their own conference. The Buckeyes defeated Oklahoma in the Title Game. Champions from all of the non-BCS conferences (Tulsa, Princeton, N. Illinois, BYU, and Boise) were all given the opportunity to move up following the end of the season. The Pac10 was the only conference willing to make a move, and offered an invitation to BYU. The Cougars will replace Stanford next season (2009).

I mentioned earlier that Indiana won the Big Ten Conference in 2008. This is the first time that I can EVER remember the Hoosiers winning ANYTHING, and for that to happen you just know that something special must have been going on Bloomington. Well, that something special was Kellen Lewis. In another ground breaking dynasty moment for me, Lewis was rewarded for his efforts with the 2008 Heisman Trophy. Congratulations to Kellen on this remarkable accomplishment!!

Crimson football players JB Monu and Gino Gordon recently received Post Season Honors following the 2008 season.
Monu, a sophomore defensive back, was selected as a 1st Team All-American. The Pittsford, NY native intercepted 9 passes and deflected 10 others in 2008. He finished the season with 53 tackles (3rd) and returned an interception for a touchdown in the Crimson's season opening win over Penn.

2008 Passing Stats

Chris Pizzotti led us in passing during the 2008 season...but I'm not really sure that is anything to brag about. The completion percentage is lower than I thought that it would have been headed into the season, but I think we dropped something like 40 balls. Complete those and he is looking at 2500+ yards and a percentge around 68. Numbers like that might have made a difference in a couple of games. Probably didn't help a whole lot that he was throwing off of his back foot most of the time...35 sacks is a TON!! Seems like our offense operated the best when Pizzotti was attempting right around 16-20 passes a game. Many more than that and we were either playing catch-up or he was throwing picks. Witt and Simpson were both distant options at #2 and #3. Witt is older and probably has the inside track for next season, but we will definitely be looking for some help in recruiting as well. Long's pass attempt was on a fake punt. Baakel put it up twice on halfback passes.

2008 Rushing Stats

Gordon made the Frosh All-American Team...and in my opinion had the stats to back it up. Led the Ivy League in rushing yards. Pretty excited to have him back for another couple of seasons. Baakel was a capable backup and he graduates. Nearly all of Doerner's yards came on one carry and Van Niel was hurt most of the year after the first play of the season. Running the ball will be an offensive focus for us in 2009.

2008 Receiving Stats

Here is a look at the receiving stats for 2008. Mazza and Lagace both graduate. Luft and Cook will be called on to fill their spots in 2009. Miller and Scwartz are both back at the TE spot. The thing that really jumps out at me is the alarming number of drops...44 to be exact. If you figure that we caught 150 and dropped 44 that means a total number of catchable balls was 194. Dropping 44 of 194 is roughly 23%. That number seems WAY too high. Not sure if it is a talent issue or a slider issue. I will continue to monitor it in 2009, but either way we need to catch more balls and drop less of them.

2008 Blocking Stats

Blocking stats aren't very sexy or fun to talk about, but here they are just the same. According to the stats, our players allowed 26 sacks. Our QBs were sacked a total of 37 times...so I guess that means that the other 11 are coverage sacks or just a matter of the QB not throwing the ball. Only notable below is that Pilconis graduates.
