Game Notes
IU and Kentucky renew their rivalry this week, as the Hoosiers make the trip down to Lexington. It's hard to judge this Kentucky team, with wins against Auburn and Florida, and their only losses coming to good LSU and South Carolina teams. We'll see if they can keep pace with the #4 Hoosiers.
Keys to victory
Indiana- Defense. Kentucky has some pretty poor offensive statistics, and if Indiana can hold them to that, the Wildcats may have a hard time putting up points, which would make it pretty difficult to win.
Kentucky- Passing. Kentucky's pass game is their strength, though that isn't saying much. But if they can find success through the air against an IU team that's struggled in pass defense, they may have a fighting chance.
Prediction: Indiana 33, Kentucky 17. Both of these teams should be used to tough competition by now, and a win for Kentucky may show they belong among the heavy hitters of the SEC. IU should win, but statistics are an afterthought when bragging rights are on the line.
6:00 PM, SEC Network

This day in Hoosier history
October 9, 1943- Indiana defeated Nebraska in blowout fashion, 54-14, in Lincoln. The Hoosiers, under coach Bo McMillin, would go 4-4-2 that season.

Kroger Field- Lexington, KY- Partly cloudy, 62 degrees- Oct. 9, 2021

Stress test

Lexington, KY- Indiana entered Saturday's game with Kentucky as the #4 team in the nation. But for the first half of play, it seemed like the roles had been reversed.

Kentucky got the ball first, and after converting on a pair of fourth downs, found their way into the endzone with a pass from senior QB Junior Roth. Indiana was held in check on the ensuing drive, and turned the ball over on downs when the fake punt attempt failed to move the chains. Kentucky took the short field and added 3 more to the scoreboard, and after a quarter, Kentucky led, 10-0.

Indiana finally got on the board midway through the second with a Bryant Swan field goal. The turning point for the Hoosiers came on the Wildcats' next possession, which looked to be heading for points before Roth's pass was intercepted by Jerrell Silva, who took it 77 yards to the house to even the score at 10. Kentucky did answer back, kicking another field goal with less than a minute to go in the half. IU's Joe Long threw an interception on the ensuing possession, and it appeared UK would score again before halftime, before Tyler Thomas made a touchdown-saving interception in the endzone. Kentucky still led at the half, however, 13-10.

The Hoosiers scored their first offensive touchdown of the contest on the opening drive of the second half, a short run from John Johnson which also gave Indiana its first lead of the game. IU would score again later in the quarter on a Joe Long pass to Bret Rodriguez, and Indiana took a 24-13 lead into the final quarter.

Indiana would find the endzone once more in the fourth with another short run, this time by Danny Novak. Kentucky fought it out to the end, scoring their first touchdown since the first quarter with less than a minute to go, but the damage had been done, and Indiana survives, 31-19.

"Clearly we didn't play well in the first half," said coach Pate after the game. "We were flat and they were outplaying us on both sides of the ball. Fortunately, we were able to get things turned around in the second half and we played like we're capable of, but this was far from our best showing tonight."

When asked what he told the team to turn things around at halftime, coach Pate only said, "Let's just say I wouldn't want to be in that locker room if I were them."

Indiana's Joe Long passed for 172 yards on 16 of 28 passing with a touchdown and an interception, as well as 36 yards rushing. Danny Novak, after being completely locked down for most of the first half, rebounded in the second and finished with 98 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Kentucky was carried by quarterback Junior Roth, who was 30 of 48 through the air for an even 300 yards and a touchdown. He was also picked off three times.

Indiana now heads home to continue their rivalry tour as they host Purdue next week in the Battle for the Old Oaken Bucket. Showtime in Bloomington is scheduled for 8 PM.
